Comments In the latest instance of inflammatory outbursts at McCain-Palin rallies, a crowd member screamed "treason!" during an event on Tuesday after Sarah Palin accused Barack Obama of criticizing US troops. "I hope Americans know that is not what our brave men and women in uniform are doing in Afghanistan. The US military is fighting terrorism and protecting us and protecting our freedom." Shortly afterward, a male member of the crowd in Jacksonville, Florida, yelled "treason!" loudly enough to be picked up by television microphones. During Tuesday's event, Palin continued her frontal assault on Obama's character by noting Bill Ayers after repeating a debunked lie about the Illinois Democrat's tax record that even McCain himself has stopped using. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, will now claim that he was unaware of his radical background?" Palin's political shot was effective with the Republican faithful, drawing a deep, collective "ooooh." hateful and anti-Semitic," most recently on the occasion of the Iranian President's visit to the UN. Later, in the tax policy section of her speech, Palin managed to repeat a thoroughly debunked claim about Obama's voting record that even McCain himself has stopped using. Even on middle class -- hard working everyday families across this great nation -- making $42,000 a year," she said. org noted in August, McCain's campaign originally claimed Obama voted to raise taxes on families making $32,000 a year, but have since changed their tax ads to say that Obama's vote would impact individuals making $42,000 per year -- not families as Palin repeated today. View Only Top Items in This Story "For me, the heels are on, the gloves are off," she announced at high noon Monday to a group of Republican donors at the Naples Beach Club. As the donors sipped their bloody marys and mimosas, she added, in a conspiratorial stage whisper, "I'm sending the message back to John McCain also: Tomorrow night in his debate, might as well take the gloves off." "Okay, so, Florida, you know that you're going to have to hang on to your hats," she said at a morning rally in Clearwater, "because from now until Election Day, it may get kind of rough." David Broder that the campaign would "go down in history as stupid if they don't unleash" Palin. Well, the self-identified pit bull has been unleashed -- if not unhinged. Barack Obama, she told 8,000 fans at a rally here Monday afternoon, "launched his political career in the living room of a domestic terrorist!" This followed her earlier accusation that the Democrat pals around with terrorists. "This is not a man who sees America the way you and I see America," she told the Clearwater crowd. "I'm afraid this is someone who sees America as imperfect enough to work with a former domestic terrorist who had targeted his own country." McCain had said that racially explosive attacks related to Obama's former pastor, the Rev. Bill Kristol in an interview published Monday: "I don't know why that association isn't discussed more." Worse, Palin's routine attacks on the media have begun to spill into ugliness. In Clearwater, arriving reporters were greeted with shouts and taunts by the crowd of about 3,000. Katie Couric's questions for her "less-than-successful interview with kinda mainstream media." At that, Palin supporters turned on reporters in the press area, waving thunder sticks and shouting abuse. One Palin supporter shouted a racial epithet at an African American sound man for a network and told him, "Sit down, boy." McCain's swoon is largely out of his control, the result of an economic collapse that ignited new fears Monday when the Dow Jones industrial average closed below 10,000 for the first time in four years. That's why his lead in Florida polls, which once reached as high as 15 points, has turned into a three-point deficit. Petersburg Times reported that the Florida Republican Party chairman, after questioning Palin's aptitude, was told that he couldn't fly on her plane) and now Palin's rage. GOP vice presidential nominee even found a way to blame the market decline on the yet-to-be-enacted tax policies of the yet-to-be-elected Obama. "If you turn on the news tonight when you get home, you're gonna see that, yah, this is another woeful day in the market, and the other side just doesn't understand -- no!" she said at an afternoon fundraiser at the home of mutual fund giant Jack Donahue. "Especially in a time like this, you don't propose to increase taxes. The phoniest claim in a campaign that's full of them is that Barack Obama is going to cut your taxes." Of course, Obama never promised to cut taxes for people at $10,000-a-plate lunches in air-conditioned tents on waterfront compounds. New York Jets owner Woody Johnson -- reacted without applause to Palin's Joe Six-Pack lines. After they didn't strike up the usual "Drill, baby, drill" or "USA" chants, Palin, rattled, read hurriedly through the rest of her speech. Palin also told those gathered that Obama doesn't like American soldiers. "He said that our troops in Afghanistan are just, quote, 'air-raiding villages and killing civilians,' " she said, drawing boos from a crowd that had not been told Obama was actually appealing for more troops in Afghanistan. "See, John McCain is a different kind of man: He believes in our troops," she said. "It's going to be a hard-fought contest, especially in these swing states, some maybe we would not have expected," she admitted to donors. She allowed that "John McCain and I need to do a better job" of talking about the economy. At other times, she had troubles of her own, as when she spoke over the weekend of "our neighboring country of Afghanistan" or when she got choked up at the Clearwater rally, saying, "Some of your signs just make me wanna cry," without explaining which ones or why. But then the gloves came off, the heels came out, and Palin was once again talking about her opponent hanging out in a terrorist's living room.

