Print GOP: Don't believe the hype, Obama not ready * Story Highlights * GOP fires back at Sen. Barack Obama after his acceptance speech Thursday * "Americans witnessed a misleading speech," Sen. VIDEO Decrease font Decrease font Enlarge font Enlarge font DENVER, Colorado (CNN) -- Despite a stadium packed far past capacity, with nearly 90,000 supporters wildly applauding nominee Barack Obama as he spoke Thursday, Republicans responded with one hand gesture: thumbs down. John McCain issued a statement minutes after Obama wrapped his speech: "Tonight, Americans witnessed a misleading speech that was so fundamentally at odds with the meager record of Barack Obama. Obama still has no record of bipartisanship, still opposes offshore drilling, still voted to raise taxes on those making just $42,000 per year and still voted against funds for American troops in harm's way. "The fact remains: Barack Obama is still not ready to be president." There was just too much glitz and glamour emanating from the floor of the Invesco Field, transformed by a crew of seasoned Hollywood veterans, conservatives said. McCain, for his part, put out an ad Thursday congratulating Obama on his nomination -- an unusually generous move for any politician, particularly one vying to become the next US president, pundits said. Dubbing Invesco the "Temple of Obama," GOP spin artists responded to the part of Obama's speech in which he promised to lower taxes on the middle class. com, GOP supporters wrote, "From the Temple grounds, Barack Obama will outline an agenda for America that includes raising taxes, increasing spending, putting government bureaucrats in charge of health care and isolating America from the benefits of the global economy. "While Barack Obama will talk about his plans to tax the 'rich' and cut taxes on the middle class, he will not say that his record includes voting for higher taxes 94 times and voting for a tax increase on those making just $42,000 per year." Obama told supporters, "As commander in chief, I will never hesitate to defend this nation, but I will only send our troops into harm's way with a clear mission and a sacred commitment to give them the equipment they need in battle and the care and benefits they deserve when they come home." In one of the sharpest zingers of the night, Obama said, "John McCain likes to say that he'll follow bin Laden to the Gates of Hell -- but he won't even follow him to the cave where he lives." McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds called the statement an "insult" on CNN's Larry King, saying it "ignored" everything McCain had done. Watch GOP pundits discuss Obama's speech On the economy, Bounds cut into Obama's claim that he will pay for a spending increase, by bringing up an Associated Press article on the subject published in August. Obama said Thursday night, "Now, many of these plans will cost money, which is why I've laid out how I'll pay for every dime -- by closing corporate loopholes and tax havens that don't help America grow. But I will also go through the federal budget, line by line, eliminating programs that no longer work and making the ones we do need work better and cost less -- because we cannot meet 21st-century challenges with a 20th-century bureaucracy." Bounds said Obama told the AP this month that he could not "promise" to reduce the budget deficit. Bounds quotes the article: "I do not make a promise that we can reduce it by 2013, because I think it is important for us to make some critical investments right now in America's families." Leslie Sanchez, a Republican strategist and former adviser to President Bush, said Obama missed a chance to offer "tangibility" and "real solutions" to how to pay for some of the promises Obama made. Watch Sanchez give Obama a 'C' Obama said, "I'll help our auto companies re-tool so that the fuel-efficient cars of the future are built right here in America. I'll make it easier for the American people to afford these new cars." advertisement "And I'll invest $150 billion over the next decade in affordable, renewable sources of energy: wind power and solar power and the next generation of biofuels; an investment that will lead to new industries and 5 million new jobs that pay well and can't ever be outsourced." Sanchez said Obama didn't explain where he would get the money for the $150 billion plan. Obama spent "half his time bashing McCain" and "talked loosely about the same old Democratic solutions that have failed," she said.

