In an interview just a month ago, she dissed the job, saying it didn't seem "productive." In fact, she said she didn't know what the vice president does. asked her about the possibility of becoming McCain's ticket mate. Palin replied: "As for that VP talk all the time, I'll tell you, I still can't answer that question until somebody answers for me what is it exactly that the VP does every day? I'm used to being very productive and working real hard in an administration. Politico's guide to the conventions Her evident distaste for the office would be part of her appeal: It would show McCain is running an anti-Washington, reformist campaign. Before Palin's election in December 2006 as the state's first woman governor, she served two terms on the city council of Wasilla, Alaska (population 6,700), and two terms as the mayor/manager of Wasilla. Remember Lloyd Bentsen's famous squashing of Dan Quayle in 1988 -- Dukakis ended up losing 40 states anyway. Clearly, McCain is after the female vote, as well as further solidifying his conservative base. Still, this imposes a risk for McCain because it undercuts the "inexperience" criticism of Obama. The best years of most people's lives were from 1995-2000. We had a Moderate Democratic President counterbalancing a very conservative Congress, but always managing to find the fine line in between which ensured unparalleled economic success. When Bush was elected, the American Public did one smart thing, they made sure that he didnt enjoy a carte blanche over government, by helping the Dems to come even with the Reps in the Senate. He effectively became lameduck, cause he would not budge against his extreme conservative agenda and would not work with a partially counter balancing congress. But he did manage to pass collossal tax cuts using an argument which moderate Dems supported in the Senate. This fine balance abruptly ended with the 2002 congressional election. The American Public, egged on with 9/11 gave Bush a mammoth Carte Blanche for the next 4 years. They set in motion an economic disaster of unparalleled magnitude, as well as pushed us into a war that made no sense. I voted for Clinton, Gore and Kerry in the last 3 elections, simply because I wanted to preserve the status quo intact. It is about ensuring that a failed system of 2 party government does not harm us any further. And now here at the crossroads, I find it very very difficult to vote for Obama, despite all the malaise around us, cause I know that when the Dems get the carte blanche of absolute power, they will be no different from the failed presidency of Bush. No matter how hokey I think McCain is, I do know that he will be snapped into centrist policymaking when he is forced to work with a very Liberal Congress. I hope that all independent minded voters see the same logic as I see. No matter who is in power, our govt is corrupt, and is beholden to special interests, be it from the liberal side or the conservative side. The moment we give a free rein to them via a carte blanche of absolute power, we will have effectively screwed up ourselves. If 8 years as a state Senator and 2 years as a US Senator is not enough experience, how can less than two years as governor of Alaska prepare someone? If this is McCains choice then not only shouldn't he be President, he shouldn't even be a Senator anymore. I can't wait to see what the Pravda main street media says about a mother of 6, one child with down syndrome. The NOW ladies will be besides themselves and will resort to the hillary clinton smear campaign technique finding something she did when she was 19. This will at last be a campaign of substance over this transparent "Change" diatribe. Quick Dems, get to the polls so you can decide what to believe in, you will actually have to stand for something now. Maybe inexperience is a good thing now that both tickets have some. I'm listening to the Repubs convince themself that this as a good pick. Obama's inexperience has been McCain's biggest argument. At 72 years old he picks an Alaska governor with less experience then Obama. He may croak, and we want our country in the hands of someone with NO foreign policy experience and little Washington knowledge?
