I weep for you. \_ Good news for those that usually don't use the affected on-ramp. \_ My wife and her co-workers take BART, and they live in Fremont and Newark. \_ Time for another tax cut! |

The block of First between Mission and Howard streets - a major approach to the bridge for commuters heading to the East Bay- was shut down around 1:30 pm City workers are diverting traffic around the block. Traffic immediately backed up near the shutdown, though buses were allowed through. The street is not expected to reopen to cars until Friday morning. Officials said the collapse occurred at a spot where city Public Utilities Commission workers have been installing an 8-inch-wide pipe that will connect the main water line to a new building on Howard Street. PUC assistant general manager Michael Carlin said crews dug up part of the street Wednesday night to do the work. The new pipeline broke apart this afternoon for an unknown reason as workers were filling in the hole with dirt, he said. The gushing water caused an even larger section of the street to collapse, Carlin said. The collapse also knocked out water to an office building on the southwest corner of Mission and First and another on the northwest corner of Howard and First. |
