I am now feeling bad for this moron, she is in so completely over her head. This is like one of those awkward moments in school when a student is giving a presentation they are completely unprepared for, and the teacher knows it, the student knows it, and everyone watching knows it, yet you sit there and go through the charade. Do not be mistaken, this is why they are trying to delay the debates next week. I have to say, it is terrifying this woman might one day be President, but I am AB-SO-LUTE-LY dying to see how Hugh Hewitt, Red State, and the Weekly Standard are going to spin this. September 25th, 2008 at 1:28 pm comrade scott Says: Feel sorry for her? She's a big fish from a really little bond, Head Heather/Cheerleader in her clique (and living in a small town, I know how the social dynamics work, it's junior high school writ large). And I hope to high heaven that word press doesn't eat this post. This is seriously the best the Republicans have to offer. Meanwhile, did you know that in the 2009 Virginia Governor's race, only one Republican is expected to run? September 25th, 2008 at 1:33 pm justme Says: Then there's this little charmer. COURIC: Why isn't it better, Governor Palin, to spend $700 billion helping middle-class families struggling with health care, housing, gas and groceries? Instead of helping these big financial institutions that played a role in creating this mess? PALIN: Ultimately, what the bailout does is help those who are concerned about the health care reform that is needed to help shore up the economy- Oh, it's got to be about job creation too. So health care reform and reducing taxes and reining in spending has got to accompany tax reductions. She's like a fourth-grader trying to remember her lines in the school play. Now we see why they're trying to pull out of the debates. Also, from Couric (via thinkprogress) "She's not always responsive when she's asked questions," Couric said of Palin. "It was a really interesting experience for me to interview her yesterday," she added. September 25th, 2008 at 1:34 pm Rick Taylor Says: I watched it, and literally thought it could almost be a Saturday Night Live sketch. I had thought that my contempt for Republicans was at an absolute low before, but when McCain could nominated her and with very few exceptions they all nodded and pretended it was a defensible choice, I realized they didn't even have a shred of integrity. Forget about conservatives, we would have lashed into him. We may be a circular firing squad, but at least there is some attempt at any independent thought and criticism. I wonder if Republicans will continue to pretend after these interviews. September 25th, 2008 at 1:36 pm Comrade Jake Says: The best part: Couric explaining that the word she's looking for is "mock". I joked the other day that McCain might have pulled his latest stunt to provide media-storm cover for this EPIC FAIL of an interview Palin gave. The more I see of the interview, the more clear it becomes that the joke is on us. September 25th, 2008 at 1:37 pm Anna Granfors Says: Dude, that's NOTHING. PALIN: Ultimately, what the bailout does is help those who are concerned about the health care reform that is needed to help shore up the economy- Oh, it's got to be about job creation too. So health care reform and reducing taxes and reining in spending has got to accompany tax reductions. September 25th, 2008 at 1:37 pm A different Rick Says: What--did she say something factually incorrect? Alaska does, in fact, have a very narrow maritime border with a foreign country--Russia! September 25th, 2008 at 1:37 pm Larsmacomb Says: For a number of years I was a coach of a highly competitive intercollegiate debate program. My goal as a teacher was always to prepare my students so that they would never, never, never ever end up sounding like Sarah Palin in that interview. One of my routine obligations when I attended intercollegiate tournaments with my students was to judge rounds of debate between students from universities other than my own. Sometimes I would have to judge as many as ten or more 2-hour debates in the duration of a 3-day weekend. There were occasions when I would hear students struggling-struggling to find words, struggling to get on to the next thought, struggling to hide their ignorance. As long as they were civil in their demeanor and had, at least, some sense of shame, I always felt bad for them. I couldn't, of course-such interventions are not allowed during competition. My students were not perfect, but they were taught never to begin sentences they couldn't finish, and to concede points that they could not win. It is unlikely that debate prep will help in this regard because it does not seem to be a matter either of her intellectual background or her discursive nature to ascertain the difference between reasoned argument and wingnut horseshit. What you are hearing is all she really knows about