5/26 "Energy fears looming, new survivalists prepare" (AP) : Yahoo! Green:
        http://www.csua.org/u/lnp
\_ Speaking of protection, I'm thinking of getting a 9mm handgun.
What is a good brand to buy? Is HK worth the extra $500 over
American brand 9mm guns? I really like German guns but wonder
why they cost a lot more.
\_ If you are getting it for protection it doesn't matter. If
you are getting it as a fetishtic totem to ward off the
boogey man and make up for your pathetic sex life, then by
all means get the best money can buy.
\_ Oh and here's a hint: you aren't getting it for protection.
\_ The only time I really wished I had a gun was when we were
hiking in the middle of nowhere and there were a bunch of
gangster looking people who kept looking at us and pointing
as if they wanted to rape the girls and kill the guys or
something. They could have easily done so if they wanted to.
Other than that, there's never been a time where
           I wished I had a gun.
\_ What were gangsters doing hiking? Some sort of training
              exercise?
\_ The hell I know, the were burning stinky plant things
                 and shouting and screaming
\_ I only dream about having a gun when people double park
their giant automobile in the middle of Gough.
\_ Is it for home defence or sport shooting? If it is for home
              defence, consider a shotgun instead.
\_ There's a pistol which can chamber .410 shotgun shells.
What do you think of that as a home defense weapon?
\_ That's the Taurus Judge. It looks ideal, but on that
platform the recoil must be horrendous.
\_ I think having the shotgun look is also useful for
                      stopping intruders.
\_ Yes, and the sound of a pump action is instantly
recognizable. You can also load it with birdshot,
which won't go through 2 layers of drywall. The only
drawback is that the long barrel can be difficult to
manage in hallways. Hence the above-mentioned Judge.
                         \_ Oh boy! Sleep! That's when I'm a Viking!
                         \_ Oh boy! Sleep! That's where I'm a Viking!
                            \_ ???
\_ The insinuation appears to be that someone
                                  here is delusional.
\_ Living a rich fantasy life, please.
\_ You have to try holding them to see if they fit your hand, etc.
My first handgun is a Beretta 92FS. I'm going to get the Beretta
PX4 Storm for regular carry (it's about half a pound lighter, and
the barrel is 1" shorter). I hate the feel of Glock, though a
lot of people swear by them. Springfield XD is a good choice as
well. S&W has put out their M&P line, but they're new enough
that they have some of the annoying CA features (mag disconnect).
              \_ http://www.gun-review.com/reviews/ratingDisplay.php?reviewId=379&cat=1
\_ What do you mean by "regular carry"? I thought California's
ban on concealed weapon (handgun under your coat) makes
legalized handgun ownership less appealing than say,
                 other gun loving states.
\_ Not only that, but why would you want to wear a coat? It's
                    hot out.
\_ I have a concealed carry permit. I carry under an
untucked shirt. I can carry legally nearly anywhere in
                       CA.
\_ so are you like, waiting for the 0.0001% chance
that some nutso starts shooting people randomly
and you come into the picture and save everyone
and become the hero of the day?
\_ No, I think the nutjobs need to be outnumbered by
                             non-nutjobs with guns. -pp
\_ My wife wears a lot of jewelry and we have
to go to some bad neighborhoods to collect rent.
You do not know me. Do NOT anger me!
\_ Ah this makes a lot of sense. I'd probably
do the same in your shoes. I guess my life
is a bit overly sheltered. -pp
\_ I have not shot anyone (yet) but I have
had to draw on several delinquent renters
and a neighbor to whom I foolishly lent
money. By the way, I am ambidextrous,
so I can shoot with either or both hands.
Does andybody know if a concealed carry
Does andbody know if a concealed carry
Does anybody know if a concealed carry
permit allows me to carry two guns?
\_ Unit III is a lot more dangerous than I remember.
\_ Unit III is a lot more dangerous than I
                                      remember.
\_ You obviously don't have a CCW. CA
allows up to 4 weapons on a permit.
\_ Your wife should not be wearing jewelry
in rough neighborhoods (duh). Are you
brandishing a firearm in an attempt to
collect a debt? If so, you are breaking
                                      multiple laws, not just one.
\_ She has a right to wear jewelry
any where she wants. Why should
                                         she abridge her jewelry wearing
                                         right just because of violent
poor people? Are you even American?
Should I change out of my Rolex
before going to collect the rent?
\_ well since I am American, and

Law's pretty complicated in California. It varies from
county to county, so even if you can carry it in one
city, you cannot carry it in another city. This pretty
much renders gun ownership useless unless you're willing
to break CA laws from one county to another. Better to
                    get a taser. Safer, easier.
\_ Completely false. A CCW permit is issued on a county
basis, but allows you to carry *anywhere* in the state.
\_ I think BART or AC Transit gets mad if you carry,
no matter what your permit says.
