Read comments It is a conspiracy theory worthy of a Dan Brown novel. The transposed version of the Last Supper The composite version of the Last Supper, created by superimposing the original with its mirror image New claims that Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper contains a hidden image of a woman holding a child are provoking a storm of interest on the internet. The figure allegedly appears when the 15th Century mural painting is superimposed with its mirror image, and both are made partially transparent. Woman holding baby in transposed version of Last Supper The 'woman' leans across the group in Christ's direction... According to Slavisa Pesci, an Italian amateur scholar, the resulting composite picture shows a figure clutching what appears to be a young child. More cynical observers may conclude that the double-image is far too blurry and faded to draw such conclusions. Mr Pesci, who revealed his "findings" last week, chose not to speculate on who the child could be, but internet conspiracy theorists have been quick to point out similarities to the plot of the bestseller The Da Vinci Code, in which Jesus married his follower, Mary Magdelene. com - were still down this morning due to the weight of traffic. Mr Pesci also claims that the superimposed image shows a goblet in front of Jesus Christ - perhaps a depiction of his blessing of bread and wine - and transforms two of the people sitting at the table into knights. while on the other side two guests appear as knights "I came across it by accident, from some of the details you can infer that we are not talking about chance but about a precise calculation," he said. The Last Supper, one of the most famous and valuable paintings in the world, depicts the meal shortly before Christ's death when he announced to his disciples that one of them would betray him. The long-haired figure who appears as a woman in Mr Pesci's double image is Philip, the figure wearing orange, third on Christ's left in the original. The basis of The Da Vinci Code is that the feminine figure on Christ's immediate right was actually Mary Magdelene, not John as most scholars believe. Reddit Comments Now see just a short time ago, there was some other mysterious controversy about some old painting. This is just a kopy kat of whatever nonsense was being piped out a few months ago. Most people don't seem to remember this other controversy, but I do. Sorry but first of all the after-images are too blurry to see anything but besides that, the whole idea of Jesus marrying Mary Magdalene is unproven trash. My King was pure from sin and a virgin till His death Not only that but the person next to Jesus in the LAST SUPPER painting is John the apostle, not Mary Mag You have to understand one thing about Renaissance art and that is Renaissance artists like Da vinci frequently feminised the faces of some male characters from the bible and John the apostle was such a target by more than one artist. link anyone who knows how to get in contact with someone who can help me, like a reporter or something please do! There is proof on my site showing i've found this last year. If you do a search on YouTube, Yahoo or Google videos for New Da Vinci Code you will find a video that will explain the mistake and show a stunning image of Da Vinci himself in the Last Supper! Report this comment the bible says that you shall not make images or idolise. Why do people try to amke something out of nothing, somebody has just painted what he percieves what happened at tha last supper! Report this comment I don't see a Grail in the center of the new image. If the figures on the right are now knights, we are to think Da Vinci thought them important why (if they were meant to appear as such). Report this comment Zzzzzz Uhm the Da Vinci code isn't real and this could quite easily be coincidence. Without getting into the argument about the Roman churches rather obvious attempts to have complete power over the world I'd have to be one of those cynical people who say the images are so blurred they could be anything. Report this comment Steve reckons it's impossible for LDV to have imagined a mirror flipped overlay.... The mirror image will be seen at the same time as the light passing through the glass. Report this comment If you play it backwards, it says "My sweet Satan" You nerds need to realise we will NEVER find out the truth because LDV has popped his clogs and only he knew, and all the religious nutballs need a long hard think about the sheer fantasy of the story of the great sky fairy and his creation. Report this comment Arjun, you're saying Hinduism doesn't try to convert anyone, then in the same breath you say it's the "supreme religion" and that we should all learn about it and convert to it. For me this is a classic example of the hypocritical nature of all religions. Report this comment If the two superposed are indeed mirror-imaged, hence the blurred images of the various diners, why is there no corresponding blurring of the Christ figure at the centre? He is facing sideways in an asymmetric fashion and so should appear 'two-faced' if the superposition were a true representation. Report this comment I agree that 'conspiracy' theories are not worth the paper they are written on so I will not endeavour to prove or disprove any of them. I do however take affront at the 'blind faith' given to the Bible and every other religion that worships a particular God or diety. All religion is about control of the masses, the basic principle is 'be a good boy/girl' and you will rewarded with eternal happiness after your death. Those in positions of power throughout history have endeavoured to keep the masses uneducated and in fear of the consequences of ignoring the word of God. The vicar/padre/rabbi etc etc held a level of control that couldn't be questioned or voted on under any circumstances. People were encouraged to have as many offspring as they could muster in order to keep those in question poor, being poor generally kept people uneducated and so unable to question the whole 'system' of religion. If you turn your eye to the poorer nations throughout the world, religion tends to play a greater part of the average man/woman on the street. With regard to whether we can believe the words written (Bible/Koran etc) by those in positions of power, how much do you believe the words of those in positions of power now ? Report this comment What does puzzle me though is why Leonardo would have bothered (aside perhaps for his own amusement) - I mean how could anyone else have seen it? If Leonardo was trying to communicate with us (500 years later), he would have made certain that the materials used would have stood the test of time a tad more efficiently. The historical inaccuracy of the painting is irrelevant though. If he wants to communicate an idea to the audience he will use the visual references that make most sense at that time. So the essence of the his idea is contextualised in the way that he deems fit. A 15th century Milanese viewer would have related less well to the original habit of Roman dining fashion than to the then contemporary manner. Report this comment What matters is not whether Christ got married and had children but whether he was crucified or not. Christianity is based upon the crucifixion and the resurrection. Report this comment People posting here should learn about Hinduism and convert to the true supreme religion in this world. Christianity is more like a Company spreading its branches all over the world by any means. Only religion that will give you inner peace and nirvana rather than leave you arguing about a painting. Report this comment what seems to fly by most pople is that leonardo was ahead of his time. during the late renissance men like da vinci enjoyed making the mind work to find newer and unusal things within an image, since life consisted of this very theory. i feel that it is possible for a man who wrote backwards and in unusal latin writing, that he is capable of creating something like this.
