"He said the attacker calmly came to the front of the bus to show
        off the head.
\_ is my CCW permit valid on a bus in Winnipeg?
\_ this is why public transportion should be banned.
\_ Do you think you are safer on public transit or operating your
              own car?
\_ Dunno, but I'm not gonna be beheaded by a passenger in my car.
\_ I'm glad that 37 passengers were unwilling and unable to stop
a single psycho with a knife. There was a wacko on the bus in
Boston (the bus driver eventually kicked him off the bus) and I
was already planning for having to tackle the dude, even though
I'm hardly the heroic type, because there were women and kids
at risk. I was *hoping* some of the other guys nearby would
help me out if it came to that, but it looks like maybe that
was wishful thinking. Or else Canadians are just pussies.
\_ Or maybe the real world is not the action movie you
think it is. Dude snapped with no warning late at night
when most people were half asleep. I bet by the time it
was over most people didn't even fully understand what was
going on. Ever been mugged? It's not until after the dude
is running away that you actually have a chance to think
"hey wait, I'm on the ground, my jaw hurts, and that dude is
              running away with my wallet!"
\_ The morons got back on the bus and watched him dismember
                 someone.
\_ Not according to the article.
\_ Yes, according to the article.

                          Where?
\_ "The bus driver, Caton and a trucker at the
scene re-boarded to see what was happening.

Caton said he saw the suspect had the victim on
the floor of the bus and "was cutting his head
off and pretty much gutting him" with a large
                             hunting knife.

The attacker turned toward them and the three
men quickly left the bus, blocking the door as
the attacker slashed at them through an opening.
The three secured the door to prevent the man
from fleeing. Caton said the driver disabled the
vehicle after the attacker tried to drive it
                             away.

As the three guarded the door with a crow bar
and a hammer, the attacker went back to the body
and calmly came to the front of the bus to show
                             off the head."
\_ "Passengers exited the bus, and a trucker who
stopped provided wrenches and crowbars to
several of them so they could keep the suspect
on the bus until police came, witnesses told
                                Canadian TV."
The guy has already been stabbed multiple
times, and is in the process of being gutted,
and you think the other passengers should have
fought him? Why? Do you actually think they
could have done anything for the victim at
                                that point?
\_ How about, I dunno, before it got to
that point instead of running off the bus
                                   like pussies?
\_ Cause you are a real man who westles
bears and fucks 10 women a day. Oh
wait, I forgot. You are some pathetic
shit who last got laid in '98 and spends
his nights masturbating to war porn.
\_ I'm the first to admit I'm not the
type of guy you'd expect to intervene,
but I would. I think most healthy
males would if they have such a
                                         numerical advantage.
\_ What advantage? People are waking
up to discover they're on the RL
set of a slasher film. Panic is
                                            the default setting in that
                                            circumstance, and it's a miracle
                                            more people weren't hurt rushing
                                            off the bus.
\_ Yes, they did. They were still
                                               pussies.
\_ That's not what the CBC says. Heck, according to this,
even the victim was sleeping. The passengers did pretty
                    well. -!pp

\_ "Knife! Knife! Run!" followed by something like:
"Gee, do you think we should go back and check on that
                       guy?"
Good job to trap the dude in the bus, though, for
what good it did the victim.
\_ The guy who'd already been stabbed 50 or 60 times?
One of the first things they teach police and first
responders is that you're no good to anyone if you
                          make yourself a victim, too.
\_ People survive being stabbed that many times
and who is to know that he wouldn't go after
                             someone else?
\_ ...hence why they got everybody off the bus.
I'm all for outstanding heroics to save a
                                person's life, but second-guessing people
who arguably saved everyone else on the bus
is just dickish. They did what they thought
                                was right under the circumstances.
\_ I was on a BART train once and saw a guy running through cars,
randomly punching people in the face, then running to the next
car. I thought "WTF?" so I started following him. Some huge
extremely buff dude in the next car, who was probably a pro
football player or something (no kidding) then saw him and
tackled him and then sat on him until we got into Embarcadero
station, where the cops came and arrested him.
\_ Good on you and the other dude! How did it go when the
                 cops got there?

