Less than two weeks before we vote for a new president, a white woman says a black man attacked her, then scarred her face, and says there was a political motive for it. Ashley Todd, a 20-year-old white volunteer for John McCain's presidential campaign, says she was mugged at an ATM machine in Pittsburgh (my hometown) by a big black man. She further says he threw her down, then disfigured her by carving the letter "B" into her face with a sharp implement when he saw that she supported McCain, not Barack Obama. Part of the appeal of, and the unspoken tension behind, Senator Obama's campaign is his transformational status as the first African-American to win a major party's presidential nomination. That does not mean that he has erased the mutual distrust between black and white Americans, and this incident could become a watershed event in the 11 days before the election. If Ms Todd's allegations are proven accurate, some voters may revisit their support for Senator Obama, not because they are racists (with due respect to Rep. John Murtha), but because they suddenly feel they do not know enough about the Democratic nominee. If the incident turns out to be a hoax, Senator McCain's quest for the presidency is over, forever linked to race-baiting. For Pittsburgh, a city that has done so much to shape American history over the centuries, another moment of truth is at hand.
October 24th, 2008 at 7:11 pm I have news for you (and anyone who agrees with you). Most of even the conservative blogs found her story to be suspect from the beginning. This woman's problem and cry for attention has no bearing on either candidate regardless of how much the media would like it to have. Try to find a real story to report on such as Obama's donation page and the fact that he has address verification turned off in order to receive illegal overseas contributions as well as stolen credit card contributions.
October 24th, 2008 at 7:10 pm If you are a journalist and get a job for Fox News you must be depressed that your first job is with an organization that tells you what to write about and when to write it. A side note, this was a crazy story straight from the top and tells you a lot about the direction that the heads of FOX try to move their news.
October 24th, 2008 at 7:09 pm This story should never have gotten anywhere near the top of your website. My God, ESPN has been more careful on reporting the Isiah Thomas possible overdose today then you are with this story. And that's about sports, which compared to politics in the grand scheme of things, don't really matter! Stories which impact the presidential race at such a late date need to be researched better before throwing them all over your website. People at CBS News were fired over such conduct in 2004. I guess since you're the VP of the network you don't have to worry about that, but I think you made a bad ethical decision here. If I wanted salacious trash (and sometimes I do) I'd go to Drudge.
October 24th, 2008 at 7:05 pm If this girl is truly that mentally ill, perhaps Sarah Palin could fly her into Alaska where that witch hunter pastor of hers can exorcise the witchcraft spell she is under.
Because black Americans are untamed beasts who are incapable of restraint against white, Godly, conservative women? Speak for yourself buddy, for the rest of us here in the real world race is not why we might mistrust someone. Being a lying hack for the most biased news' outlet in the country-now that's a reason, not a person's skin color.
October 24th, 2008 at 7:00 pm Well, there wasn't much doubt anyway, but thanks for confirming that the horse is, indeed, deceased. I hope people will remember McCain for what he did earlier in his career.
October 24th, 2008 at 7:00 pm Is John McCain still calling to express his concern to deranged felons? He just couldn't wait to see if her story was true before trying to personally benefit.
October 24th, 2008 at 6:59 pm So, now "guilty by association" is the new standard by which we judge our candidates? If so, then 0bama could never be elected, along with thousands of other candidates. BTW, I have counted 50 incidents in which an 0bama supporter made false claims, as well.
October 24th, 2008 at 6:54 pm The woman in the story pretty obviously has a mental illness. In her twisted state of mind did she calculate the amount of publicity this would generate in the last days of an election with a hypersensitive media?
Is this your attempt to get the special VIP pass to Obama's party on November 4th-rather than having to pay the big bucks like the rest of the media? if he gets his way and puts the Fairness Doctrine in play-guess which TV Network is first on the cutting block? This "hoax" was the sick cry for help from a young RON PAUL supporter. Your attempt to link it to the McCain camp is weak at best.
October 24th, 2008 at 6:50 pm "If the incident turns out to be a hoax, Senator McCain's quest for the presidency is over, forever linked to race-baiting." And just how in the world is McCain's campaign linked to this? I agree that McCain should come out and denounce this kind of nonsense, but to say that McCain's campaign is over because of one silly twit is ludicrous.
October 24th, 2008 at 6:47 pm What the he-l-l are you talking about? How dare you use race-baiting yourself to attack John McCain. I'm not the only one that feels that way, and as of now, I will no longer watch Fox News.
October 24th, 2008 at 6:46 pm Like an Idiot, RjC Sez: "So what's your point? That because Democrats have the power they will somehow void America? Unless you happen to be a liberal Democrat when a Republican is in charge, then anyone like me who doesn't agree with the President is suddenly a "Commie who should move back to Russia." I look forward to using that argument against the likes of you, starting in January.
I highly doubt that the McCain campaign had anything to do with this. That's possible, especially with the election cycle going as it is for Senator McCain. Somebody who thought they could harm the Obama campaign and continue to flame the racial tensions that people have been noticing throughout this election cycle. Ultimately, it's just purely disgusting whether or not the McCain campaign had a hand in all of this. She obviously went into this hoping to sway voters from Senator Obama, as highlighted by Fox News' John Moody.
They're trying to take attention away from Palin testifying in Troopergate part 2, today. The entire Republican organization needs to be investigated by the FBI.
October 24th, 2008 at 6:38 pm Unless the McCain campaign put her up to it they're not really to blame, just as if it had been a genuine attack Obama's campaign wouldn't have been to blame - they've not incited anyone to attack McCain campaigners. So John Moody's ideas above don't make much sense to me.
October 24th, 2008 at 6:36 pm I'm an Obama supporter, but I don't think one can link McCain to this in any way. Now that this has been shown to be a hoax, McCain need only admit it and admonish his supporters to avoid such fabrications. The only Pennsylvanians who need to worry about being mugged by "big black men" are the Phillies, who need to worry about being mugged by the black men on the Rays, such as Carl Crawford and MVP-to-be BJ Upton.
October 24th, 2008 at 6:35 pm 1 Now that it is known to be a hoax aren't you embarrassed? probably not, no conscience at Fox 2 If there is some nut who does something in the name of the candidate, how -if the candidate does not tacitly support the nutiness (as Palin and McCain tacitly support the violent words at their rally)- is that relevant to my assessment of the candidate?
October 24th, 2008 at 6:34 pm Not only did she lie, but the McCain campaign pushed the story. Not saying it was their idea, but they sure did jump at it. What a bunch of disgusting pathetic excuses for human beings. From the top down, republicans represent all that is wretched in people.
October 24th, 2008 at 6:32 pm So it looks as though McCain will be forever tied to racebaiting. It is nothing less than he deserves for running such a dishonorable campaign. You should be ashamed of yourself in any ...
