Georgia (default) Verdana Times New Roman Arial (07-05) 17:33 PDT SAN FRANCISCO -- The 16-year-old drummer of a San Francisco punk rock band was seriously injured Wednesday night when fireworks thrown by someone at Dolores Park exploded near her right hand, police said. It was the worst incident on an Independence Day night in which police throughout the region seized more than a ton of illegal fireworks and arrested scores of people for possessing or using them. It occurred shortly before 10 pm as Roisin Isner, who has played drums with the band Tinkture since 2004, and an unidentified girl watched San Francisco's fireworks display from a hill in Dolores Park in the city's Mission District. "They were just sitting there chatting, then they saw a bright flash between them and the girl started screaming," said San Francisco police Sgt. Police began canvassing the park for witnesses as paramedics tended to Roisin's hand and transported her to San Francisco General Hospital, but investigators didn't find much in the way of witnesses or evidence, Mannina said. Mannina said police have not determined, and probably cannot determine, just what was thrown at Roisin and the other girl, who was not injured. Tinkture is an all-girl three-piece punk band that was founded in 2002. Roisin didn't know how to play the drums when she joined the band in 2004 after the founding drummer was dumped, according to the band's Web site. The band has performed at some of the area's most well known clubs, including Slims, Bottom of the Hill and 924 Gilman. Illegal fireworks kept police in San Francisco and Oakland busy for much of the night, but authorities in both cities said there were fewer problems than in past years. "I would say overall it was active out there but not as bad as previous years," Oakland police Chief Wayne Tucker said. "We had a lot of calls -- a lot going on -- but no major problems." In San Francisco, there also were numerous incidents involving illegal fireworks, particularly in the Mission District, even though police shut down some streets after the official fireworks display on the Embarcadero ended. In Oakland, where all fireworks are illegal, police confiscated between 2,500 and 3,000 pounds of the devices, ranging from sparklers to professional grade rockets, cited 115 people for fireworks possession and arrested 52 people for fireworks and other offenses, police said. In addition, cops patrolling for fireworks also wrote more than 412 traffic citations and confiscated 4 kilogram of cocaine and four firearms Wednesday night, more than 80 people, according to Lt. "We took so many illegal fireworks off the street last night, it may have been the most ever," Mufarreh said. "In Oakland you could still see fireworks in the sky and hear them but we were able to respond faster than in the past." There were concerns that illegal fireworks -- which historically light up the skies above Oakland on July 4 -- would be even worse because the city had canceled its official display at Jack London Square because of construction there. "We're all a little sad that a city as big as Oakland did not have an official fireworks display," Tucker said. Tucker noted that about 100 officers who normally would have worked on crowd control in the square or downtown were out patrolling the streets Wednesday. Last year, police were so busy dispersing a rowdy crowd downtown after the official fireworks that few officers were left to police illegal pyrotechnic displays in residential neighborhoods. The only fire that caused major injuries in Oakland this Fourth of July was initially attributed to fireworks but later was determined to be a methamphetamine lab in an apartment in the 3100 block of Harrison Street. Joshua Grover, 36, was taken to the hospital after claiming to have suffered from fireworks-related burns just after midnight, police spokesman Officer Roland Holmgren said. But after police arson investigators and fire department hazardous materials team searched the area, it was determined that he actually allegedly received chemical burns from an explosion in his home methamphetamine lab. Most of the major hot spots for illegal fireworks were in East Oakland with major problems reported from Highland Hospital to the San Leandro border, including a rowdy party on East 19th Street that police broke up, Tucker said. East Oakland residents said things remained bad even though there was bigger police presence. "It was our Baghdad by the Bay -- a war zone," said Darby Brandli, who lives in the Brooklyn neighborhood east of Lake Merritt. But it was clearly quieter than last year and there seemed to be more cops." Brandli said she appreciated any progress but she noted that Oakland's illegal fireworks are visible for miles around. "We've been in the neighborhood for 30 years and the fireworks problem has gotten worse every year until this one," she said. some saw an improvement but others were kept up all night by fireworks. "It was really pretty quiet in my immediate neighborhood," said Don Link, chair of the city's Community Policing Advisory Board, who lives near the Berkeley border. "A couple years ago we had a family neighborhood who were letting off professional grade fireworks, the kind you see at the Coliseum (after A's games). But, he said, "I could hear lots of rumbling in the distance." Some of that rumbling might have been in neighborhoods near Children's Hospital Oakland or near the MacArthur BART Station. About 11:30 pm there were about 30 young men setting off rockets and firecrackers along MacArthur Boulevard. There was also a large group setting off fireworks just north and west of the hospital. "It was even worse than last year, there was scattered stuff all night," said Judi Sierra, who lives near 59th Street and Shattuck Avenue.

