10/14 Bush Brownshirts attack gallery owner for displaying contriversial art: http://www.capogallerysf.com So one of the Bush supportes on the motd claims that this was a "hoax." Do you seriously believe that this woman broke her own nose as a publicity stunt? \_ 1) Go read this for what the real brown shirts did: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_of_broken_glass If you read that you might learn something. By slapping "hitler!!!" on every trivial event you only make yourself sound like Chicken Little and an ignorant idiot. 2) A single isolated event does not a conspiracy make. Here are two more isolated events that prove nothing: http://tinyurl.com/uqkjy (icayrshire.icnetwork.co.uk) http://tinyurl.com/y4aqqt (http://www.king5.com \_ It was hardly a single isolated event. That was the one in *San*Francisco* that I was aware of. This kind of thing was repeated hundreds of times all over the country. It is to bad you think that a random gang attack on an unfortunate soldier on leave is somehow equavalent to calculated political violence intended to intimidate and silence \_ So you have a problem with equating two acts of violence against individuals (neither of which were state- sanctioned) but you have no problem with equating a single act of violence with the systematic state-organized round-up of Jews? Okay, this is obviously a troll here. Everybody move along... your opponents. By the Bush Adminsitration standards, the attack on the gallery owner was in fact terrorism, but you will never see the GOP go on record as opposing their thugs. The second attack "baby killer" one, is reprehnesible too. \_ This kind of thing was repeated hundreds of times all over the country? Really? Where is the proof? If this is really happening, I guess the vast-right-wing conspiracy that controls the media is covering it up. \_ No, it was all dismissed as some local rowdy. It just isn't "news." Just like the soldier that got beaten up, it was never widely spread. You must not get out of the Bay Area much. \_ I see. It has happened everywhere but no one knows about it because it has been covered up by the VRWC. Ok. We're done here. \_ So basically this is an organized campaign of terror that has been skillfully disguised by the Bush Brownshirts to look like a bunch of random acts of violence by some local loony? Well, I guess the people behind the coverup of the alien presence at Area-51 needed some- thing to do after X-Files went off the air. The Tru7h is Out There! 3) http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/controversial art is going to elicit unwanted and sometimes violent responses from idiots. I don't think someone should have punched her nose in for hosting some pictures of Abu Graib but with 300 million people in the country I'm not surprised she found one nut. Is there a guy in jail for it? That's what our system does with violent nuts. Does 1 idiot mean we're on the road to a brown shirt night of broken glass? No. Come back when you have some sense of history. \_ No one was punished for the act of violence. \_ Probably because there wasn't an act to investigate. She didn't conce. \_ Probably because there wasn't an act to investigate. She didn't cooperate with police so how are they supposed to do their jobs? Cop magic? Or was it a conspiracy of The Blue Shield to stand in the way of Progressive Art? I've changed my mind. I'm not done here, this is getting fun. 4) You diminish what really happened to real people who were truly innocent by casually flipping Nazi terms at people and seeing conspiracy where there is none. I don't actually expect you to get a clue here but it cost me nothing to try. Please carry on with your tinfoil idiocy and abuse of history. \_ Beyond wikipedia articles, people who want to know more about what really happened in Germany during the rise of Nazism should read Mein Kampf. I think that finding elements of mass behavior in today's society that are slightly similar to that of pre-Nazi german behavior is not always crazy, but comparing almost anyone to Hitler is almost always crazy. Fortunately, that man was unique.-!OP should read Rise and Fall of the 3rd Reich. I think that finding elements of mass behavior in today's society that are slightly similar to that of pre-Nazi german behavior is not always crazy, but comparing almost anyone to Hitler is almost always crazy. Fortunately, that man was unique.