I'll sign it and we can talk about anything that interests you. On a global scale we are seeing America losing it's competitiveness in engineering and technical skills. All the profits from this sale will be donated to the IEEE lab at UC Berkeley for education and equipment.
Dear Woz: I like the basic idea - donating a car for a good cause, but frankly knowing something about computing labs at universities generally and some more specifics about Berkeley's, as a whole these fellows (who are excellent btw) are not exactly hurting for funds. If anything they seem to have a nice consistent flow from NSF, DARPA, etc. And in general, CS/EE departments at major research universities aren't really hurting for funds for students, for equipments (or faculty salaries for that matter). If anything the big challenge is RECRUITING decent students, not finding the filthy lucre to fund them. How about using it for minority/women in computational sciences scholarships? Or run a scholarship competition across the country, etc. I know it isn't a huge amount of money, but won't this just allow some faculty to use your cash for whatever, then use their grant funds for 1 more month summer salary or something? If you'd like to speak with the IEEE president that could be arranged.
But my 14 year old minimum wage job wouldn't be able to provide me with enough money for the car until I worked for 8 hours a day, 7 days a week for 1785 days...
What if I don't want to buy a car to have lunch with you someday? I just reduced the sale price and will make up the difference myself. Spread the word, this is going to really improve the working conditions of the computer science lab.
Woz, that thing at least better be twin turbo charged with every last aftermarket upgrade known to man and laying down over 800hp. If it's factory, sorry but your name isn't worth an additional $65,000-$70,000. Keep in mind, we are raising $100,000 for education and engineering equipment at UC Berkeley University. The car and my time are side perks and a personal donation I have made. If you'd like to buy the car and have lunch, you don't necessarily have to spend $100,000, try leaving an offer for $28,000. This is a fund raising event that is tax deductible and of significant importance to the engineering and computer community.
Hi WOZ- as a long time Z Car fun, your old ad has always been one of my favorites! Glad to see that you're still in to Z Cars, and I think your charity work is admirable. However, I would caution you to be careful in how you are advertising this car- it is clear that the Z for sale is a BASE model- one can tell easily by the 17 inch wheels and steering wheel that doesn't have cruise control switches. The 2005 Anniversary Edition has larger 18inch wheels, brembo brakes, a tinted Z logo on the size, leather seats, bose radio, 35th anniversary floor mats and other features...
Would you swap it for an original Apple-II floppy disk drive, considering i have to drive it all the way back to Europe ? Good initiative btw, education all over the globe needs some $.
Eduction is so important and in this era of technology education will always need a boost. I work exclusively on Macs doing web development using web standards and producing QTVR virtual tours and here in Britain (especially England) the schools nearly all use Windows and MS products which saddens me because I realise that much of the stuff just doesn't cut it. If I were wealthy I would be spending much of my money trying to educate school head teachers that they need a more diverse software and hardware base. Thanks for setting precedence by supporting such a wonderful cause. I hope it will influence some other people with the financial power to make a difference. Also I wanted to say a big thanks to your good self and Steve Jobs for getting the ball rolling at Apple and in more recent years a big thanks to some of the newer guys like Phil Schiller and Jonathan Ive and their teams for designing and developing some really great tools for me to work on.
As an American Physics major I know first hand how we're losing our edge in the sciences and engineering, and it's great what you're doing. I think you'd also be happy to know that many in my department here at Clemson University perform their research on Macs, and myself, have used an Apple since I was 2 (Apple IIe). I wish I could buy this car, but I'm still dealing with finishing my education too. As stated, you're a real role model to a lot of people, keep it up. The best part of this auction is the lunch with Woz part, but hey if you're ever in the Clemson SC area. Good luck with supporting engineering and science fields, we're all behind you.
Woz, to buy your car and have lunch would be a great honor. I'm going put my head down and work smarter, maybe the next car you auction off I'll be able to make an offer.
