ruled on Wednesday that Chinese-South Africans will be reclassified as "black," a term that includes black Africans, Indians and others who were subject to discrimination under apartheid. As a result of this ruling, ethnically Chinese citizens will be able to benefit from government affirmative action policies aimed at undoing the effects of apartheid. In 2006, the Chinese Association of South Africa sued the government, claiming that its members were being discriminated against because they were being treated as whites and thus failed to qualify for business contracts and job promotions reserved for victims of apartheid. The association successfully argued that, since Chinese-South Africans had been treated unequally under apartheid, they should be reclassified in order to redress wrongs of the past. jpg Jacob Zuma, President of the African National Congress, with Hu Jintao in Beijing last week (Reuters) This is not the first time the classification of Chinese in South Africa has changed. In fact, the racial status of Chinese-South Africans has often shifted with the nation's political climate and its international relations. The first significant group of Chinese came to South Africa in the early 20th century, before a formal system of apartheid existed, to work in the gold mines. Those who remained struggled with racism and lived in separate communities based on language, culture and socio-economic status. As apartheid became enshrined in law with the ascendancy of the Afrikaner government in the late 1940s, the Chinese were classified as "colored," forced to live apart from whites, and were denied educational and business opportunities along with the right to vote. But after South Africa established an economic alliance with Taiwan in the 1970s, Taiwanese immigrants were welcomed as "honorary whites," and other Chinese in South Africa began to be treated more like whites. Although they never attained the formal "honorary white" status of Taiwanese, Koreans and Japanese in South Africa and couldn't vote, Chinese-South Africans were no longer required to use segregated facilities, and in the early 1980s they were exempted from some of the discriminatory laws that applied to other non-whites. After apartheid ended in the early 1990s, the legal status of Chinese has remained in a gray area, though they've generally been lumped together with whites and denied the post-apartheid benefits available to other non-white groups. South Africa has seen waves of immigrants and investment from China since 1994, and today there are as many as 300,000 Chinese living in the South Africa. But the new court decision is unlikely to benefit most of them or trigger another mass migration- it applies only to those Chinese who were South African citizens before 1994 (and their descendants), a much smaller number of around 10,000 to 12,000. Afica has no right to be racist against the whites just because of the slavery ordeal. Infact the stronger tribes take people from the weaker tribes and make them slaves. So if thats the reason why whites are disciminated against then the people in South Africa are being hypocrits! A social construction or social construct is any phenomenon "invented" or "constructed" by participants in a culture or society, existing because people agree to behave as if it exists or follow certain conventional rules. Please read "The Social Construction of Reality" a book by "peter L Berger and Thomas Luckmann (1966). John 8:32 -And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. but what really gets me is that you are not even secure in yourself enough to use your real name. this has nothing to do with you unless you live in South Africa and if you did you would know the history behind why this was put in place. everyone, black white, jamaican, chinese, spanish, are having identity issues. its sad, but its not our fault, only working together and forgiveness will heal the wounds. all this stems from mental slavery that everyone is under, rather it's really happening or not, WE HAVE CONTROL OVER IT NOW! just like people classify all people of darker skin as black when last time i checked alot of us are brown and not every black person is from africa, alot of brazillians who are black and dominicans do not like to be called black or african. Imagine you are in a very bad car accident and you are paralized so 40 years you are still reminded of that car accident. It was just for a legal reason they are still Chinese but classified as a minority black so they can have access to certain things. No You didnt do anything wrong by being born of Caucasion race. If you look around yourself (if only you can get over your overinflated ego) you will realize that we have vastly added worth to our adopted country. Also, because India is boming you are weepind over paying a couple of bucks extra. It was the system of disenfranchisement and discrimination that made black South Africans available for affirmative action. I can't believe there's actually an issue with that-sorry, people, you're unfortunately paying for your fathers' mistakes. Be understandably bitter, but be a little understanding. The chinese or any other race that is not black could never truly know what it is like to be black, they lack the experience and pigmentation. Of course i do agree that the racism against them is and was wrong but that is no reason to say that they are "black" because they have experienced discrimination, that is only a fourth of what actual blacks, african or african-american, have experienced and are still experiencing. Although BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL and continuosly hated on,like in the comment, there is no physical way, unless they are born mixed or interracial, that the chinese could be black and it will probably not be accepted by the people of South Africa. I don't know what it is like to be any other race than what I am, I do not understand what muslims, jews, or mexicans experience because I belong to a different ethnicity than they do and the lifestyles are all completely different although we are all of the human race, we are not all of the same ethnic race, so I don't think it is right for an entire race to be considered anything more or less than who or what they are, but they should not be treated any differently because of it. There are others ways to solve racism, if it was that easy, what was the purpose of the civil war, blacks should have just become white people, but it's not that simple, the labeling of someone "white" or "black" does not change the person, the person's life or their color. Basically meaning someone had a racial epiphany that makes no sense to me. But back to the point, how are whites being discriminated against in this instance? I doubt they're really going to get much from this reclassification. The Chinese government is entering into arrangements with every African country that has valuable natural resources by negotiating to buy all of the resource and providing somewhat generous terms. This is yet another great example of the growing Chinese influence on the African continent. It will allow the Chinese greater access to South African opportunities. Basically, all minorities went through this so its not just the Africans. If you would've read and comprehended you would've had the correct reason for this story being read. No, its not right to discrimnate against white people still, "minorities" had to live years of being segregated and shunned against for the color of their skin. The reason for this story is that since Asians were disriminated against, then later change and received the same right as whites. Then when apartheid ended, their rights were taken away. If your grandparents or whoever (someone other than you) was the victim of racial injustice, then that doesn't entitle you to anything, and it doesn't give you grounds to discriminate against people who did nothing wrong just because of what some members of their race (who may or may not even be related to these individuals)did. then the entire country will be black } answers it best. Because these black chinese aren't recognising with the black identity...