                       - ccw holder
\_ The trick is getting a CCW permit in a city
                          that is anti-gun.

Looks like S Cal residents are more gun-ho about CCW
\_ Hey, how do you like it (92FS)? I've found that it has a
tendency to jam and I find its lack of rails annoying 'cause
                 I can't mount a laser sight.
                 \_ I love the 92. I've never had a jam, and I've put about
4-5k rounds through it. I always clean it after a shooting
session. It's a bit heavy for daily carry.
\_ What sort of ammo do you use? I always clean mine,
too. Did you have any problems with the first few
hundred rounds? To be fair, it was outdoors and
blowing sandy grit when I was getting the jams.
\_ I use all FMJ or JHP.
                \_ I bought a Ruger today! -op
\_ I bought a Ruger and a Glock today! -op
\_ Now I would like to get another gun for my car.
Any recommendations? I am considering the Remington870P.
Any recommendations? I was considering a tactical

Convinced that the planet's oil supply is dwindling and the world's economies are heading for a crash, people around the country are moving onto homesteads, learning to live off their land, conserving fuel and, in some cases, stocking up on guns they expect to use to defend themselves and their supplies from desperate crowds of people who didn't prepare. That was before Breault heard an author talk about the bleak future of the world's oil supply. Now, she's preparing for the world as we know it to disappear. She switched to a diet of locally grown foods near her upstate New York home and lost 70 pounds. She sliced up her credit cards, banished her television and swore off plane travel. "I was panic-stricken," the 50-year-old recalled, her voice shaking. Convinced the planet's oil supply is dwindling and the world's economies are heading for a crash, some people around the country are moving onto homesteads, learning to live off their land, conserving fuel and, in some cases, stocking up on guns they expect to use to defend themselves and their supplies from desperate crowds of people who didn't prepare. The exact number of people taking such steps is impossible to determine, but anecdotal evidence suggests that the movement has been gaining momentum in the last few years. These energy survivalists are not leading some sort of green revolution meant to save the planet. Many of them believe it is too late for that, seeing signs in soaring fuel and food prices and a faltering US economy, and are largely focused on saving themselves. Some are doing it quietly, giving few details of their preparations -- afraid that revealing such information as the location of their supplies will endanger themselves and their loved ones. They envision a future in which the nation's cities will be filled with hungry, desperate refugees forced to go looking for food, shelter and water. "There's going to be things that happen when people can't get things that they need for themselves and their families," said Lynn-Marie, who believes cities could see a rise in violence as early as 2012. Lynn-Marie asked to be identified by her first name to protect her homestead in rural western Idaho. Many of these survivalists declined to speak to The Associated Press for similar reasons. These survivalists believe in "peak oil," the idea that world oil production is set to hit a high point and then decline. Scientists who support idea say the amount of oil produced in the world each year has already or will soon begin a downward slide, even amid increased demand. But many scientists say such a scenario will be avoided as other sources of energy come in to fill the void. com Web site, where upward of 800 people gathered on recent evenings, believers engage in a debate about what kind of world awaits. Some members argue there will be no financial crash, but a slow slide into harder times. Some believe the federal government will respond to the loss of energy security with a clampdown on personal freedoms. Others simply don't trust that the government can maintain basic services in the face of an energy crisis. The powers that be, they've determined, will be largely powerless to stop what is to come. Determined to guard themselves from potentially harsh times ahead, Lynn-Marie and her husband have already planted an orchard of about 40 trees and built a greenhouse on their 7 1/2 acres. They've begun to raise chickens and pigs, and they've learned to slaughter them. The couple have gotten rid of their TV and instead have been reading dusty old books published in their grandparents' era, books that explain the simpler lifestyle they are trying to revive. Her husband, concerned about one day being unable to get medications, has been training to become an herbalist. By 2012, they expect to power their property with solar panels, and produce their own meat, milk and vegetables. When things start to fall apart, they expect their children and grandchildren will come back home and help them work the land. She envisions a day when the family may have to decide whether to turn needy people away from their door. "I decided there was nothing like getting the training myself to deal with insurrections, if that's a possibility," said the former executive recruiter. Laskowski is taking steps similar to environmentalists: conserving fuel, consuming less, studying global warming, and relying on local produce and craftsmen. Laskowski is powering his home with solar panels and is raising fish, geese, ducks and sheep. He has planted apple and pear trees and is growing lettuce, spinach and corn. Whenever possible, he uses his bicycle to get into town. "If there is a disruption in the oil supply it will be very quickly elevated into a disaster." Breault said she hopes to someday band together with her neighbors to form a self-sufficient community. Women will always be having babies, she notes, and she imagines her skills as a midwife will always be in demand. For now, she is readying for the more immediate work ahead: There's a root cellar to dig, fruit trees and vegetable plots to plant. She has put a bicycle on layaway, and soon she'll be able to bike to visit her grandkids even if there is no oil at the pump. Whatever the shape of things yet to come, she said, she's done what she can to prepare. Rate this Firearm gun reviews gun reviews operation: Semi-Auto caliber: 40 S&W capacity: 12 barrel Length: 401" - 5" price: $500 - $600 gun reviews Went shopping for a different more expensive pistol and ended up buying this one. Mine is a PX-4 Storm) gun reviews I get bored shooting at only 25 yd targets. Being in AZ one can go out to the desert for an afternoon of plinking quite readily. Anyway, I routinely shoot out to 75+ yds with my pistols for fun. It cuts back recoil to almost 9mm levels and muzzle flip is less than my S&W 659 9mm. Accuracy being key, the PX-4 is the most accurate of my stock pistols. I can easily hit a man sized target consistently at more than 75 yds with 165 flat noses (WalMart Winchesters). Yes, I am aware of inertia bleed-off at that range, but it is still fun and good for one to know what they can do with any given weapon. I\'ve put 700 rds through it and only had two slow feeds. Yet, I am fairly sure this was my fault due to leaving too much oil in the breech. gun reviews The 3 way adjustable grip stocks are nice but the sides of the mag well are still flat. They DO help, but are not the final answer in this area of pistol design.