-!OP \_ The rise of Nazism was due: 1) the over- representation of Jews in the leadership of the Weimar republic which most Germans viewed as profligate and destroying traditional German society and 2) the overwhelming presence of Jews among the Bolsheviks and their involvement in the Russian revolution which led to the slaughter of millions of Russians. I imagine most Germans wanted to avoid a similar revolution there. and 2) the disproportionate presence of Jews among the Bolshevik leadership and their involvement in the Russian revolution which led to the slaughter of millions of Russians. I imagine most Germans wanted to avoid a similar revolution there. \_ So your contention is that this is okay because what these guys did was not as bad as what Hitler did? Okay, strange stance to take, but I guess that is where you stand. \_ No, it is not OK to punch someone in the nose because you don't like their art. Nor is it ok because it doesn't rise to Hitlerian levels of violence. See point 3. Thanks. \_ Um, Bush Brownshirts? So you are claiming that the President sanctioned this attack? Or that the President would refuse to enforce criminal sanctions against those who perpetrated the attack, if the SFPD and the DA were to bring charges against them? \- http://www.cafepress.com/ipa_politics.14449333 \_ A mouse pad proves Bush sanctioned this alleged attack and hundreds of others no one heard of? Can one of you investing types please tell me how to get into metals futures? Thanks. \_ It does, however, prove that you have no sense of irony. \_ It isn't irony. It's a mouse pad. Maybe you needed the translation from German to see the lack of irony. \- which bring us back to metals. --man with the iron mouse pad \_ aren't you concerned it will rust? i suspect "rusty mouse pad" is not covered by your dell support agreement. \_ It was a hoax: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1151762/posts \_ It's worth noting that the freeper posts in this thread do not offer any support for the alleged nose-puncher. \_ This one sure does though: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1144565/posts \_ I'm not saying you're wrong, but would you mind a pointer to a particular post? I don't feel like scrolling through 5 pages of "hee haw!" for that. -John \_ The Truth IS Out There, John. You just have to open your eyes! --Mulder \_ If finding the truth involves sifting through pages of idiots, I'll stay ignorant! -John \_ You are getting so area 51 abduction black helicoptered. Then you'll believe. --Mulder \_ Maybe the Bush Brownshirts were too busy to attack her that day b/c of all the "hundreds" of other attacks they had to carry out (not to mention all the media outlets they had to silence), so she took it upon herself to help them out and attack herself. them out and attack herself. Even if she hadn't faked it, it might possibly maybe have happened on its own at some indeterminate time in the future when the Brownshirts weren't so busy. So even if she faked it, its just as good as if she had actually been attacked by the Bush Brownshirts. |

www.capogallerysf.com On March 19th Lori Haigh, the owner of the Capobianco Gallery was assulte d and severly injured for displaying a piece of art by local artist Guy Colwell. The piece of art titled "The Abuse" depicted the atrocities inf licted upon prisoners at the Abu Gharib prison. SF Weekly article concerning the Mark Mothersbaugh show points out, but never to point of physicial viole nce or death threats. It's someone's thoughts put on canvas for everyone to ex perience. At this time, no one knows what has happened to Lori Haigh. Some claim th at Haigh is now one of the many homeless who roam the city streets. It's also been heard that Lori works in an Oakland factory assembling machin es used by embalmers that are sent to warzones to aid in managing the re mains of the dead. I'm sorry someone punched you in the face, if it had been me, I would have taken a flat nose shovel or cr owbar to your head... After displaying a painting of US soldiers torturing Iraqi prisoners, a San Francisco gallery owner bears a painful reminder of the nation's un resolved anguish over the incidents at Abu Ghraib -- a black eye and blo odied brow delivered by an unknown assailant who apparently objected to the art work. only the latest in a string of verbal and physical attac ks that have been directed at owner Lori Haigh since the painting, title d "Abuse," was installed there on May 16. Painted by Berkeley artist Guy Colwell, "Abuse," the painting at the cent er of the controversy, depicts three US soldiers leering at a group of naked men in hoods with wires connected to their bodies. The one in the foreground has a blood-spattered American flag patch on his uniform. In the background, a soldier in sunglasses guards a blindfolded woman. Two days after the painting went up in a front window, someone threw eggs and dumped trash on the doorstep. Haigh said she didn't think to connec t it to the black-and-white interpretation of the events at Baghdad's no torious prison until people started leaving nasty messages and threats o n her business answering machine. "I think you need to get