non-Alaskan, non-Christianist, non-moosehunting matters. The Republicans have nervously had their fingers crossed for several weeks. Upon seeing a sassy young politician deliver a scripted speech full of barbs and insults, they thought they had a bona fide Eliza Doolittle in their midst. Some briefing books, a little neocon philosophy, and voila, the rain in Spain would fall mainly on the plain. Unlike those poor students I had to listen to years ago, I do not feel sorry for her. It is not a debate tournament trophy that she seeks as the grail for her struggle, it is my aching country. The audacious entertainment of her juvenile delusions of grandeur. Had she never been tapped for the vice-presidency, it is likely her Governorship would be tainted or perhaps curtailed by the full investigation and prosecution of the troopergate scandal. She promised full participation in a bipartisan investigation probably because she does not understand-does not grasp-that she did anything wrong! She loves her sister, so going after her former brother-in-law must certainly have felt like the right thing to do. Monegan, who did not understand how important this was to her (and probably did not see the need to sack a satisfactory cop for being a bad husband and father), got in the way and needed to be shown the door. Given what the subpoenaed testimony would likely have revealed (from all of the reports now trickling out of Alaska), she would have most likely been censured, perhaps impeached-or at least embarrassed enough to have ended her career as Governor with one term. Yet, despite her limited education, her highly limited curiosities, and her parochial, backwoods political experience, she still manages to see herself as annointed and entitled. September 25th, 2008 at 1:38 pm A different Rick Says: What--did she say something factually incorrect? Alaska does, in fact, have a very narrow maritime border with a foreign country--Russia! September 25th, 2008 at 1:38 pm Rick Taylor Says: Why didn't McCain choose Mike Huckabee to be his VP? He would have shored up the base as well, and wasn't a complete unvetted unknown. I used to think he would have been a laughable choice, but certainly not compared to Palin. What's also frightening is McCain is making these goofy decisions, and then he (and the Republicans) can never admit he goofed up. It's like when he ended up insulting a Nato ally rather than admit he'd misheard a question. September 25th, 2008 at 1:38 pm Mary Says: That "Worst Week" show ad right before the interview was purely accidental, right? I'm going to have nightmares about giant helium-filled Putin heads invading North American airspace tonight. September 25th, 2008 at 1:39 pm 4tehlulz Says: >>"It was a really interesting experience for me to interview her yesterday," she added. Is "a really interesting experience" another one of those new-fangled euphemisms for "torture"? McCain is still going to get at least 40% of the vote, even if he loses. Forty percent will still vote Republican, despite all the evidence of incompetence and venality. September 25th, 2008 at 1:40 pm Montysano (All Hail Marx & Lennon) Says: Wait.......... September 25, 2008 PALIN'S UNIQUE SPIN ON THE BAILOUT.... When Sarah Palin sat down with ABC's Charlie Gibson a couple of weeks ago, it was a fairly dominant story. Palin's interview yesterday with CBS's Katie Couric is drawing significantly less attention, obviously because it's facing tougher competition from other news developments. And the McCain campaign has to be thrilled, because the truth is, Palin is getting worse at answering questions, not better. The question was provocative, but hardly unexpected given recent events. Couric asked Palin, "Why isn't it better, Governor Palin, to spend $700 billion helping middle-class families who are struggling with health care, housing, gas and groceries? Allow them to spend more, and put more money into the economy, instead of helping these big financial institutions that played a role in creating this mess?" Palin, in a rambling and largely incoherent response, responded, "That's why I say I, like every American I'm speaking with, were ill about this position that we have been put in. But ultimately, what the bailout does is help those who are concerned about the health care reform that is needed to help shore up our economy. Um, helping, oh, it's got to be about job creation, too. Shoring up our economy, and getting it back on the right track. So health care reform and reducing taxes and reining in spending has got to accompany tax reductions, and tax relief for Americans, and trade -- we have got to see trade as opportunity, not as, uh, competitive, um, scary thing, but one in five jobs created in the trade sector today. All of those things under the umbrella of job creation." Worse, if you watch the clip, you might notice that Palin was intermittently referring to notes. In other words, this is the kind of