some states restrict the weapon to a single handgun, whereas others permit multiple handguns or even martial arts weapons to be carried. CCW is a more generalized form of what some states call a concealed handgun license (CHL). In 13 states, the same permit or license is required to open-carry a handgun, but most states do not require a permit or license to carry openly; in six states, even with concealed-carry licenses or permits, open-carry is wholly prohibited. Vermont extends the right to carry without requiring a permit to non-residents as well as to residents, but issues no permits to residents that could function to allow reciprocal concealed carry rights for Vermont residents while in other states. There are currently movements in each of these states to pass concealed-carry laws. Legislation was passed in 2004 and again in 2005 but vetoed by the respective governors. Reciprocal recognition of concealed-carry privileges and rights vary state-to-state, are negotiated between individual states, and sometimes additionally depend on the residency status of the license holder, even when holding a permit or license. Presently, a license or permit from most states, held by a resident of that state, is recognized in approximately 30 other states. In contrast, a license or permit from most states, held by a non-resident of that state, is recognized in slightly fewer than 30 other states at present. A licensee residing in one state may be able to carry or transport a weapon concealed in another state provided there is a reciprocity agreement between the two states. A licensee is considered to have constructive knowledge of the law as it applies (that is, courts will presume the licensee knows the law within the reciprocal state). Legislation, case-law, and interpretation thereof by law enforcement agencies change rapidly and frequently in this area of law, and online sources may not be reliable or up-to-date. Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act, 18 US Code 926B and 926C. This federal law allows two classes of persons -- the "qualified law enforcement officer" and the "qualified retired law enforcement officer" -- to carry a concealed firearm in any jurisdiction in the United States, regardless of any state or local law to the contrary, with certain exceptions. edit Training Recognizing the responsibility associated in concealed-carrying a firearm, some states require concealed carry applicants to participate in a training course. Most courses have a classroom and range component, often being completed in one to two days. deadly force must be a matter of last resort, when life or limb is endangered, when escape or retreat are foreclosed, and warnings are given but ignored. During the range portion of the course the applicant typically learns and demonstrates safe handling of a firearm, how to safely operate the handgun, and accurate shooting from common self-defense distances. Most states require a certain proficiency to receive a passing grade. Some states recognize the safety and use-of-force training given to military personnel as acceptable. edit Legal Liability Liability is present where the licensee brandishes the weapon, threatens use, or exacerbates a volatile situation, or when the licensee is carrying while intoxicated. Less common is unregulated, legal concealed carry such as in Vermont and Alaska. Furthermore, minimum age requirements of 18 or 21 years are typical. Even in localities where concealed carrying is permitted, there may be legal restrictions on where a person may carry a concealed weapon. In many states, a law-abiding permit holder may not carry in any establishment licensed to dispense alcohol for on-premises consumption. Further restrictions may be placed on what kind of guns may be carried and how many a person may carry at one time. First Amendment: "The Supreme Court held in Lamont v Postmaster General (1965) that the First Amendment prevents the government from registering purchasers of magazines and newspapers -- even if such material is "communist political propaganda." edit Research into the effects of concealed carry laws on crime There have been many studies published in academic journals regarding the effects of various concealed carry laws on crime rate. Academics have also taken the debate outside of journals, writing books, blogs, and having debates on the subject. The effect of various concealed carry laws are the subject of past and present research. John Lott's analysis of crime report data has shown some statistically significant effects of concealed carry laws. One major conclusion was that locations which enacted more permissive concealed carry laws had a decrease in violent crime but an increase in property crime.
