the following statement: It's a sad commentary about the level of fear in our society that a movie about a group of courageous entertainers who were blacklisted for exercising their right of free speech is now itself being blacklisted by corporate America. The idea that anyone should be penalized for criticizing the president is profoundly un-American. ThinkProgress has obtained the ad NBC doesn't want you to see.
Very sad that NBC is afraid to stand up to Bush who is the worst president in United States' history > shame on NBC, so they must be boycotted by progressives now!
I think we need to prepare to apply some strong pressure on the (crossing fingers) new chair of whatever House committee oversee the FCC and broadcast licensing.
That this is being censored by NBC should be trumpeted far and wide, held us as clear and concise evidence that America is fast approaching a bona fide, demonstrable state of fascism in terms of its governance, and the collusion therein by the likes of NBC, Fox, WaPo et al .. But i guess that has been pretty evident for some time now, and those who don't want to see it or believe it will not be convinced by yet one more piece of clear evidence.
The war being waged in this country between the haves and the have-nots, is between the big corporations, and the common good. This is the source of American Fascism, and George Bush is just one of the pawns in their game. Until Americans begin to ask whose agenda is driving this country, and how are they expointing our fears, and our weakness, to advance their own corporate interests, no resistance will be possible.
But we have the right to blast them for not showing something based not on a longstanding policy like CBS's, but simply because the ad in question is critical of the President. Last I checked, this was supposed to be America, not Cuba.
Remember we have a president who does not tolerate bad news or criticism. With his newly acquired "war powers" it is simply a matter of time before "disparaging remarks" of the president will earn you a visit and detainment from the FBI. What a wonderful job our representatives have done to maintain our freedoms and they did so in fewer days than any other congress!
From BNF's post on the Thinkfast thread: There is an interesting freedom of speech issue. Television networks receive government licenses to use portions of the ultraviolet spectrum to transmit their broadcasts. NBC is exercising self-censorship solely on the grounds that it disparages the president'. What about ABC showing the Road to 9/11 which disparaged another president?
We now live under a dictatorship no better than China or Cuba. Free speech is only allowed if it supports the Bush regime. Our media has become exclusively government approved propaganda while being labeled as "liberal" media. Seems more likely that the new electronic voting machines will report more republican votes, because of course the voting machine companies wouldn't want to "disparage" the republican party by showing accurate vote counts.
The Dixie Chicks Ad NBC Doesn't Want You To See (Video)... NBC is refusing to air an ad for the new Dixie Chicks documentary, "Shut Up & Sing." Variety reports, "NBC's commercial clearance department said in writing that it cannot accept these spots as they are disparaging to President B..
Have NBC affiliates run the ads against Ford in Tennessee? Do they show Ann Coulter, who advocates killing Supreme Court Justices? It seems to me that NBC is selective about whom they are willing to offend. Not very good stewardship of their FCC license, I'd say.
Defames officials by making up scenes and dialog which did not occur. NBC refuses to accept money to run a advertisement which shows Bush's own words. There is something very scary going on in the corporate world. Once the media becomes a puppet of a dictator, there is little the general population can do.
One protester wanted the Dixie Chicks to move to France... If YOU don't like freedom of speech, why don't YOU move to some place like North Korea? If you're a devout Christian why not move to Rome where you can be close to the Vatican? The whole point of being in America is having the freedom to speak what you wish, and the freedom to question and criticize OUR elected leader if we're not happy with his policies.
I am sure there are plenty of other networks that will run the ad. For Mr JJ Commoner: That this is being censored by NBC should be trumpeted far and wide, held us as clear and concise evidence that America is fast approaching a bona fide, demonstrable state of fascism in terms of its governance, and the collusion therein by the likes of NBC, Fox, WaPo et al .. I think that you'll find that both Liberals and Conservative think we are heading towards that fascist state, due to either the restriction or the lack of. don't forget to include NOW, MoveOn, the universities, the Catholics, the Jewish, and don't forget to blame our parents too.
Roger x2 As usual thank you for my daily dose of laughter on the account of your miopic viewpoint. When a corporation like NBC sends an army of lawyers to the courthouse to pursuade the judge to allow TV cameras into the court room because the press has the right to broadcast trial under the First Amendment, it cannot then turn around and deny that same right to an advertiser. More importantly, NBC's actions help to prove that we no longer live in the democratically elected republic envisioned by Hamilton, Jefferson and the rest of the founding fathers. I hope I just hope your brown shirt is startched and pressed, your jackboots polished to a high gloss shine so when the call comes, you can run out like a the littel Nazi that you are and betray your inheritance from the Founding Fathers, the Constitution and the United States of America.
But let's get over expecting old media to report what matters. More importantly, let's always use such media mis-steps to our advantage. NBC's bungling here (like ABC's recent 9/11 doculamess) will do more to promote this documentary than a few ads on TV shows that fewer and fewer of us are watching. Progressive jui jitsu is what it's all about, using our opponents' weight against them. And hats off the the Dixie Chickes for creating music and now film that spread their message far more powerfully than the dying media dinosaurs do.
What NBC's position represents is not them exercising their "right to free speech". First off, they are a steward of the broadcast airwaves and cable bandwidth that they transmit over, not the owners of it. That concept alone requires some substantial thought and understanding. Secondly, their reasoning for not accepting the ad is censorship. Now, if the ad contained nudity, then they would be only abiding by law. If the ad was deceptive and meant to criminally harm NBC's viewers, then they would have a moral leg to stand on. However, the reason that they are not allowing the ad to run is that it could cause people to have bad thoughts about mr. NBC is censoring information not because it is false, not because it is misleading, and not because it is obscene. No, NBC will not run it because it may cause you to have unpleasant thoughts about your president, whether they are justified or not. If you do not see how this is an offense to every free thinker in the world then you are neither free nor a thinker. The next steps on this path to hell that NBC is leading you on involve thought police and ministries of accepted practices and the sorts. If it is your choice to follow NBC on this path, then I hope that you enjoy the journey because I can assure you that you will not enjoy the destination. But don't expect company on your path and it is the action of a petulant child to criticize others for not being willing to make the same mistake as you.
Many are very offended by these girls and would look down on NBC if they supported them. They simply decided that they would do better business by avioding them. They certainly could be wrong, but this is one of many tough business decisions they make everyday. Maybe enough of you will be upset by NBC that it will backfire and they will lose some shareholder v...