your gallery out of this neighborhood before you get hurt," one caller said. Even after she removed the painting from the window, the criticism contin ued thanks to news coverage about the gallery's troubles. The answering machine recorded new calls from people accusing her of being a coward fo r taking the picture down. Last weekend, a man walked into the gallery, pretended to scrutinize the art work for a moment, then marched up to Ha igh's desk and spat directly in her face. On Thursday, someone knocked on the door of the gallery, then punched Hai gh in the face when she stepped outside. In closing the gallery, Haigh was forced to cancel an upcoming show featu ring counterculture artist Winston Smith. She covered the windows of the gallery with old newspapers from Sept. Among the expressions of support she's received since shuttering the gallery, her favorite is an e-mail whose writer said, "I'm sure that a few and dangerous minds d on't understand that they have only mimicked the same perversity this pa inting had expressed." Outside the gallery on Friday, someone had left a bouquet of flowers alon g with a note reading, "The woman who ran this gallery is a brave and ho norable woman. In spite of t he attackers intentions to censor the gallery, their crime has spurred t he interests of the press, and has caused a worldwide exposure of the pa inting. No doubt, not only the value of the painting will dramatically i ncrease, but people will remember it for ages to come (emotional artisti c expression, regardless of how good or bad, has this effect on art). Yes this painting depicts a very dark period of the United States, but it does not reflect the feelings of most Americans. It does, however, depi ct the actions of some Americans. The behavior of the abusers of the Abu Ghraib prison stem from the illegal actions coming from the Bush admini stration. So if any American objects to this painting as dishonoring and besmirching the United States, consider the source of the dishonor. For evermore, this painting will trigger memories of George W Bush, Donald Rumsfeld and a few other bad apples. So instead of attacking the symbolic representation of this painting, or the people who display it, why not take action against the few people wh o hold responsibility for the abuse at Abu Ghraib prison (and other US c ontrolled prisons around the world), namely the people of the Bush admin istration, by voting them out of power this November? How dare the incompetent and willful members of this Bush/Cheney Administ ration humiliate our nation and our people in the eyes of the world and in the conscience of our own people. How dare they subject us to such di shonor and disgrace. How dare they drag the good name of the United Stat es of America through the mud of Saddam Hussein's torture prison. I'm reprinting it here wit h his permission: Defiant For the Capobianco Gallery Not just elsewhere But right here In North Beach The power of painting To provoke and endure Has called out The old hatreds: Death threats, spittle, A physical attack on a Gallery owner by Detestable little Worms from the fascist can of abuse That's been thrown wide open. When the people Gather, what's been terrifying Turns to dust. And brush strokes Turn into the proverbial Thumbs in the eyes of Censoring war thugs, Because the freedom To create a work of art Is of the deepest affirmation Of the human heart And its very deathlessness Is why no violence can Ever long prevent the beauty Of its truth of liberty from being Triumphant in its struggle Against the lie of the living dead. "The enemy cannot be triumphant in this kind of situation," Hirschman say s "The gallery has to open again." On May 16, according to AP, she installed a piece of artwork by Guy Colwe ll entitled "Abuse." htm) is an elaboration of the torture that went on at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. In the foreground of Colwell's painting are two grinnin g US soldiers, one man and one woman, with American flags on their sle eves. The man is holding a cattle prod, and the woman, a cigarette dangl ing from her mouth, is holding electrical wires. Those wires are attache d to the fingers of three naked male Iraqi detainees, who are standing o n cylinder blocks. In the background, two othe r American soldiers in sunglasses are leading a shackled and blindfolded woman into the room. Haigh placed the painting in the front window of her gallery. Two days la ter, "someone threw eggs and dumped trash on the doorstep," AP reported, and "people started leaving nasty messages and threats on her business answering machine." She told AP that she received "about 200 angry voice mails, e-mails, and death threats." So she decided to remove the painting, but still things got worse. One day, someone walked