noted below, in his piece today about the abuse that Palin supporters heaped on reporters at a Florida rally yesterday, WaPo's Dana Milbank wrote that one supporter had hurled an unspecified racial epithet at an African American sound man before saying, "sit down, boy." A reporter who was there tells me what that unspecified epithet was: "Uppity negro." Late Update: I should have made it clearer that this happened at a rally where Palin was stoking anger by attacking Katie Couric and the "mainstream media." Having been raised in the South and being familiar with our neighbors to our south, I could just about promise you that it wasn't "negro". We don't have polished racists that adhere to prounuciation guides. How did the slur go from "sit down, boy" to "uppity negro"? This is a side issue to the real hate mongers yelling "terrorist" and "treason" at McCain-Palin rallies. McCain should be asked in the debate tonight about the venom displayed during the campaign rallies of late. It could even just be about the shout of "terrorist" since we have that video. At a certain point, he needs directly to embrace or disavow the racist bile that his campaign is fomenting. Same thing with the person who shouted "terrorist", possibly even the one who shouted "kill him." All uppity Negros everywhere, are going to have one hell of a fantastic election night. And with TPM and the MSM talking about it I'd say the MSM should talk about it -- but should do so as it is, ie, hate rallies. On the other hand, if the MSM is still obsessed with the notion of parity and just going "He said, she said" and feelin good about their "objectivity" then that makes me mad. stating that "both campaigns are getting down and dirty". Makes me sick that the press is so lazy as to blow-off reporting of blatant lying with this equivocation nonsense of "they all do it". Some Republicans are very normal, calm, nice people - I'm actually friends with several. Others get off on toxic tactics like this, making their nastiness the core of voter attraction. Believe it or not, some people are attracted to shit like that. They thrive on it and the more their supporters hear it, the more will come out of the woodwork and rally on. I agree, this is NOT the PR that attracts average voters, but Republicans are only out to attract their base this late in the game. Since everything they're doing is just concentrating their base into a smaller and more vicious and violent minority, I honestly think that's their plan. Someone on an earlier thread says 'scorched earth' and I think that's right. If they can't run the country, they'll make sure there's no country left for Obama to run. Kevin Drum called it a month ago - the end result of McCain's vicious campaign is going to be a nation and a political environment so toxic nothing can get done. We will have a huge majority and Obama will have loads of political capital. Not the first time I've thought Drum was clutching those pearls so tight he was cutting off the oxygen to his brain. It would be interesting to know how other people feel about this, but I'm getting tired of, to say nothing of depressed by, the constant drip, drip, drip of stories about the soullessness of the McCain campaign. Other people may be able to deal with them better than I, but I end up feeling helpless around a lot of the ugliness out there. It might help if TPM put up more positive stuff that Obama is doing; clips of his adverts, news he's making that kind of stuff, as a kind of antidote to the dark side of the Republican Party. While the later will always be with us, the hope stuff, is what keep many of us going. "Obama supporters are starting to sound a bit like Tawana Brawley." It seems that Matthew Weaver, after wiping Larry Johnson's jizz off of his face and getting a new TPM account - decided to post here again. before i get into this topic much respect to lilibet hagel wife of 1 of my favorite GOP Senator Chuck hagel, iam a big,big huge fan of chuck hagel and richard lugar the real mavericks, now back to this really whut mcbush and palin is tellin these uneducated racist imbred hicks in small town is don't vote for the uppity nigger that went to harvard and princeton university bkuz hes lookin down on u white trailer trash hockey moms or whateva, whut u think about that sfc wallace,fogu2,lalo35,matthew weavers and dumbass bil c? I early voted today in Atlanta and if the line is any