4/10 Why do people (myself included) like watching movies or TV series, or reading novels? Why are humans so fascinated about stories that they consciously know are not real? Do other animals exhibit such behavior? \_ http://youtube.com/watch?v=_LHoyB81LnE \_ That is FUCKING AMAZING \_ It is amazing. I think it's partially trained behavior, but still, the elephant almost certainly has a conceptual understanding of what it's doing. There's also a good amount of data on drawing/painting in great ape species. Elephants, great apes and dolphins can self-recognize in mirrors and presumably on TV and in movies. I remember a nature show on Koko the gorilla where she was reacting to videos of male gorillas when they were looking for a mate for her. In most ways, gorillas and chimps have at least the cognitive ability of a small human child, and they could probably enjoy the chimp equivalent of Teletubbies. -tom \_ This is a hoax, pure and simple. \_ It's not a hoax. http://www.snopes.com/photos/animals/elephantpainting.asp -tom \_ How many elephants did they have to TORTURE to teach them these tricks? This is BARBARIC. Animals should roam wild, free, and happy. ANIMAL TORTURE. FREE THE ELEPHANTS!!!!! \_ Until I see a video of the elephant doing this without a person (not a zoom that only shows the end of the trunk) it's a hoax. \_ http://youtube.com/results?search_query=elephant+painting&search_type= \_ until you stop being an idiot, you're an idiot. \_ Dang it, he draws a better elephant than I do! \_ Maybe the elephant is tracing out some faint shape on the paper which the audiance can't see from far away. But even if so, it's still amazing. \_ Why do people like to get drunk or take drugs or play video games for hours on end? Probably for the same reason: to escape from their mostly unhappy lives. mostly unhappy lives. --wkahan@cs.berkeley.edu \_ I guess that's the reason. -- OP \_ Why do people like to do anything at all? |

Elephant Paints Self Portrait Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player. Good comment Marked as spam Reply I'm sure that there was plenty of training involved but regardless, this is still amazing. It truly does show that animals aren't as mindless as we think they are. |
www.snopes.com/photos/animals/elephantpainting.asp Origins: The above-linked video is "true" in the sense that it represents the real phenomenon of elephants who have learned to paint -- with the caveats that "painting" in this sense means the animals outline and color specific drawings they've been taught to replicate (rather than abstractly making free-form portraits of whatever tickles their pachydermic fancies at the moment), they work under the direction of trainers, they don't all exhibit the same level of proficiency, and the quality of their output can be highly variable. A BBC News article described an exhibition of such paintings at an Edinburgh gallery in 1996: Pictures which were painted by elephants have gone on display at an Edinburgh gallery. I2 Victoria Khunapramot, 26, has brought the paintings from Thailand to the Dundas Gallery on Dundas Street. They include "self-portraits" by Paya, who is said to be the only elephant to have mastered his own likeness. Paya is one of six elephants whose keepers have taught them how to hold a paintbrush in their trunks. Mrs Khunapramot, from Newington, said: "Many people cannot believe that an elephant is capable of producing any kind of artwork, never mind a self-portrait. "But they are very intelligent animals and create the entire paintings with great gusto and concentration within just five or 10 minutes -- the only thing they cannot do on their own is pick up a paintbrush, so it gets handed to them. "They are trained by artists who fine-tune their skills, and they paint in front of an audience in their conservation village, leaving no one in any doubt that they are authentic elephant creations." Mrs Khunapramot, who set up the Thai Fine Art company after studying the history of art in St Andrews and business management at Edinburgh's Napier University, said it took about a month to train the animals to paint. video gallery that features several clips of pachyderm artists in action similar to the one linked above, as well as galleries displaying the individual elephants' works. asp Urban Legends Reference Pages 1995-2008 by Barbara and David P Mikkelson This material may not be reproduced without permission.