into the gallery and spit in her face. And then on May 27, someone "knocked on the door of the gallery, then pun ched Haigh in the face, knocking her out, breaking her nose, and causing a concussion," AP said. Two days later, she still had a bad black right eye, with purple on the cheek next to the eye, one bandage over the nos e, and another over her right eyebrow. The abuse was too much for her--she has two young kids--so she has closed her gallery down. com, you will see a pictur e of the gallery's front door, with yellow caution tape across the front . "This isn't art-politics central here at all," Haigh told AP. I never set out to be a crusader or a political acti vist." On Saturday, May 29, artists, poets, and other defenders of the First Ame ndment rallied in support of Haigh, her gallery, Colwell, and free expre ssion. "In effect, the attackers, instead of writing 'Jew' on the window, wrote 'Artist' on the window," poet Jack Hirschman, who spoke at the rally, te lls me. "The attack was really something out of the Brown Shirts." "This is all too scary for me," Haigh, who was at the rally, told the San Francisco Chronicle. But the paper said she was "visibly moved by the s how of support" and is "weighing her options." I called the phone number of the gallery and got only this message:... |
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_of_broken_glass Walter H Pehle, a historian specializing in modern Germany, has argued that the direct translation should be unacceptable because its original intent was cynically propagandizing the violence into something metaphorically holding "sparkle and gleam" for Germany. In the term Reichskristallnacht, the prefix "Reichs-" conveys the sense of "national". Nazi propaganda, but rather its colloquial basis, especially in Berlin. Aware of the fact that much more serious crimes than breaking windows were committed, the euphemistic term was coined because people feared repression by the Nazi state apparatus for calling the pogrom a pogrom. Many people also saw that the events of that evening were not an outbreak of the "spontaneous wrath of the German people" as the Nazi propaganda tried to portray it, but a state-organized act of terror, executed mainly by party activists in casual garb. Nuremberg Laws By the end of the 1920s, most German Jews were loyal to their country, assimilated and relatively prosperous. They served in the German army and contributed to every field of German science, business and culture. edit October deportations and the assassination of vom Rath On October 28, 1938, 17,000 Polish Jews living in Germany (some for more than a decade), were arrested and taken to the river marking the Polish-German border and forced to cross it. The Polish border guards sent them back over the river into Germany and this stalemate continued for days in the pouring rain, the Jews marching without food or shelter between the borders until the Polish government admitted them to a concentration camp. edit Organization Vom Rath's assassination served as an excuse for launching a rampage against Jewish inhabitants throughout Germany. The word of this death reached Hitler during his "Old Fighters" dinner with several key members of the Nazi party. After intense conversation Hitler left the assembly immediately without giving his usual address. Friedlander, among other historians, believes that Goebbels had personal reasons for wanting to bring about Kristallnacht. Goebbels had recently suffered humiliation in the ineffectiveness of his propaganda campaign during the Sudeten crisis, and was in disgrace over an affair with a Czech actress. Goebbels thus needed a chance to prove himself in the eyes of his master, and Kristallnacht was just that. The Gauleiters started at about 10:30pm, only two hours after news of vom Rath's death reached Germany. They were followed by the SA at 11pm, and the SS at around 1:20am. Most were wearing civilian clothes and were armed with sledgehammers and axes, and soon went to work on destruction of Jewish property. The orders given to these men were very specific however; no measures endangering German life or property were to be taken (Synagogues too close to German property were smashed rather than burned), Jewish businesses or dwellings could be destroyed but not looted, foreigners (even Jewish foreigners) were not to be the subjects of violence, and synagogue archives were to be transferred to the SD. The men were also ordered to arrest as many Jews as the local jails would hold, preferable targets being young healthy males, and rich if possible. Enlarge Kristallnacht, example of physical damage Jewish homes and stores were ransacked all throughout Germany and also in Vienna, with a mixture of German citizens and Stormtroops going to destroy buildings with