OpenCola - Open Source Coca Cola Posted on February 18th, 2007. Opencola If you've been to a computer show in recent months you might have seen it: a shiny silver drink can with a ring-pull logo and the words "opencola" on the side. Inside is a fizzy drink that tastes very much like Coca-Cola. There's something else written on the can, though, which sets the drink apart. Go to that Web address and you'll see something that's not available on Coca-Cola's website, or Pepsi's -- the recipe for cola. For the first time ever, you can make the real thing in your own home. OpenCola is a brand of cola unique in that the instructions for making it are freely available and modifiable. Although originally intended as a promotional tool to explain open source software, the drink has taken on a life of its own. The Toronto-based OpenCola company has become better known for the drink than the software it was supposed to promote. Laird Brown, the company's senior strategist, attributed its success to a widespread mistrust of big corporations and the "proprietary nature of almost everything." But since the recipe and the instructions are open source, they are available to anyone who wants to whip up a batch. The Source Computing Blog OpenCola - Open Source Coca Cola February 18th, 2007 Uhm ... Jeff February 18th, 2007 This post seems to be well loved... I wonder if the reason it is defunct is that people said, "hell I won't pay for that stuff I'm making my own"? Winnipeg February 18th, 2007 As one who is intolerant of corn products, I can't drink the regular colas. They use corn syrup for sweetening, since it's cheaper than sugar. I have to drink the unsweetened colas, which don't taste very good. I'd like to try the open cola recipe, but it sure is complicated. Lane Lester February 18th, 2007 difficult to make, but great to know. Too bad someone doesn't whip up a batch and start canning it and selling it or giving it away free - basically the label would be "OPEN SOURCE COLA" and it would have the recipe written right on it. Anthony February 19th, 2007 Ever see those "make your own beer" kits? We need "make your own soda" kits to whip up a patch of this stuff. I always thought that we (as a collective) can make a better cola than Coke/Pepsi. Ivan Minic February 19th, 2007 This can show just how bad cola is for you. If you have to wear gloves to handle it then why would you want to drink it? The Lab47 OpenCola - Open Source Coca Cola February 19th, 2007 I can almost guarantee it tastes like swill, and nothing like real Coke (or Pepsi). Of course, I'm rather snobbish about the soda that I imbibe. Tylor February 19th, 2007 As a past OC employee I appreciate the waves the company is still making on the web, long, long after its demise. I do still have one of the original, full cans sitting above my desk though, as inspiration to what could have been. Chris Cummer February 19th, 2007 i've had OpenCola and still have a few cans in my archive for "historical reasons". with several million dollars invested, it's unfortunate that only the soft drink recipe survived. I like cola, but I've grown accustomed to Coca-Cola and Pepsi - the "dominant ideology" in cola terms, so my senses are very good at noticing anthing "inferiour"/different. I wonder if Open Cola will accidently discover the Coca-Cola recipe? CuteBanana's Blog OpenCola - Open Source Coca Cola February 19th, 2007 what is interesting here is that this is the GPL - not GPL v2 only - which means that when GPL v3 comes out this will automatically shift over. OpenCola A massive dose of Nothing: Welcome to a Purposeless World February 19th, 2007 Heh, this sounds like something that'll look good included in a Linux package! OpenCola - Open Source Coca Cola (from Digg) - OpenCola is a brand of cola unique in that the instructions for making it are freely available and modifiable. LFI February 19th, 2007 "Sadly, the company is now dead." GNU-GPL must adapt to coexist with capitalism or it will never reach any sort of truly measurable success. mango February 19th, 2007 it sounds like a risky proposition to give out your recipe cosmo February 19th, 2007 That's great the recipe wars can now end, this can is revolutionary! February 20th, 2007 while doing this you might like to think about boycotting coca-cola. there are several good reasons to do so, but I'm doing it cause .. Baron VC :: links for 2007-02-19 February 20th, 2007 Myself being a health nut and always wanting to know exactly what is in a recipe and how to make is always a good thing. This means I can substitue ingrediants and yet come out with a cola taste that is a little more healthier than the normal cola but I still feel like I am having a cola. LuAnn Just February 20th, 2007 Now you can make it yourself. uk You do what you're told, but inside your heart, it's black and it's hollow and it's cold February 20th, 2007 Monterrey, NL Mexico is the city that most comsume Coca Cola in the World. Make your own Cola A Pilgrims Way February 21st, 2007 I can't believe no one's quoted this yet, so let me be the first. Marge Simpsons: "Lisa, I made you some homemade Pepsi for the dance; I look forward to attempting to make it someday and seeing what happens. Sounds like it would have provided an alternative to the greedy multinational corporations that are Coca-Cola and Pepsi. This is what the Linux-heads are drinking these days instead of Coke or Pepsi. Februar 2007 OpenCola , Cola , punkrock , punk OpenSource und DIY sind tolle Zeitgenossen, nach dem jahrelang schon etablierten Selberbrauen von Bier kann man sich jetzt auch seine eigene Cola machen. Gut fr Nicht-Alkoholiker wie mich oder auch fr die Anarcho-Kommune mit chronischer Unterzuckerung.
