MAP Decrease font Decrease font Enlarge font Enlarge font (CNN) -- Police took into custody a man they say walked into Sen. Hillary Clinton's campaign office in Rochester, New Hampshire, and took several people hostage Friday. jpg Police take the hostage taker into custody Friday evening. The man, Lee Eisenberg, claimed to have a bomb strapped to his chest, police said. After the hostage situation, Clinton, who was in Washington, said "I am very grateful that this difficult day has ended so well." The situation began when Eisenberg walked into the office at about 1 pm, Maj Michael Hambrook of the New Hampshire State Police told CNN affiliate WMUR-TV. Watch police take up positions On Friday afternoon, one of the hostages contacted the CNN Washington bureau and then put Eisenberg on the phone. The hostage and Eisenberg called CNN multiple times throughout the afternoon and talked to CNN staffers. Eisenberg said he had mental problems and couldn't get anyone to help him. CNN chose not to report Eisenberg's calls to avoid compromising the safety of the hostages. Shortly before 2 pm, police officers were gathered across the street from the office, some kneeling behind police cruisers with guns drawn. Man claims to have bomb A woman with a baby was released by the hostage-taker early on, she told a witness, Lettie Tzizik, who spoke to WMUR "A young woman with a 6-month or 8-month-old infant came rushing into the store just in tears, and she said, 'You need to call 911. A man has just walked into the Clinton office, opened his coat and showed us a bomb strapped to his chest with duct tape,' " the Web site reported. Bill Shaheen, chairman of Clinton's New Hampshire campaign, told WMUR the people held were volunteers. Clinton, a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, is in the Washington area. She was scheduled to speak at 3 pm at a Democratic National Committee event, but canceled the talk because of the situation, DNC Chairman Howard Dean said. Watch Dean break the news "Unfortunately as some of you know, there is a hostage situation in New Hampshire involving a Clinton campaign staff person," Dean told those who had gathered for the event. "The details are sketchy at this time, but understandably Sen. Clinton is now dealing with this very difficult problem and she is not going to be able to join us today. And we will keep them in our prayers and hope for a resolution to this situation in New Hampshire." advertisement Buildings close to the storefront campaign office on Main Street were evacuated, including local campaign centers for Clinton's Democratic presidential rivals, Sen. Cassandra Hamilton, who works in an office adjacent to the Clinton office, told WMUR: "I walked out and I immediately started running, and I saw that the road was blocked off.

Share November 30, 2007 2:09 PM A suspect was arrested at a Hillary Clinton campaign office in Rochester, NH, hours after he allegedly claimed he had a bomb strapped to his body and took several hostages, then apparently released them. He is a well-known local man with a history of emotional issues who allegedly told his son to "watch the news," a well-placed law enforcement source told ABC News' Pierre Thomas. The man with the apparent pipe bomb asked to speak to Clinton, a source added. After the arrest, Clinton said she was "very grateful" the emergency ended with her campaign staff safe. Clinton was not at the New Hampshire office during the emergency. Amid the hostage situation, she canceled a scheduled appearance at a Democratic National Committee meeting in Northern Virginia outside of Washington, DC, DNC Chairman Howard Dean said, because of "a hostage situation involving a Clinton staffer." New Hampshire Democratic Party Chairman Ray Buckley was already at the DNC meeting in Virginia, and remained there in the early stages of the New Hampshire emergency. He listened to a live Web stream by ABC News affiliate WMUR, but was not immediately in touch with colleagues on the ground in Rochester. Amid the emergency at the Clinton office, rival campaign offices nearby -- for Sen. At Clinton's Senate office on Capitol Hill in Washington, staff closed and locked the doors. The main door at her office, as with most senators' doors, is usually propped open during business hours. But this afternoon there was a uniformed Capitol Police officer stationed outside the door. ABC News' Pierre Thomas, Jack Date, Michael Bicks, Jason Ryan, David Wright, Sunlen Miller, Zachary Wolf and Michael S James contributed to this report. Alleged Hostage Taker Arrested at Clinton Office: User Comments Hitlary, the Clinton News Network, and the rest of the looney left will try to find away to label this guy a Republican. Hillary most likely already has her hired detectives working on this guy, digging out the past, finding just one hint of evidence to paint this guy as a typical Republican. Posted by: hillaryhasafatass | Nov 30, 2007 7:13:31 PM Wow, the demented Clinton-haters are really out in force on this one! Dollars to donuts that the hostage-taker is some right-wing loony driven over the edge by a steady diet of Rush Limbaugh and the Faux Noise channel. Posted by: dartagnan | Nov 30, 2007 7:08:18 PM The man seems unhinged obviously, however, no one was hurt. As for a history of mental illness, the media should have used another example than his protest about police going into private citizens cars because they were unlocked and they were concerned. And, obviously the man was right, because the police stopped the campaign.