indication of what voter turnout will be in the African American community, Obama has an outside chance. com the models projected AA's to be 28% to 30% so far according to the AJC it's been at 41% of all early voting.... I swear when i arrived i didn't know if i was going to vote or attend a Civil Rights meeting, I kept expecting people to break out singing "We shall overcome." Tena, Nah, I never thought you were defending Republicans. You see it as good PR for Obama, which in a lot of ways it is. I also see it as POTENTIALLY good PR for McCain as well in rallying someone of the hardcores who have been too shy in coming out of the woodwork. And I will say this - you could be right about bringing some more racists out of the woodwork to vote, but I really rather think that most voting racists are already lined up to vote against that mmmmmm on Nov. "Uppity" in the black community has very NEGATIVE overtones. The GOP suggestion of implying that Obama is "arrogant" is the same thing as saying that Obama is a "Uppity Negro" in the eyes of African-Americans because Obama is NOT arrogant what so ever. Obama's "cool" demeanor is more about being STEADY and calm rather than being arrogant. Funny old thing, a troll is - no matter where they start out in argument in this campaign, it always winds up in the same place. This may in fact be the single best thing to break through the Southern Strategy with. And it is breaking down - Va, N Carolina - November 4 could be one of the biggest watershed days in our history. I tried to post this earlier - ChicagoJoe, the press will only be in love with her as a story as long as the public is and there isn't enough there to keep anyone's interest for very damn long. third attempt at posting this but the real tragedy wasn't that the Brawley fiasco occurred but that a situation existed which made it believable to so many people. So many absurd things had already occurred that it made one more seem very plausible. They keep pumping sedatives into McMadman so his blood won't squirt out his ears. He'll be outwardly calm tonight, like a lead cask holding nuclear waste. He'll look right into the camera and deny any and all niggative stuff being horsebacked by his klan; some cable channel will be simulatneously broadcasting his "Obama = O'Terra-ism" schklumpf. You won't see Brokaw ask this follow-up, "But Senator McCain, you have run several commercials accusing Senator Obama of the unthinkable and untrue! Instead, you'll see Brokaw simper along, "Yes, it is too bad our political process is marred by the negative. I keep hoping people will finally crawl out of the barrel of shit instead of standing there complaining about the smell. The polls show it could be happening, but I'm still paranoid about the stop-the-vote-steal-the-vote cheaters. The founder of AIP Joe Vogler, the raging anti-American and Todd-Sarah's political godfather, said, "My government is my worst enemy. suggested killing Barack Obama, according to Secret Service spokesman Malcolm Wiley. The shout of "kill him" followed a Sarah Palin rant on Obama's relationship with radical Chicagoan Bill Ayers. Wiley says the Secret Service did not begin looking into the matter until press reports, namely Dana Milbank's article in the Washington Post, surfaced today, because no agents at the event heard anything. "The Secret Service did not hear any threatening statements directed at targets under its protection and no threatening statements were reported to us by law enforcement or citizens at the event," Wiley told Radar. Also unclear: whether the remark was directed at Obama or Ayers if the words were actually "kill" and "him." Wiley said that the Secret Service had tried to get in touch with Milbank to get his account of the event but was unsuccessful. Were the they able to confirm the remark they'd "be looking to talk to that person," Wiley said. "We investigate everything because we take all threats seriously." morninmist on October 7, 2008 5:44 PM She should be mortified about herself, McCain should feel flummoxed about his own nasty boy self, and the racist nutbags at these rallies who shout out this kind of garbage should be invited to suck on a hand grenade forthwith. sailor on October 7, 2008 5:49 PM Andrew Sullivan brought up whether they could be increasing the likelihood of a nut going after Obama on his blog earlier today, which I actually thought was really interesting.
