7/22 Do you say Lin-nex or Line-nex?
\_ This has been settled. Torvalds is on record as calling it "Lin-nex".
\_ This has been settled. Torvalds is on record as calling it "Lin-
           nex".
\_ When Linus visited Berkeley, he said "My name is Li-nus so I say
Li-nux". Pronounce it how you like.
\_ What are other examples of a popular product with
              ambiguous pronunciations?
              \_ Jag-wire vs. Jag-u-war
\_ The manufacturer says "Jag-u-war", so that's how
the car is to be pronounced. I also think the
                           manufacturer's insistence on this pronunciation
for a common word is stupid.
\- i hear more discussions about "porsche"
\_ Hint: where did the Jaguar brand originate?
\_ If the tv ads are to be followed as a guide,
the pronuncation is closer to 'jag-u-wah'
              \_ flick-are vs. flicker
              \_ Porsche. I've heard "Porsh" and "Por-sha".
              \_ GIF. "Gif" vs. "Jif".
\- chmod > shmod, jig > gif, porsha > porshe, although first
two are the only ones i have strong feelings about.
and it's "the internet", not "internet".
              \_ Nikon. "Nite-con" vs. "Nic-con" vs. "Nee-con". The second
one is used in Hong Kong. The last one is the pronounciation
in Japan, which originated from the original Japanese name of
the company Nippon Kogaku (literally "Japan Optics").
\_ Never heard the first term ever. Where does the "t"
                    come from?
\_ Of course, the question is how to pronounce Linus. Torvalds
pronounces Linus differently from Charlie Brown.
\_ I read in the mid-90s he pronounced it Lee-nooks, consistent
              with Swedish pronunciation.
              http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/SillySounds
\_ You cannot imagine how unimportant it is how your pronounce 'linux'

3/27 Howdy, I just released the first beta of iGMonkey, a powerful
javascript framework designed to make it easy to query, retrieve,
manipulate, transform, and compare HTML and XML documents. Right now
iGMonkey targets the Google Homepage API
platform (http://www.google.com/apis/homepage but I plan to extend

3/24 Wow! FreeBSD sure is stable! After seeing soda's amazing uptime
record, I sure want to go replace my Linux boxes with FreeBSD!
Please do not delete this, or burn down Linus' house because I have
blasphemed the holy FreeBSD. I'd love to see a genuine discussion with
examples from both sides comparing the stability of *modern* FreeBSD
and Linux machines running on x86 hardware. -dans

3/14 I'm thinking about getting a new laptop. I don't want to buy a Dell
because I'm not a Republican supporter and I don't want to buy a Mac
because my work involves Linux development/VMWare. What are other
        alternatives I have? Thanks.
\_ If it's for work, why not expense it to your company and get the
most expensive Sony Viao you can get?

1/13 Can ordinary people still change the world with ingenious inventions
and patents (like Edison and light bulb) (or at least make themselves
rich) or is this now completely in the hands of large corp with
crackpots making noise on the side? This is a serious question, not
        a troll about bad patents.

1/5 So who else thinks that Linux Kernel Development has gone haywire?
WTF is up with this movement from an 8k to a 4k stack in the kernel
that breaks tons of existing drivers that are ported over from
Windows? And wtf is this crap doing on production distros like
Fedora? Don't they realize that if you're going to have a large
install base that you can't arbitrarily do crap like that anymore?
