When Sarah Palin dropped the ceremonial first puck at the Flyers' opener on Saturday night at the Wachovia Center, she was greeted by resounding (almost deafening) boos. Ed Snider, owner of the Flyers, had her introduced to the crowd more as a hockey mom than as the Republican candidate for vice president. She was flanked by Scott Gomez, the Rangers center, and Mike Richards, the Flyers center. While Philadelphia fans are known for not being shy about voicing disapproval, the question has been raised -- including by me in an earlier version of this post -- whether the appearance was appropriate at a sports event like this.
A nice spin for Palin would be that the boos were directed at Snider's decision to inject his politics into the game. The McCain campaign (run by morons) made a mistake agreeing to this and I hope Snider gets a lot of grief.
Palin is putting the NHL into the spotlight and any extra publicity that the NHL can get is good. The media who are complaining now because it is a Republican women. I heard no similar protests when Bill Ayres friend, Obama put on a Detroit Red Wing jersey at a rally in Detroit.
It's not a poor parenting choice, it's an obnoxious statement by Obama supporters. The only good thing is that they had to leave the bullhorns at the door. In any case, I heard plenty of cheering, so the jerks packing the game didn't have things entirely their way.
I think that's really really low and certainly not what this country needs right now. In a time of crisis people should come together not act like a bunch of crazy fools.
When Republicans boo Obama at a Republican rally it is because they are angry racists, but when hockey spectators boo Sarah Palin at a Flyers game, they are to be commended?
Lets read in the bible what it says about a person who winks and that should tell it all. This lady is cunning and has the behaviour of a control freak! Look what she did in alaska- She was found guilty of abusing her power.
Just watching you try to justify booing a little six ear old girl is hilarious. I thought you were the party of peace, love and compassion? I can't wait to see the peaceniks when their messiah loses on the fourth.
She has allowed herself to be used to drum up the most base sentiments in this contest. While the RNC's cynicism is to blame for the strategy, Gov. Palin must accept some responsibility for allowing her real enthusiasm and charisma to excite these most un-American feelings.
To quote a long dead American Patriot who stared down another bunch of political thugs, "Have you no sense of decency? Like I really believe you'd be as upset if it were Obama doing this.
and a bit naive to you northeastern folks, but I thought since we were all Americans, it would be alright for Americans running for office to throw out a first pitch, flip a coin, or in this case, drop the puck. We should be able to talk to one another, argue with one another, and still have a cup of coffee or a beer together. Just appears a bit unseemly to a naive fella from Texas....
I think people (seems to be mostly men) who go to professional sports events are stupid too though. They were probably mad the beer concession was closed for 5 minutes and the on-ice fighting was delayed.
You are applauding the actions of a crowd of mostly men who booed a little 6 year old girl. It shouldn't matter what the politics are, you could have called the front office later, but to boo a kid? What's going to be shown in the news is a little girl who had more class in the face of those tasteless boos than the whole of Philadelphia.
Likewise, no child should see their parent get humiliated. Parents should be able to be dignified and strong in the minds of their kids. I wonder if the child thought that the crowd was booing because of her, and not because of her mom?
Add this to the fact that Barack Obama gave rallys in four different locations around Philadelphia today. Then remember that Philadelphia fans are rabid, deranged lunatics, and WHAT ON EARTH WAS THE GOP THINKING? Maybe they were hoping that the incensed fans would rush the ice and maul Governor Palin so that McCain would be able to replace her with Mitt Romney.
The people that think she would have been warmly welcomed also believed that flower petals would line the streets of Baghdad as our troops were welcomed as liberators.
Palin has consistently brandished her children as political props, and today cynically used her daughter as a kind of shield against what she knew would be an unfriendly reception. They were clearly instructed to go out waving as if it was all adulation instead of condemnation.
Since when did sports stadiums become sacrosanct temples where politicians dare not tread? Politicians often throw out the first ball at baseball games. Heck, isn't it an American sports tradition that, along with a stop at Disney World, the championship sports team goes to the White House? Spare me this faux outrage, especially on behalf of the players. Reading this ridiculously overwrought blog, one would think they were forced to sell their first born into slavery. What the players had to do is no more insidious or evil than the plant manager who has to serve as guide when a politician come to visit the factory for a speech and photo op. Please stop trying to spin it into some darkly McCarthy-esque coercion. I voted Obama in the New York primaries and will vote for him again in a couple weeks. But this sanctimonious outrage to Palin's visit is nothing less than a double standard. I am sure that President Obama will throw out the first baseball on Opening Day for the Washington Nationals next year. Are you going to condemn that for "injecting politics in a place it should not be"?
Wonder what you loving, open-minded, tolerant liberals would be saying if Barack had showed up at the Texas-Oklahoma football game today and had been booed by half the stadium, if not more? And as for Palin using her children as props, give her a break! If she's not with her kids, you says she's being a bad mom. If she's with her kids, you say she's using them as props.
NoMilk@10:39p: "Sorry to see Obama supporters fueling a climate of hatred against their political opponents." Hockey fans booing a political figure = pretty natural behavior. One way you can tell them apart is that the latter involves death threats, where the other only expresses disapproval.
They were not booing Piper, they were booing her idiot mother who thought it would be a good idea to bring her young child there to shield herself from the boos she know she would get.
Oh, and by the way, Ed Snider writes the paychecks for the Flyers, so he is free to do as he pleases. Why is this any different than John Kerry throwing out the first pitch at a Red Sox game during his campaign in 2004? Excuse me, I forgot that the NY Times is in the tank for Obama and his Acorn buddies. Lynn, as a hockey writer, did you know that all three local hockey teams were in action tonight? News flash: Rangers 4, Flyers 3 -- Posted by Rangers Fan * 59.
Way to destroy your credibility before even stating your case. And why do you care what happens at a game you're not at, in a city you don't live in, in a sport you don't follow? Stuff like this happens all the time, no one votes based on puck-dropping.
Shame on her for what happend to Piper tonight, NOT the fans who were forced to witness the exploiting of her children once again. Honestly, I can't imagine a mother doing this to her own.
She shows up for a cheap photo op in a public venue and the public let her know what they thought of her. Yet somehow, the wingnuts here think it's Obama's fault.
If she'd been an honest campaigner, it might not have happened, but she's been working her crowds to trash Obama for weeks. She shows up in a democratic stronghold and expects respect?
No objection to THEIR crowds screaming to murder a Presidejntial candidate; But we saw that hypocrisy before on the subject of pregna...