response she offers on a question about the Wall Street bailout with help. First-time candidates for national office often struggle to get over the learning curve. Governors and senators will visit a coffee shop in Iowa City eight months before the caucuses, get confused about a policy detail, but improve as the campaign rolls on. They take their time, go through extensive briefings, and learn to get good. By the time the conventions are done, these candidates are supposed to be on the top of their game. Palin, however, is in a situation where failure is almost impossible to avoid. She's never expressed any knowledge of national or international issues, she's never expressed any interest in national or international issues, and she's making humiliating mistakes under the glare of the national spotlight, with just six weeks until Election Day. With some time in government, Palin might become a less embarrassing candidate. But at this point, it's almost unfair for McCain to set her up for this kind of fiasco. PERMALINK The Democrats are falling into a trap with the bailout. McCain will then oppose the bill and Obama will lose the election. That's my thinking at this moment, and I'm sweating bullets. PERMALINK luckily, her voice is so grating that no one would want to listen to more than 15 seconds anyway, so no one notices she says nothing. I apparently know more about this bailout than Palin does, at least I read it. PERMALINK The theory that McCain pulled that "no debate" stunt yesterday in order to distract attention away from the Couric-Palin interview is gaining more credibility. PERMALINK More Palin, maybe even better/worse: "COURIC: You've cited Alaska's proximity to Russia as part of your foreign policy experience. PALIN: That Alaska has a very narrow maritime border between a foreign country, Russia, and on our other side, the land-- boundary that we have with-- Canada. It-- it's funny that a comment like that was-- kind of made to-- cari-- I don't know, you know? COURIC: Explain to me why that enhances your foreign policy credentials. PALIN: Well, it certainly does because our-- our next door neighbors are foreign countries. And there in Russia-- COURIC: Have you ever been involved with any negotiations, for example, with the Russians? We-- we do-- it's very important when you consider even national security issues with Russia as Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where-- where do they go? It is-- from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia, because they are right there. I have been completely unable to understand her answers in both interviews. She has W's inability to form complete sentences combined with a high schooler's bullet points taken straight from Cliff's Notes. PERMALINK Palin was chosen by McCain as the most qualified person to step into his shoes should he be unable to fulfill his duties as President. If he's unable to debate Obama tomorrow night, McCain should ask Palin to do it. PERMALINK In baseball, if you call up a pitcher from the minors before his time, you can destroy his confidence (and thus his career) permanently. Palin's confidence isn't the issue, but she'll never have another chance to make a first impression. Palin probably had a decent amount of long-term upside, which Team McCain sacrificed on a doomed campaign. McCain would still have lost if he had gone with Romney, but he would probably have lost more gracefully and without wasting a (formerly) rising star in the GOP. PERMALINK And this is the women that Bill Clinton is impressed with and that we should be careful not to criticize. And Billary invite McCain to the Clinton summit today... I hate to say it but maybe Maureen Dowd is correct for once? Actually , I think Bill is the one with the bigger problem with Obama and is doing his best to subtly weaken his candidacy and prop up McCain/Palin. It's getting to the point where I almost wished I voted for GHW in 1992 (but no Dole in 96). you might notice that Palin was intermittently referring to notes. You may recall that the teleprompter exploded or got stolen by bears or something during her RNC speech, and so she winged it and ended up giving the best convention speech ever, present, past or future. So please don't suggest that she is less than the most brilliant policy genius this nation has produced since its inception more than 200 years ago. PERMALINK * WHAT WE HAVE LEARNED FROM CAMPAIGNS At the end of the "Morning Joe" show each morning, each of the three regulars makes a tongue-in-cheek statement of what each has learned today. So, what have we learned from the campaigns for president? We have learned that: You can actually see Russia from Alaska Ordinary workers at their tasks determine the fundamental soundness of the US economy Obama's use of "look" to introduce a thought has spread to pundits and other politicians The negative and misleading ads of the McCain campaign were caused by