I can understand Sarah Palin feeling humiliated by her Troopergate scandal. An independent investigation concluded that she violated state ethics, abused the powers of her office, and lied about it. This isn't exactly easy to spin away this kind of violation of the public trust. called Palin's response "an embarrassment to Alaskans and the nation." The editorial added, "Her response is either astoundingly ignorant or downright Orwellian.... Palin's response is the kind of political 'big lie' that George Orwell warned against. "The report that came out also was very clear in that there was no unethical or unlawful behavior on my part," Palin told a local CBS affiliate in Pittsburgh, adding, "No abuse of power there at all." She "violated" the "Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act." Even Sarah Palin can read this and understand the plain meaning of basic words. This makes Palin's breathtaking lies all the more remarkable. She said the report was "very clear" that she hadn't done anything "unethical" and there was "no abuse of power" at all. I don't think I've ever seen a politician lie so brazenly. Is Sarah Palin shockingly dishonest or is she functionally illiterate? Comments (76) Comments The President of the United States of America has shown for 8 years that denial, even when faced with evidence, works. Who can blame a mere Governor for following in her President's footsteps? PERMALINK OK, but how does that TV reporter let her say that without questioning it? That person should be stripped of their right to call themselves a reporter. PERMALINK steve asks: "Is Sarah Palin shockingly dishonest or is she functionally illiterate?" Mac or Bible Spice lies, gets schooled by somebody, then repeats the lie .... and eventually, people shrug their shoulders and walk away shaking their heads in disbelief... PERMALINK Just watched TPMs breakdown of Ayers coming up at the debate. " To me this means that McCain will tell his buddy Scheifer to bring it up in a way that is to McCain's advantage. PERMALINK iirc, on her first pass at this, she clung to the life raft that there was nothing wrong with her firing monegan, in that she had a legal right to do so. while that was a monumental lie, it at least had that underlying connection with reality. but now she appears to have dropped the little qualifier, in much the same way that she continued to repeat the bridge to nowhere lie long after she had been busted. i would say that she's ignorant and dishonest but far more important is that she is utterly shameless: we see this in every aspect of her character that has been revealed. but given that the american public is onto her shtick, i don't know that dems have to spend a lot of time on her: she is an inconsequential figure in this election. i'm looking forward to how things will go in alaska when she's back on the job.... PERMALINK The President of the United States of America has shown for 8 years that denial, even when faced with evidence, works. He'd have blamed a partisan witch hunt, or disgruntled enemies with axes to grind, or perhaps he'd still insist that it's too early to make any statement on an on-going investigation; but he wouldn't have dared to go into outright lying like this on something so provably false. And his people would certainly have been able to drag this out a lot longer, until people simply stopped caring about it. I'm sure even Bush is dismayed at Palin's level of incompetent deception (assuming his staff has told him anything about it, as I can't imagine Mad Magazine has been explaining it to him in any detail). PERMALINK I really wouldn't know how to respond to this type of lying. and it is somehow repeated ad naseum with a straight face. We Democrats can call her out on it literally every day between now and November 4th, but really, the base will love her no matter what she does and independents are smart enough to see through this. PERMALINK Rhetorical question: why is the so-called "liberal", so-called "mainstream" media not calling out Palin on her appalling lies? Indeed, why did the "mainstream" media not only fail to challenge Palin's lies, but almost entirely fail to even report the verdict of the Alaska legislature's bipartisan investigation that found Palin had abused her power, violated the public trust and broken state law? The big scandal of this presidential campaign -- as in the last two campaigns -- is the blatant conflict of interest on the part of the media corporations, who have a multi-billion dollar interest in putting another right wing Republican in power to cut their taxes and deregulate their industry. Meanwhile millions of Americans -- and numerous "liberal" bloggers and pundits -- fail to recognize that the corporate media is not performing a public service of impartially and accurately informing the American people about the candidates and the issues, but is in actuality propagandizing the American people in furtherance of their for-profit interests and agenda. PERMALINK She's the equivalent of an investor who went all in a year ago. She's not getting in at the peak, but just before the crash. I doubt we will see her on the national scene again after this. PERMALINK Focusing on Palin is just a waste of energy at this point But Matt W, having a good laugh is never a waste of energy. Particularly not when it's at the expense of someone as deserving as Palin. Besides, her supporters are already making noise about her run in 2012, so it's never too early to get this stuff into print. Palin rallies against Obama has been raised at Obama/Biden rallies against Palin ("the same sort of foul signs and shouts"). WTF--has anone out there heard similar things shouted out against Palin? PERMALINK To me it's the American public that's at fault. We have demonstrated, by year after year of being manipulated by right wing propaganda and voting against our own self interests, that no lie is too far fetched to tell. Republicans have been doing this for years, so she is just carrying the torch. Difference is, after 8 years of the Cheney regime, with Bu$h serving as Pinocchio, American's are finally coming around to their senses. And as much as the corporate media hates it, they have to start acknowledging that fact. Hence, Palin is being thrown to the wolves for simply doing what republicans have always done. PERMALINK Doctor Biobrain wrote: "I'm sorry, but even Bush isn't this stupid ... he wouldn't have dared to go into outright lying like this on something so provably false." You may recall the pre-Iraq invasion press conference in which Bush, standing beside Tony Blair, asserted that the International Atomic Energy Agency had issued a report saying that Iraq could build a nuclear weapon within six months if they acquired the necessary uranium. The same day, the IAEA stated that they had issued no such report and had no idea what Bush was talking about. And then there was the post-invasion interview in which Bush told a European interviewer that "we found the weapons of mass destruction" in Iraq. Indeed, in many respects Sarah Palin's constant barrage of blatant lies seems to be modeled on Bush. PERMALINK The clip demonstrates in a self-contained manner Palin's inability to comprehend and/or ability to lie. The interviewer states that the report demonstrated that Palin's husband used state resources as "part of the effort to have" Wooten dismissed. Palin responds that the interview had her "facts wrong," because Wooten had not been dismissed but was still a trooper. PERMALINK "Is Sarah Palin shockingly dishonest or is she functionally illiterate?" She really is not very intelligent, and may just be repeating what her handlers' told her the report said. Which makes all concerned look more rock-stupid than ever, but if you consider the source it's not all that surprising. PERMALINK Paulin has the legal right to fire her Public Safety Commissioner and...
