publicly claimed that 28 people voted fraudulently in the Democratic primary, held in June, for a local race. Then this morning, the RNC sent out a press release announcing a 3pm conference call with reporters "on the recent developments in New Mexico regarding ACORN." But at 11am, ACORN -- the community organizing group that Republicans have been trying lately to turn into a voter fraud boogeyman -- held a conference call of its own, asserting that local election officials had confirmed that the 28 people in question, mostly low-income Latinos, were valid voters. So here at TPMmuckraker, we wondered what the RNC's response to this would be. And on the 3pm call, we asked party spokesman Danny Diaz.
story, which did not address the allegation made last week by the state GOP about fraudulent voting in the Democratic primary. In other words, it looks like the RNC had scheduled a call to tout evidence of voter fraud -- not voter registration fraud, mind you, but actual voter fraud -- being perpetrated by ACORN in New Mexico. But when ACORN appeared to come up with compelling evidence that no such fraud had occurred, the RNC held the call anyway, simply shifting the focus to other vague allegations against ACORN -- then refused to address the New Mexico situation when asked.
I'm glad to see their stupid plots blowing up in their faces, both MI and NM. There are so many more embarrassments to come for the R's and they don't even care.
user-pic I get the feeling they don't even know when they're lying anymore. It's like a comically incompetent version of 1984 meets Babbit. Babbit becomes a political consultant, accidentally locks himself in Conference Room 101 with Karl Rove, proceeds to run political campaign on premise of 2+2=5.
user-pic Talk radio is necessary to get this message about ACORN on the air before the election. You have to hear how they are responding to Attorney Bauer's letter to the DOJ. They are construing it as Obama's attack on Free Speech.
Anywho, from a second-hand source, I ran into a line Limbaugh or one of those idiots is pushing now, along the lines of the free speech thing you mention: that Obama as President is going to try to shut down right-wing radio. Not only are they whipping up fears of Obama as terrorist, socialist, general boogeyman, but the hate talkers are setting themselves up, pre-emptively, as victims.
user-pic Call us crazy, but it's almost as if the GOP is looking to for any excuse to talk about ACORN in connection with voter fraud, and is less concerned with the making sure its facts are correct. No, I'm sure they're just trying to prevent this dangerous threat to the fabric of our Democracy.
user-pic I'm shocked, shocked that the RNC is continuing to flog a phony non-story about "voter" "fraud." Did they mention the GOP dude in CA just arrested for actual, real voter fraud? You know, to wear while watching the returns on Election Night, featuring the only two words we'll need to say in response to all the nonsense McCain & Co.
user-pic OK, this is what is scary about this assault on a group like ACORN. The Republicans are really good at accusing Democrats and others of exactly what they are doing or are about to do. This attack on ACORN is directly connected with their fear that they will not be able to pull off a massive fraud once again this cycle.
user-pic They did it even when the KNEW they'd be able to pull off the machine tampering, too. This syndicate has a deck full of aces up their sleeves. I'll say that one thing is slightly different this time; there's a lot of noise questioning the sleazy operation.
user-pic dlfletcher: They were concerned about "their definition" of voter fraud then too. Don't you remember when they purged African Americans in FLA and spread the rumors that those with unpaid parking tickets would have to pay up before voting?
user-pic The RNC people here in New Mexico are not the sharpest tools in the shed. You would think the morons would have learned their lesson when former US Attorney David Iglesias blew the whistle on his own party and helped Heather Wilson loose the nomination for republican senatorial candidate. And the retiring Pete Dominici probably retired because of the same scandal. Unfortunately (or fortunately for us) these guys never got the updated play book.
user-pic Face it, the GOP has lost this election and they know it. They're just trying to roll out their Excuse Patrol early. OT, but if you can catch Hardball, there is a segment with Amy Klobuchar talking about Bachmann and Chris is at his giggling best. And his next guest is Michael Smerconish (GOP pundit and radio host) and he's announcing that he's voting for Obama.
user-pic ACORN New Mexico should have waited until AFTER the local GOP held their conference call before displaying the refuting evidence. Why is it that republican party are rabidly against an organization who's sole purpose is to register as many people as possible? Bear in mind what Josh has said repeatedly, the "scandalous" cases involve voter registration fraud, NOT voter fraud. You can register Mickey & Minnie Mouse but they won't be showing up to vote on November 4th (oops, my bad, perhaps George & Laura will vote). But seriously, where's the harm in registering more people? It's the same with the repub's attitude toward the ACLU, their mission is to defend the Bill of Rights, what's so wrong with that? On a related topic, how come the majority of college educated people support the Democratic party while the majority of non college educated people support the republicans?
Justine Fox-Young has made a specialty of crying "Vote fraud!" Greg Palast has written about Justine regarding the same sort of histrionics around the time of the 2006 mid-term elections. I'm a NM resident, and I'm fairly certain this story isn't over *just* yet...
user-pic Also: "You need to remember one tactic of the totalitarian mindset, a tactic that belongs to the basic training of KGB cadres. They frequently accuse their victim of doing exactly what they, in fact, are doing. It forces the victim to use his meager resources defending himself from false challenges. But more importantly, it deflects attention from their own scheming and plotting."