Canada bus attack leaves man decapitated The Associated Press Article Launched: 07/31/2008 08:27:30 AM PDT PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, Manitoba--A man aboard a Greyhound bus repeatedly stabbed and then decapitated a fellow passenger, witnesses said Thursday. The man was arrested for the killing, which occurred Wednesday night aboard a bus traveling from Edmonton, Alberta, to Winnipeg, Manitoba, The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said in a statement. Authorities declined to name the attacker and victim, and provided no other details about the attack. But passenger Garnet Caton said the victim was stabbed dozens of times by the man sitting next to him. The passenger then severed the man's head with a large knife. "We heard this bloodcurdling scream and turned around, and the guy was standing up, stabbing this guy repeatedly, like 40 or 50 times," Caton said from a hotel in Brandon, Manitoba, where he and other passengers had been taken to rest. Caton said passengers raced from the bus but then he, the bus driver and a trucker at the scene re-boarded to see what was happening. Caton said he saw the suspect had the victim on the floor of the bus and "was cutting his head off and pretty much gutting him." He said the attacker calmly came to the front of the bus to show off the head. "He dropped the head and went back and started cutting the body back up," said Cody Olmstead, a passenger from Kentville, Nova Scotia. The victim, who Caton said appeared Advertisement to be about 19, had been on the bus since Edmonton. He said the attacker boarded the bus in Brandon, Manitoba, about 80 miles west of Portage La Prairie. The suspect had been on the bus about an hour and initially did not sit near the victim. "He sat in the front at first, everything was normal," Caton said. "We went to the next stop and he got off and had a smoke with another young lady there. When he got on the bus again, he came to the back near where I was sitting. "About a half an hour later, we heard this bloodcurdling scream." Greyhound spokeswoman Abby Wambaugh said 37 passengers and one driver were on the bus. Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day called the attack bizarre, but did not discuss details, saying he did not want to jeopardize the investigation.