sledgehammers, leaving the streets covered in smashed windows of destroyed businesses the next morning (the origin of the name "Crystal Night"). Although violence against Jews had not been condoned by the authorities, there were cases of Jews being beaten or assaulted. synagogues (constituting nearly all Germany had), many Jewish cemeteries, more than 7,000 Jewish shops, and 29 department stores. Some Jews were beaten to death while others were forced to watch. Eberswalde synagogue set on fire during Kristallnacht The number of German Jews killed is uncertain, with estimates ranging from 36 to about 200 over two days of rioting. The number killed in the rioting is most often cited as 91. There are believed to have been hundreds of suicides in addition to this, as the slim slivers of hope that remained in some Jews disappeared completely. Counting deaths at the concentration camps, around 2,000-2,500 deaths, were directly or indirectly attributable to the Kristallnacht pogrom. A few non-Jewish Germans mistaken for Jews were also killed. The synagogues, some centuries old, were also victims of sadistic violence, with the tactics the Stormtroops practiced on these and other sacred sites were described as "approaching the ghoulish" by the United States Consul in Leipzig. Even graveyards were not spared, as tombstones were uprooted and graves violated. Fires were lit, and prayer books, scrolls, artwork and philosophy were thrown upon them, and the precious buildings were either burned or smashed until unrecognizable. Eric Lucas recalls the destruction of the synagogue that a tiny Jewish community had constructed in a small village only twelve years earlier: It did not take long before the first heavy grey stones came tumbling down, and the children of the village amused themselves as they flung stones into the many coloured windows. When the first rays of a cold and pale November sun penetrated the heavy dark clouds, the little synagogue was but a heap of stone, broken glass and smashed-up woodwork. Most of Vienna's 94 synagogues and prayer-houses were partially or totally destroyed. People were subjected to all manner of humiliations, including being forced to scrub the pavements whilst being tormented by their fellow Austrians, some of whom had been their friends and neighbors. Buchenwald concentration camp The violence was officially called to a stop by Goebbels on November 11, but violence continued against the Jews in the concentration camps despite orders requesting "special treatment" to ensure that this did not happen. On November 23 the News Chronicle newspaper of London published an article on an incident at one concentration camp Sachsenhausen. Sixty-two Jews suffered punishment so severe that the police "unable to bear their cries, turned their backs". They were beaten until they fell, and when they fell, they were further beaten. For half an hour they were submitted to this "orgy" of violence. At the end of it, "twelve of the sixty-two were dead, their skulls smashed. The eyes of some had been knocked out, their faces flattened and shapeless". The 30,000 Jewish males that had been imprisoned during Kristallnacht were released over the next three months, but by then over 2,000 had died. Hermann Gring met with other members of the Nazi leadership on November 12 to plan the next steps after the riot, setting the stage for formal government action that would eventually lead to the Holocaust. Fhrer's orders requesting that the Jewish question be now, once and for all, coordinated and solved one way or another... I should not want to leave any doubt, gentlemen, as to the aim of today's meeting. The Jewish Community Center was built in its place in 1959. The persecution and economic damage done to German Jews did not stop with the pogrom, even as their places of business were ransacked. Six million marks of insurance payments for property damage due to the Jewish community were to be paid to the government instead as "damages to the German Nation". A less desirable outcome was the international reaction, as several important nations condemned the acts. Perhaps the most important result was that despite these reactions, the Nazi party never faced significant repercussions, and so came to believe that the world would tolerate persecution on this scale. Some even went as far as to help Jews on the night, but the majority merely sat inside watching in horror, feeling helpless to do anything. Other German citizens took part, as it was not just Stormtroopers rioting. Evidence of this can be seen firstly in that riots broke out on the night of November 7 and continued in some places after the pogrom was later called to a stop, which were thus not the actions of the Nazis... |