KLC Production's site Sorry, folks -- we've been sitting on this one because we wanted to make sure it was true . and then the Chronicle beats us to it (as they rightly should). The Chron article is unclear about what type of firework it was or who may have done it -- but there is a letter purported to come from Isner's father floating around the Internet that fills in (at least his opinions on) those details. For now, the article at least confirms that Isner was seriously injured by a stray explosive that detonated near her right hand. We were sent copies of this note purported to be from her dad by at least five readers. We warn you that we've been unable to verify that this was written by Chris Isner, so unfortunately it must at this point be taken with a grain of salt. We've written to Mr Isner, asking him to verify and for further comments. We understand that, even if on the level, he's got much weightier things to worry about than speaking to SFist. But for now, we'll reprint the letter for you in its entirety. Even if the letter isn't valid (and we're inclined at this point to think it is), the point it makes is indeed an important one: if you have any information on who may have perpetrated this crime, please contact the police immediately. Maiming a young girl -- and, indeed, inflicting an injury ending her music career -- is a sad, serious thing. July 4th, Roisin and friends were in Dolores Park watching fireworks. She will undego surgery later this morning but it doesn't look good. second and third fingers will also be permanently impaired and disfigured. People know who did it and I'm offering $20,000 for a name. okay i feel like if this were in the park then people would have seen it happen, and that even if they didnt see who actually set it off, they would've had a general idea of the direction it came from. even a little thing such as "all the people to her left saw/heard it over head" gives little clues. July 5, 2007 9:18 PM It didn't happen here in San Francisco, but 3 or so folks stepped over a woman who was lying on the floor of a convenience store stabbed and bleeding the other day - oh yeah, one person stopped to take a photo of her with his/her cell phone. You're not observing television fiction - step up and help each other out. July 6, 2007 8:04 AM i can verify it definitely happened in the park due to seeing emergency vehicles on the scene at approx. i live in the mission and had a large number of friends who were in the area at the time, it seems like more information is slowly coming out. i've heard of at least two people coming forward so far, one person has been circulating more information attached to the initial letter that has been going around describing who she thought was the suspect. multiple people must have seen who did it, its just a matter of them coming forward. July 6, 2007 8:08 AM Don't even worry, if the police manage to catch the perpetrator (and that is a big if for the SFPD), DA Kamala Harris will manage to screw up the prosecution. July 6, 2007 8:18 AM hey el, just for your information, we have 1100 fewer police officers than a city our size and complexity should have, so give them a break. i seriously doubt they are the one's not wanting to hire more. take it up with your friendly neighborhood supervisor that doesn't want any police on the street bothering their constituents. July 6, 2007 8:51 AM IF the tales from Yelp are correct (and that's a big IF) and a dude was walking around throwing M-60s in the general direction of lots of folks at Dolores Park, I cannot understand why no one had the urge to round up some other guys to clobber this jerk and take the explosives away from him until police could arrive to properly take care of him. I knew San Francisco was a more intelligent and peaceful type City, but the guy was throwing bombs at you basically - come on kids! July 6, 2007 9:28 AM no way in hell this would have been it's own posting if this girl wasn't a white hipster in the mission. you guys can keep ignoring these kind of postings or keep responding with snide little comments but but it's true and you should address it. July 6, 2007 10:14 AM "I knew San Francisco was a more intelligent and peaceful type City, but the guy was throwing bombs at you basically - come on kids!" It's a tough call because if someone decides not to tackle the guy b/c it's not practical or it's too much of a physical risk, that's OK in my book. But if they don't do it because "hey, this is SF, we let people do their own thing, man" - that's just ridiculous. I think we do tend to tolerate anarchy a little more around here. Clearly, SFist's readership has no interest in such a story, thus the lack of commentary and traffic on this story. And we certainly weren't bombarded with reader emails yesterday asking us to update the situation. This is not something that just happened and has been resolved. This is something that, as citizens, we can