Printable version Passenger beheaded on Canada bus Police investigate the scene near Portage La Prairie, Manitoba, Canada Police say they do not know what may have provoked the attack A man on a Greyhound bus travelling across the Canadian Prairies has killed and decapitated a fellow passenger. An eyewitness said the victim was stabbed 50 or 60 times by the man sitting next to him, who then severed his head with a large knife. The driver pulled over and passengers fled from the bus, bracing the door to keep the attacker inside. A 40-year-old man was arrested after a stand-off lasting several hours and remains in police custody. The bus, with 37 passengers and a driver aboard, was travelling from Edmonton, Alberta, to Winnipeg, Manitoba. "All of a sudden, we all heard this scream, this bloodcurdling scream," passenger Garnet Caton told CBC television. "The attacker was standing up right over the top of the guy with a large hunting knife - a survival, Rambo knife - holding the guy and continually stabbing him... Bus passenger describes the attack The attack continued as passengers fled the bus and waited for police on a desolate stretch of the TransCanada Highway near Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. Mr Caton, the bus driver and a trucker who had stopped at the scene boarded the vehicle to see if the victim was still alive. he was cutting the guy's head off and pretty much gutting him up," Mr Caton said. The attacker ran at them, Mr Caton said, and they ran out of the bus, holding the door shut to prevent him getting out. with the head in his hand and the knife and just calmly stares at us and drops the head right in front of us," Mr Caton said. It was just like he was a robot or something," he added. Map: Canada A 40-year-old man was arrested by police at around 0100 (0700 GMT) on Wednesday night, Royal Canadian Mounted Police Sgt Steve Colwell told reporters. He said that police apprehended the suspect after a confrontation lasting several hours when the man broke a bus window and tried to escape. The man has not yet been charged, Sgt Colwell said, adding that he could release no further information on the investigation. When the attacker tried to drive the bus away, the driver disabled the vehicle. "Some people were puking, some people were crying, other people were in shock ... everybody was running, screaming off the bus," Mr Caton said. Sgt Colwell said the "brave" behaviour of the passengers and driver probably prevented anyone else from being hurt. Other passengers said that the attacker and his victim were sitting at the back of the bus and the victim, described as around 20 years old, was listening to music through headphones. The attack appeared to be unprovoked and it is thought the killer did not know his victim. The passengers have been taken to a hotel in Brandon, Manitoba, and are being given crisis counselling. CBC News A 40-year-old man is in custody in Manitoba after a young man was stabbed -- and, witnesses said, decapitated -- aboard a Greyhound bus travelling through the province overnight. Police officers spent Thursday examining a Greyhound bus where a passenger was reportedly stabbed and decapitated late Wednesday. Police officers spent Thursday examining a Greyhound bus where a passenger was reportedly stabbed and decapitated late Wednesday. The suspect, believed to be from outside Manitoba, was arrested early Thursday morning after a standoff lasting several hours and remains in RCMP custody . Charges have not yet been laid, and the suspect has not yet been interviewed, said RCMP spokesman Staff Sgt. Steve Colwell, adding that he could release no further information on the investigation. The RCMP declined to identify either the suspect or the victim. Thirty-seven people were aboard the bus en route to Winnipeg from Edmonton. Colwell said the "brave" behaviour of the passengers and driver probably prevented anyone else from being hurt. "It's not something that happens regularly on a bus," he said. "You're sitting there enjoying your trip and then all of a sudden somebody gets stabbed. Victim 'just a kid': witness Passenger Cody Olmstead, 21, told CBC News he had smoked a cigarette earlier in the trip with the victim, whom he described as a man in his late teens or early 20s. "I never took the time to know him, but he seemed to be OK, right, just a kid," said Olmstead, a Nova Scotia man who had been taking the bus from Alberta to Montreal. Garnet Caton said he heard a 'blood-curdling scream' and turned around to see a man repeatedly stabbing the passenger sitting next to him. Garnet Caton said he heard a 'blood-curdling scream' and turned around to see a man repeatedly stabbing the passenger sitting next to him. Caton said he heard a "blood-curdling scream" and turned around to see the attacker holding a large "Rambo" hunting knife above the victim, "continually stabbing him in the chest area." "He must have stabbed him 50 times or 60 times," said Caton. "Like, just everywhere, arms, legs, neck, chest, guts, wherever he could swing it, he got it," said Olmstead. "It looked kind of like a scuffle or an argument, you know, and then somebody's, like, 'Knife! I got pushed over, some lady got pushed over, I was just making sure everybody was OK, and we all got off the bus," said Olmstead As panicked passengers fled the bus, "the attacker was over top of the victim ... Trio tried to check on victim Caton, the driver and a trucker who had stopped at the scene later boarded the vehicle to see if the victim was still alive. "When we came back on the bus, it was visible at the end of the bus he was cutting the guy's head off and pretty much gutting him up," said Caton. The attacker ran at them, Caton said, and they ran out of the bus, holding the door shut as he tried to slash at the trio. When the attacker tried to drive the bus away, the driver disabled the vehicle, Caton said. "While we were watching the door, he calmly walks up to the front with the head in his hand and the knife and just calmly stares at us and drops the head right in front of us," said Caton. "They did an awesome thing, holding him in there, because if not, what would have happened?" RCMP crisis negotiators communicated with the suspect for several hours while he was on the bus. Around 1:30 am, he attempted to jump from a bus window and was subdued and arrested, RCMP said. Acted 'like he was a robot' Caton described the attacker as surprisingly calm. The suspect remained on the bus for several hours and was arrested around 1:30 am, RCMP said. The suspect remained on the bus for several hours and was arrested around 1:30 am, RCMP said. was taunting the police with the head in his hand," said Caton. Caton described the attacker as appearing "totally normal" earlier in the journey, even chatting with a young woman as he smoked a cigarette during a break. But when he got back on the bus, he moved his belongings from the front to a seat beside the victim in the back and about 20 minutes later began attacking the man, said Caton. "He didn't say anything to the victim at all," said Caton. Counsellors, chaplains aid passengers A six-year-old and other children were among the passengers who saw the horrific incident unfold, said Caton. "It was pretty traumatic," he said, adding that some passengers said they have been unable to sleep or eat since it happened. "It's disturbing," Olmstead agreed, adding that images of the previous night haunted him when he tried to fall asleep early Thursday morning. "I closed my eyes and I seen him in the window there, just like a madman." Bev Cumming, head of acute care services for the Brandon Regional Health Authority, said chaplains and psychiatric nurses have been working with dozens of passengers on the bus since they arrived in Brandon. Bus violence Recent violent incidents that have occurred on Greyhound buses in Canada: * Dec. Thirty-two passengers are injured when the bus lands on its side in a ditch. A pregnant woman is attacked by a man on a bus in London, Ont. "When you see something as horrifying as that, the brain locks on to those images. It's very difficult to release those images," Cumming said. "The assistance that people will get will be along the lines of coping in the immediate phase, learning what to do to reduce the profound effect this experience will have." Tim Sen, president of Trauma Management Group, which offers counselling and post-traumatic support in Ontario, said it will take time for bus passengers to come to terms with what they've seen. "They will experience very, very vivid flashbacks of that occurrence. they're still dealing with the shock and processing this horrific event," he said. Some people will still be in shock and being very flat in presentation, like nothing's happened. Everybody's going to go through this very difficult journey in a very different way." For children on the bus, Sen said, the response will depend on the age and maturity of the child. Generally, the key message caregivers should try to convey is that the situation is over and the child is now safe. If intense feelings and emotions and symptoms such as flashbacks don't subside within a few months, Sen said, the passengers should consider seeking professional help. Investigation is in 'full motion': minister Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day commented on the killing, saying that like most Canadians, he was horrified to hear witness accounts of the homicide. "The horrific nature of it is probably one of a kind in Canadian history," he told reporters late Thursday morning in Lvis, Que. The minister said he didn't want to say anything that would compromise the investigation, but "I can assure people that everything is in full motion and momentum to getting to the bottom of this incident." Questioned about whether weapons regulations should be put into place for buses, Day said it would be premature to look at such precautionary measures but added that the legal process will be followed as "aggressively as possible." The union that represents Greyhound drivers says the company must move to improve its security measures. "All we can do is physically observe the individual's behaviour, but obviously the item of destruction got on the bus somehow, and if it was visible to any driver, he would not have boarded the bus just for that simple reason," said Jim Higgs, a spokesman for the Amalgamated Transit Union. you have to funnel down a chute as your only way onto the bus.... At major terminals, I really believe now we have to do something -- not only that, we have to be investigating carry-on luggage and certain things like that." Greyhound spokeswoman Abby Wambaugh said the company is examining security on buses. "We are working with Transport Canada to review inter-city bus security," she said. "Due to the rural nature of our network, airport-type security is not practical for bus travel. Greyhound slaying sparks debate over bus security While a grisly slaying on a Greyhound bus has prompted calls for tighter security on Canadian bus line...