Police say the beating happened in broad daylight off busy Pacific Avenue near 138th Street South. As the guardsman was walking to a convenience store, an SUV pulled up along side the man and the driver rolled down his window and asked the soldier was in the military and if he had seen any action. The next thing he knew, the driver - who was toting a handgun -- jumped out with four other men and kicked him to the ground and started punching and kicking him. Pierce County deputies are hoping a $,1,000 reward can help catch the men who launched what by all accounts was an unprovoked attack. The attackers were reportedly in a black Chevy Suburban type SUV. The suspects are all white and some of the men in their early to mid 20's were wearing red baseball caps and red sweatshirts. "During the assault, they called him a baby killer and made some other comments regarding the military," Pierce County Sheriff's Office spokesman Ed Troyer said. "At this point, our victim is black, our suspects are white, but there was no mention made of any race issues. We believe he was targeted due to wearing the military clothing and the comment that were made were about war and about his military activity and had nothing to do with race," Troyer said. www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1151762/posts Haigh, a 39-year old twice-divorced mother of two and the manager of a San Francisco art gallery faced the media after being vandalized and beaten for exhibiting an anti Iraqi War painting. But to more than a few people who did not go to the beach or attend a picnic during over the holiday weekend, the name Lori Haigh conjured more than a few memories. This was because Lori Haigh was no stranger to playing the role of a victim. She was also not unfamiliar with controversy and doubts about her credibility. The present chain of events for Lori Haigh began in early 2003 when she opened a gallery called Capobianco, her maiden name, in the North Beach section of San Francisco. In mid May 2004, in the midst of the Abu Ghraib prison scandal in Iraq, Haigh accepted a painting from Berkeley artist Guy Colwell titled ''Abuse,'' which shows three hooded, naked prisoners connected to electrical wires held by American soldiers. Another soldier with a robed woman is seen in the background. The painting was displayed in the front window of her gallery. Phone threats and vandalism soon followed and Haigh was physically attacked twice in broad daylight over a four-day period. She went public on May 29, complete with a photo of her bruises. Even for a holiday weekend, the story attracted much attention in the San Francisco Bay Area with lesser coverage nationally. Predictably, the tale of an art dealer being attacked because of politics brought an outpouring of support from various artists and leftist activists. Colwell took his work home although some San Francisco supervisors want to show the painting at City Hall. Haigh has gone into seclusion and may have moved out of the San Francisco area. None of the news acocunts provided any sources to collaborate any parts of her story, including Colwell or personal friends of Haigh. com, wrote that a source close to the police investigation says Haigh's story has ''all the earmarks of a hoax'' and that she has not cooperated with officers investigating the alleged threats. Despite Haigh's beatings being a high-profile local story, the SFPD website doesn't include any mention of the incidents. Paid in 2002, the settlement was based on an allegation that she was abused and impregnated by a clergyman while being driven to and from music practices more than 20 years earlier. Although John Lenihan, the priest in question, acknowledged several sexual relationships with young women, he never admitted to an affair with Haigh. There was never a hearing or a trial on Haigh's allegations against Lenihan and her payout came during the period where the dioceses were under heavy national siege during the height of the clergy abuse scandal. Haigh also accused one other priest of misconduct and another of failing to act after she revealed her molestation allegations. Even though Haigh passed a lie detector test, both of these clergymen denied her accusations and one sued, but a judge subsequently threw out the case. Perhaps not wanting to press her luck further with the church's largess, Haigh's charges have quietly been withdrawn. While in Tennessee, she was accused by her employer of fraud, embezzlement, forgery, and conversion and misappropriation of funds resulting in damages of approximately $107,000. In February 1995 during the discovery phase in the case, Haigh, then using her maiden name Capobianco, invoked the Fifth Amendment and refused to answer questions concerning unauthorized checks. Eventually Haigh fled to Northern California, filed for bankruptcy and ultimately agreed to a $96,000 settlement with her former Tennessee employer. In this period she also married and divorced her second husband whom she met in London, producing her second child. There was also a period where she worked in the video business on such ventures as photographing professional wrestling and also attempted a career as a songwriter. And there are other interesting tidbits that don't increase Haigh's credibility quotient: quotes of her supposed ignorance to the anti-Iraq nature of Colwell's painting and playing dumb about anti-war newspaper articles that covered the windows of her gallery when it was closed. Reportedly an IRS lien was filed against Haigh last January and there is a question of money owed her landlord now that the gallery has apparently closed. Finally there are episodes of self-inflicted wounds from her molestation days that were described in the Los Angeles Times following her church settlement. Some nurses who have viewed the photos of her latest beatings are not convinced they are legitimate. Suffice it to say that given Haigh's past, the lack of a witness to her assaults, and for whatever reason, the police department's laissez faire approach to investigating the crime, this story reeks of being a hoax. More importantly, it is another blow for those who seek the complete truth. And for Lori Haigh, it is yet another 15 minutes of fame, under somewhat questionable circumstances. Some thought I was insensitive on the original thread for suggesting only a "time out" for her victimizers, but something inside me told me this story was not true. View Replies To: cweese It was at a "private" party in Carly Simon's daughter's club on Martha's Vineyard during one of klyntyn's focus-group vacations there- the 1996 one just 3 mos. "What's important is not to focus on the actions of any individual," said Peskin, "but to remember that San Francisco stood up for someone it perceived to be in danger and that San Francisco stood up for artists and for freedom of expression in this City." It doesn't matter if she staged a hoax as long everbody got to sing kumbaya in the end? It doesn't matter if she staged a hoax as long everbody got to sing kumbaya in the end? It's not the first time that a hoaxter's apologist has voiced this type of sentiment, in fact it's de rigueur. They love to say that how the issue comes to light is not important, only that their (nonexistent) issue is getting press. However, the issue is so nonexistent that it needs to be made up whole cloth. Add this to the growing list of questionable statements from everybody's favorite martyr. This is a woman who can buy a 4-story house in SF and open an art gallery in a high-rent district, but can't afford medical insurance for herself and the two children she constantly says she needs to protect? RGSpincich "What's important is not to focus on the actions of any individual," said Peskin, "but to remember that San Francisco stood up for someone it perceived to be in danger and that San Francisco stood up for artists and for freedom of expression in this City." In this one statement, Pestkin virtually admits that Lori Haigh is perpetrating a hoax and that the police have told him so. He's trying to avoid egg on his face, while still scoring election year political points with his leftist constituents. This is a far cry from his confident assertions in past weeks. View Replies To: vikingchick Sounds like the same arguement that lady prof used when she vandalized her car and called it a hate crime. www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1144565/posts zencat After displaying a painting of US soldiers torturing Iraqi prisoners, a San Francisco gallery owner bears a painful reminder of the nations unresolved anguish over the incidents at Abu Ghraib -- a black eye and bloodied brow delivered by an unknown assailant who apparently objected to the art work. The assault outside the Capobianco gallery in the citys North Beach district Thursday night was the worst, but only the latest in a string of verbal and physical attacks that have directed at owner Lori Haigh since the painting, titled "Abuse," was installed there on May 16. View Replies To: zencat Whoever hit that lady should be ashamed of him- or herself -- and I hope they catch the person. There are far better ways of voicing one's differing opinion. Resorting to physical violence only empowers and elevates the artist and gallery owner. The violence accomplished nothing other than elevating the gallery owner to the status of a martyr. It also increases the value of the art, which is otherwise worthless crap. View Replies What the hell are we supposed to say about this? I mean, assaulting someone is illegal and mostly wrong, but once in a while some idiot needs to take a beating that their parents should