Elisabeth Bumiller SAN ANTONIO -- Senator John McCain got support on Wednesday from an important corner of evangelical Texas when the pastor of a San Antonio mega-church, Rev. Mr Hagee, who argues that the United States must join Israel in a preemptive, biblically prophesized military strike against Iran that will lead to the second coming of Christ, praised Mr McCain for his pro-Israel views. "John McCain has publicly stated his support of the state of Israel, pledging that his administration will not permit Iran to have nuclear weapons to fulfill the evil dreams of President Ahmadinejad to wipe Israel off the map,'' Mr Hagee said at a news conference at the Omni Hotel in San Antonio. "They are a democracy in the Middle East that deserves the support of America and Christian people everywhere,'' Mr Hagee said.
I wish these rock star mega-church pastors would not blur the lines between tax free churches and the public political debate. When they explain their choices in part because of scripture prophesy I would think they might be skating on thin ice.
Hopefully he will renounce this war-mongering zealot like Obama did with Farrakahn. Or is it okay to have the support of a someone who wants to start a war based on ethnicity as long as they share your religion?
Given that this endorsement is more likely to provide a marginal boost to Obama, in that moderates will be scared away, I support the great reverend's decision wholeheartedly.
He only knows war and foreign policy which will not give us food on the table and treatment when we become ill. What substances he talks about other than staying 100 years in Iraq. Does anyone have any clue that every month we are spending about 10-15 billion dollars to Iraq war and empting out our domestic economy? Are people like McCain supporters are crazy that they become blindfold and they are not seeing the difference? Are they are so dumb that they want to repeat last 8 years of Bush legacy? John McCain is a war monger and he likes t stay in Iraq for 50 to 100 years and hoping for more wars to come at the expense of our brave soldiers and our national treasures.
Is not that failed policy on health care we had for decades? It is shame that our health care system ranks 37th in the world. So what's the good of being the wealthiest and strongest nation on earth? McCain can enjoy the federal health care plan for himself with out a word but when time to share the same plan with American people then it becomes a bad policy. Recently John McCain said that "we have the best health care system in the world", this may be true statements for him because some privileged like him can have the access to it. What happens to millions of Americans when they are out of reach of this so called best health care because either the premium is too high or the insurance company is denying the health coverage for the pre-existing conditions? What is McCain's position to fix this problem which has crippled our access to health care system?
We are sending some one who has no knowledge about struggled economy and who will promote our country by military and foreign policy. We should not forget that our investment on decades of old foreign policy is one of the main reasons for all this mess for many years. We are abandoning our domestics' agendas over our greed to foreign occupation and we are empting out our national resources to preserve other nation's interest. McCain is a big part of our failed foreign policy and all their disaster happened due to that is part of his problem.
I must say that I disagree with Pastor Hagee (my pastor by the way) based on the voting record of McCain in the past seven years. Let's not forget that McCain is most definitely not a conservative, nor does he represent conservative values. I will be writing in Fred Thompson if McCain is the nominee. Even though Thompson will not win, I must vote my conscience and can not compromise my views.
Well, here it is again, another preemptive strike against a country that is about to "attack" America. This will then lead us into the second coming of Christ. I wish that all these Christians that want to kill thousands of innocent men, women and children would conside committing suicide first.
" (Paragragh 1) "Mr Hagee, the pastor of the Cornerstone Church, said that his support for Israel had nothing to do with prophetic scenarios, but rather because he felt the cause was just. They are a democracy in the Middle East that deserves the support of America and Christian people everywhere,' Mr Hagee said." Is the author claiming that the pastor says one thing and believes another or that he is claiming both thinggs.
I agree with you 100%, and I like to see billions more agreeing with you. It is people like Mr Hagee that spreads the poison of hate. World would be a much better place if people like him were thrown in jail for inciting violence.
These Conservatives need to get their Separation of Church and State story straight. You get tax exemption if you are a church and don't enter into politics. Hagee wants to influence politics but not give up his tax exemption.
First off let me take issue with "pha" and comment number 28 insinuating that the Republican Party has been the lap-dogs for Evangelicals. The truth is, its the other way around, Evengelicals have been lap-dogs for the Republican Party. We've been reduced to two issues, abprtion and gay-marriage. Now we're supposed to think that if we spend out money on ourselves instead of giving it directly to the poor it will stimulate the economy and provide the poor with better and higher paying jobs. In all my study, the US and Iran are not mentioned in Biblical prophecy. We can do NOTHING to usher in Armegedon so we need not bother.
Maybe, the pastor and John McCain should take another stroll down the streets of Baghdad without flak jackets, hundreds of heavily armed troops, and helicopters overhead?
Does that fat little preacher have any children in the military? How dare that fat rascal try to committ my brothers in arms to engage in another war to fullfill a prophesy. There is a reason for seperation of church and state, and this is it. Hagee is just a fat little fart who has no clue, as usual. In 2004, he and his kind convinced thounsands of weak minded christians to side with George Bush. Because this idiot actually believed Bush, a President, could or would do anything about gay marriage, which is an issue managed by the state.
What do we need to do to show that HRC is amazing in her quest to help us? How do we get past this hoopla of their press coverage on the issues that matter. Like, I am a part time worker, but need health insurance, now.
At least they had the argument that Obama was invited to speak about his personal faith journey as a public figure, and wasn't officially a political endorsement ala Hagee.
NYT is not afraid to dig under the top soil in order to bring out the truths the lie beneath. McCain being endorsed by Hagee is like a criminal having Charley Manson as his key defense witness. McCain will continue to pander support and will probably end up being born again on his path to Washington.
He has no serious baggage from years in dc I believe he represents the america i miss, the one I grew up in. America has never been perfect but with all it's faults it is still the greatest society, people and system of government the world has ever seen in it's entire history-bar none! I believe the "change" America needs the most is to change back to the better aspects of the America that I remember.
Hagee is not a war monger, he is simply stating what the bible says is going to happen. Hucabee might be a better candidate but it is very plain to see that he is not going to get the nomination. So why should Hagee waste time giving Hucabee his endorsement. At this point in Hucabee should drop out and give McCain his support also.
Macain we have a country to pull out of recession, i am sure that can't...