Obama's refusal to engage in a series of town hall debates Small town people can be bitter and cling to guns or religion Hillary Clinton will be ready on day one McCain has the requisite experience; Obama gave a speech Obama is a Christian, as far as Hillary knows Hillary Clinton is from Scranton Dennis Kucinich is conversant with UFOs Dennis Kucinich has a gorgeous wife Joe Biden can give a one word answer Joe Biden's wife is "drop-dead gorgeous" Ron Paul is angry, but not as angry as Mike Gravel Sarah Palin may be kept in Social Security's lock box until the election Sarah Palin can field dress a moose. PERMALINK Something to be remembered is that her rise in local Wasilla politics was apparently based upon her repeating the rightwing's culture war rhetoric of the 90's, introducing a national platform into a race that was typically more local. Not only do Republicans not use that rhetoric anymore, but it was all just meaningless gibberish to begin with and doesn't work with non-culture issues at all. So it's not like she was just a local person who focused on local issues instead of national issues. She rose to fame on an empty talk-radio platform which left her unable to deal with local AND national issues. She was in over her head even in smalltown Alaska politics. PERMALINK So health care reform and reducing taxes and reining in spe...

September 26, 2008, 0:00 am Palin Problem Shes out of her league. By Kathleen Parker If at one time women were considered heretical for swimming upstream against feminist orthodoxy, they now face condemnation for swimming downstream -- away from Sarah Palin. To express reservations about her qualifications to be vice president -- and possibly president -- is to risk being labeled anti-woman. Or, as I am guilty of charging her early critics, supporting only a certain kind of woman. Some of the passionately feminist critics of Palin who attacked her personally deserved some of the backlash they received. But circumstances have changed since Palin was introduced as just a hockey mom with lipstick -- what a difference a financial crisis makes -- and a more complicated picture has emerged. As we've seen and heard more from John McCain's running mate, it is increasingly clear that Palin is a problem. Quick study or not, she doesn't know enough about economics and foreign policy to make Americans comfortable with a President Palin should conditions warrant her promotion. Yes, she recently met and turned several heads of state as the United Nations General Assembly convened in New York. And she's had executive experience as a mayor and a governor, though of relatively small constituencies (about 6,000 and 680,000, respectively). Finally, Palin's narrative is fun, inspiring and all-American in that frontier way we seem to admire. When Palin first emerged as John McCain's running mate, I confess I was delighted. She was the antithesis and nemesis of the hirsute, Birkenstock-wearing sisterhood -- a refreshing feminist of a different order who personified the modern successful working mother. Palin's recent interviews with Charles Gibson, Sean Hannity, and now Katie Couric have all revealed an attractive, earnest, confident candidate. Like so many women, I've been pulling for Palin, wishing her the best, hoping she will perform brilliantly. I've also noticed that I watch her interviews with the held breath of an anxious parent, my finger poised over the mute button in case it gets too painful. Here's but one example of many from her interview with Hannity: "Well, there is a danger in allowing some obsessive partisanship to get into the issue that we're talking about today. And that's something that John McCain, too, his track record, proving that he can work both sides of the aisle, he can surpass the partisanship that must be surpassed to deal with an issue like this." When Couric pointed to polls showing that the financial crisis had boosted Obama's numbers, Palin blustered wordily: "I'm not looking at poll numbers. What I think Americans at the end of the day are going to be able to go back and look at track records and see who's more apt to be talking about solutions and wishing for and hoping for solutions for some opportunity to change, and who's actually done it?" If BS were currency, Palin could bail out Wall Street herself. If Palin were a man, we'd all be guffawing, just as we do every time Joe Biden tickles the back of his throat with his toes. But because she's a woman -- and the first ever on a Republican presidential ticket -- we are reluctant to say what is painfully true. He not only risks the wrath of the GOP's unforgiving base, but he invites others to second-guess his executive decision-making ability. Only Palin can save McCain, her party, and the country she loves. She can bow out for personal reasons, perhaps because she wants to spend more time with her newborn. No one would criticize a mother who puts her family first.