MySpace Better, But Still Deceptive We are pleased to see that in this ad McCain has corrected one earlier misrepresentation. He and others in his campaign have been saying for weeks that Obama once voted for a Democratic budget bill that McCain falsely claimed would raise taxes on persons making as little as $32,000 a year. We challenged that false claim in an article posted July 8 In this ad, McCain says Obama voted to raise taxes on persons making "just $42,000 a year," which is true for some but not all. A Misleading Picture The measure Obama supported contained a provision - which is not part of his current tax proposals - that would have increased the rate paid by those who have taxable income high enough to fall into the 25 percent tax bracket. The 25 percent rate would have increased to 28 percent, as it was before the Bush tax cuts. The effect would have been to increase taxes for a single taxpayer with as little as $32,550 in taxable income in 2008, after all deductions and exclusions from total annual earnings. But that works out to be $41,500 a year in total income for a single taxpayer with no dependents who takes the standard deduction and exemption allowed by the tax code. So it's true that a single taxpayer making $42,000 this year would see an income tax increase - of $15. That assumes the provision Obama voted for had been enacted and assumes further that the taxpayer did not qualify for more than the standard deduction. But the McCain ad misleads with a strong visual message. The $42,000 claim is true for a lone taxpayer, but it is not true for the woman who is pictured in the ad while the announcer is speaking. She's reading to two small children, apparently her own. If she is supposed to be a single mother of two, then she would be able to make as much as $62,150 in total income in 2008 without being affected by the measure Obama once supported. She would file as a "head of household" with more generous tax brackets and standard deductions than for a single filer, and she would also qualify for exemptions for herself and her two children. And anyway, as noted earlier, Obama isn't proposing to implement any such increase in the 25 percent bracket. This statement is simply not true for the vast majority of viewers who will see it. Obama, in fact, promises to deliver a $1,000 tax cut for families making up to $150,000 a year, and he says he would increase income tax rates, capital gains tax rates and taxes on dividends only for those with family incomes over $250,000 a year, or for single taxpayers making over $200,000. Tax Deception en Espaol McCain also released a 60-second, Spanish-language radio ad Aug. No doubt, Barack Obama is a popular figure, a celebrity who says the right thing. Are you ready for Barack Obama, for his tax plans that will hurt senior citizens? Are you ready for the higher taxes on income, savings and the sale of your home that Barack Obama promises? Because when it comes to the economy, experience matters, and he just doesn't have it. He says he'll give you change, but that's what he'll leave you with. The English-language translation supplied by the McCain campaign says Obama voted for higher taxes on "working families" making $42,000 a year. See All Discuss Comments: Submit Member Comments * Posted By: waiting4change @ 08/28/2008 1:10:17 PM Comment: THE TRUTH ABOUT MC CAIN: A lot of people are familiar with S&L crook Charles Keating's illegal contributions to John McCain in the 1980s. What most don't know, however, was that Keating was implicated in the BCCI takeover of a number of S&Ls, including his own. Carl Lindner, an Ohio billionaire with CIA and underworld connections who owned Chiquita Bananas, was Charles Keating's original partner, banker, and mentor. Lindner got Keating wrapped up with schemes involving the usual cast of BCCI characters, shady Saudi bankers, the Bush family, and Iran-Contra money laundering. Keating was always a sort of pass-through guy, without any real money of his own. But, a lot of money flowed through Keating to McCain and his wife, Cindy, in an Arizona real estate scam. Lindner who was recently convicted of financing Right-wing death squads in Colombia, is still giving big, dirty campaign checks to McCain. Now, that's a story that the American people need to hear. The public should get a view into the background of Lindner, Keating and McCain, which essentially boils down to big Mafia money that has flowed into the GOP and various extreme Rightist groups around the world since Meyer Lansky made a deal with the Republicans in the mid-1940s. John McCain got onto the mob pad because he was willing to do business, and Cindy's father was a long-time wise guy in the Bronfman-Marley liquor racket. In exchange for their legalized gambling and liquor concessions, Top Bosses Lansky and Giancana straightened up the mob's image in the southwest, in exchange the GOP (along with elements of the CIA) got a piece of the action. That sounds very much like the continued rhetoric of Rev. How much will it cost to pay for all the illegal aliens, and indigents, in this country to NOW have paid healthcare, so we can stand in line now ... He's already stated emphatically that he wants to downsize our military and dismantle our missile defense systems. You succeeded in getting YOUR MAN in there and running for President of the United States. Wright, Louis Farrakhan, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, reaction.