assist with should we keep our eyes and ears open. It's an ongoing story, and it's even more timely and newsworthy due to the 4th of July angle. July 6, 2007 10:33 AM OK, the hipster bashing is fun and all, but let's keep it on the Josh Wolf thread, okay? Someone got badly hurt for no reason, and that's newsworthy particularly after July 4 Assholes like the perp of this crime are why you can't buy fireworks in SF. July 6, 2007 11:16 AM re: "white hipster" let me get this straight. for shame) victim = "white hipster girl in the mission," no one -- not the authorities, not the public, not her parents, not her friends -- should even care, analyze or even SPEAK of a 16 YEAR OLD GIRL GOING TO A PUBLIC PLACE TO WATCH FIREWORKS ON THE FOURTH OF JULY AND COMING HOME WITH ONE LESS HAND, just because with so many uncivilized nuts running free in SF it's simply to be expected? She is as okay as she can be after her first of many surgeries last night. The letter did come from her dad, but we have an idea who may have thrown it now. This is difficult for her, but it seems like with rehabilitation, she may have use of her fingers, but one, again. July 6, 2007 11:24 AM i would bet anything that everyone who responded to #10 is white. and to #10 i say to you, sfist is racist and they will never admit it or do anything about it. just stop reading, it's not for poc and they want to keep it that way. July 6, 2007 11:42 AM As cool as it would be to turn this into a knock out, drag down over social hierarchy in the lower right quadrant of the City, let's rein it in folks. This girl is going to hear this a lot in the coming weeks, so let me be the first: If Rick Allen can rock sans left arm, you can do it sans a couple of fingers.

Larry A says: repost from a bulletin: SF Drummer Loses Hand! Her dad sent the email below to some local media outlets... Subject: Roisin Isner, Tinkture drummer Hello, I am Roisin's father. July 4th, Roisin and friends were in Dolores Park watching fireworks. She will undego surgery later this morning but it doesn't look good. second and third fingers will also be permanently impaired and disfigured. People know who did it and I'm offering $20,000 for a name. Easy Keel S says: people think they are funny, people hink they are harmless when they are not... But now they have pushed to a zero tolerance thing, but I wonder if it has a counter effect. when we were young, if anybody did have a bottle rocket or a roman candle we would go do it in a field or a open school yard. But now you can't go to an open field because it would be too obvious... so people are shooting rockets from their front yard, hiding m80s and trying to throw them when no ones looking. Assholes next door were shooting rockets out over peoples houses for hours even after people complained. They would fire a couple then hide them, then fire a couple. We have a shingle roof, it would take little to light the whole thing up :( they will most likely find some dumb ass 16 year old boy who never thought it would blow off that girls hand. anna c says: This firework thing is just pissing me off! A co-worker called in this morning and said he can't come into work. Apparently, his neighbor's kids were playing with firework and burn their house down, and damaged part of his house. Thomas F says: if that story is if fact true, the guy who threw the M60 at her should have 5 M80's attached to his genitals and left for dead in the middle of nowhere. Blame the idiots with no common sense or respect for others. Anyone with half a mind can make fireworks, whether legal or not. It takes a bit more presence of mind to use them responsibly. Jack House H says: If its true, that could be attempted murder, or at least reckless disregard for human life, manslaughter. If it had landed on someone's head, it would have killed them. Not a million miles from just throwing a damn grenade into a park. Ruthifer J says: I have to admit to playing with m80's the past few 4th of July's. One time the tube for a lit m80 fell over and the missile flew straight out into the water---we were on Treasure island---it was pretty scary to think the tube could've flipped the other way and blasted back into us. Here's a description of the guy who may or may not be responsible for blowing Roisin's hand off: Please read this and if you know anything do the right thing. I was there with a group of friends and some mothfucker threw an M60 at us up on the ridge and shook the whole fucking ledge. It landed about 5 feet away and our friend Billy had to throw him down the embankment after he approached us waving an empty 40oz bottle b/c we were pissed for almost being blown up. There were HUNDREDS of people siting right where he tossed it. I highly suspect that this is the same piece of shit that blew a girl's hand off in the post below. He was blowing M60's off everywhere and picking up the shells after the fireworks had ended. If you see someone matching this description on or with this bike, call the cops: White male. i tihnk that he had a dark newspaper boy cap on, and his mesenger bag was black with red and black plaid across the flap. His bike was a medium blue fixed gear with black wheels. It also had some white stickers covering a bunch of the downtube. it may have been a stupid ass (like me) that didn't plant the tube deep enough into the ground. At least I hope so, because it's scary to think people would do that on purpose.... so hundreds of folks just sat and watched this drunk dickhead walk around the park throwing M-60s at people? How high on dope is everybody these days that they act like they're watching television or something in real life? A group of guys should have had this guy wrestled on the ground after the first M60 was tossed into the crowd, and at least taken the explosives away from him. Jamie W says: Anybody can be Dirty Harry, so-to-speak ... just like that 72 year old that, instead of allowing a punk 20-something pickpocket him, he grabbed hold of the guy and beat the snot out of him. Marla the Cuttngirl C says: Ok Jamie, I totally agree, But BUT! What about the freak, that when YOU DO confront him, throws it in your face? Your face is blown off, and YOU die a few agonizing days later! Marla the Cuttngirl C says: I have a stupid neighbor that set off big bottle rockets 2 years ago, had another around the corner, more stupid as he was on coke! the 2nd guy lit the neighbors garage almost on fire, and then almost me as I called out I was conming around the corner. So the first guy egged on by other neighbors, lights one that does a horseshe, then turns north befoe zooming south bound into, well on the ohter side of my fence, and it went up in seconds. Thankgod, they had fire extinquishers near and leap ove the 6'tall fence in a single bound. But the neighbors had already called the fire department, not cool, and this asshole is stillup to it. Has been, admitted to setting off the m1000 the other day that started a fire. Adam M says: I doubt that somebody actually threw a firework at her. Which sounds more likely: A group of teenagers are sitting around in the park minding their own business and out of nowhere somebody throws a lit explosive device at this group and it lands on some girls hand and explodes before she can pull it away, OR.... A group of teenagers are in the park and while they are fooling around with fireworks, some girl got her hand blown off. Not to sound like an asshole or anything, but the whole "a firework landed on her hand" story seems like something a group of kids thought up when their friend blew her hand off so that they could appear innocent to their parents and the police. Jack House H says: One of the posters above indicated that there were "hundreds of people" in the park. If this person threw more than 1, as reported, there should be many witnesses. After the first one was thrown, tons of people would be looking for whoever was throwing these things, even on the 4th. last night in SF there were so many m-1000 explosions it was ridiculous. Plus the old fireworks are just trash, I saw tons of used firworks up on Market St. And the dumb thing is, they are right next to grassy hills. Dave M says: my neighborhood smelled like skunk today because of the dingleberries that were lighting them off last night. I don't care if someone proclaims it is part of their culture... No, those firecrackers don't make you look cool, no they don't scare off "evil spirits", no you aren't bad ass if you light one and you hold it. Jean-Marc R says: what amazes me, is that, as a relative newcomer, this city is a complete paradox. For it's relative size, I hear more horrific stories, and read more worrisome headlines, than anywhere else. The land of hippies and beatniks is one of the most crime-ridden, per capita, places I have ever lived. As I read through the thread, I get the general sense there is an unwillingness for anyone to intervene in day-to-day crimes. True, I hear it echoed in crime reports of folks being mugged on bus lines while other passengers watch. Marla the Cuttngirl C says: Either way, someone must have had their hand blown off, and it is a tragedy. But, I have my life, and so do my children, thank what ever God, you pray for. The man in Livermore died a few agonizing days later without a face! The worthless nobody who did this to my daughter will be arrested very soon, tried as an adult and convicted. In prison he will be relentlessly persecuted, raped, beaten. If he survives, he will have me to deal with when he gets out. Hopefully it won't hamper her upcoming matriculation too much. There will be a benefit concert July 16, Punk Rock night at the Hemlock Tavern in SF. Thomas F says: A NOTE FROM MOLLY DEE: i was also at dolores park last night and my friends almost got in a fight with some a$$hole who threw a M60 at us. it blew up about 5 feet away from us on top of one o...