have given to them when they were growing up and learning how not to be patriotic in the true sense of the word, and not in the liberal sense of the word. Without condonning the action but just commenting on the human spirit of pride & preservation of character forcing someones hand. It's not a recommended response, but it sure did leave a mark and get noticed in a city of dingbats. The intensity of the manhunt for the culprit will also equal the outrage. View Replies To: bdeaner Maybe the gallery owner should NOT have made a statement by putting this piece of crap in the window, shoving it in everyone's face. This is a BS story, glad her gallery failed and I congratulate the the local residents. View Replies To: zencat Assuming she didn't stage it herself - which is a terrible thought but, some liberals have been staging dramatic crimes lately - I have to say I'm pretty sad to see this type of behavior. The irony, of course, is that it's only "hate speech" when a liberal's offended. View Replies To: zencat From later on in the article: "This isnt art-politics central here at all," Haigh said. I never set out to be a crusader or a political activist." That explains why the offensive painting is in the front window and not mixed in with the rest of the paintings in the exhibit. As to Mr Colwell, this gal is either lying through her teeth or breathtakingly ignorant. htm Guy Colwell was born in Oakland, California in 1945. He studied two years at the California College of Arts and Crafts and worked as a toy sculptor for Mattel in 1966. In 1968, he was imprisoned for draft resistance and spent two years in jail. He started working on his first comic book in 1972, 'Inner City Romance, in which he depicted tales of political repression, violence and ghetto and prison life. For Guy Colwell comics happened in two distinct eras: in the political, communal 1970s he worked on underground comix with social consciousness, doing strips and illustrations for the San Francisco Good Times, working on his 'Inner City Romance' comics and being in the middle of a vibrant comic artist community (Last Gasp) that partied and worked closely together. In the more commercial 1980s he moved to Auburn, California where he worked on 'Doll' and other adult comics for Rip Off Press and being isolated from the comic scene he knew before. Colwell left the comic scene in 1990 to return to his life's work of painting. He completed a 700-square-foot rainforest wall at the Oakland zoo, a large canvas based on Minoan Crete for Caf Mediterranean in Berkeley, and is presently working on a series of wildlife murals for the Placer Nature Center in Auburn. A quick look at other links from Googling show that this guy is a hardcore lifetime radical and borderline pervert. I believe that painting was put there to elicit a response. If I'm right, she expected threatening calls and perhpas broken windows, but someone got physical with her. Shouldn't have happened, but despite her professed ignorance, I believe she deliberately set out to provoke a violent response. View Replies To: bdeaner Perhaps they already know that, and the whole thing is a setup to advance the story and therefore the artist and his art. I myself am somewhat of an artist and have an art degree. Artists will do bizarre things to try to make a name for themselves and create their own little following. Most of them wind up trashed on drugs trying to extrapolate life's meaning from a stack of soup cans. View Replies To: bfree No doubt in that particular part of San Francisco there are more than anyone's fair share of homosexuals who DO NOT appreciate having homosexual/homoerotic behavior and events being put in a bad light, or, maybe it's just an irate sado-masochist this time! View Replies To: bfree Geez you call yourself bfree, if you cannot be free to speak our views without getting attacked then what the hell are those soldiers doing over there. Looks like the terrorists won because you people have up on our freedoms. I'm reminded of that teacher who was caught writing "hate words" on her own vehicle." She claims there's no political statement in the art and that the newspapers she covered the window with just coincidentally show stories on Abu Ghraib. This is not believable and, for me, it casts doubt on the rest of her story. We've seen leftists do just that several times over recent years -- the latest at Claremont McKenna College in Southern California just a few months ago. Loopy left-wing female professor vandalized her own car, but cracked under pressure when the FBI was called in to investigate it as a 'hate crime'. I'll be content to watch what becomes of this story though. a black eye and bloodied brow delivered by an unknown assailant who apparently objected to the art work." This seems to be a misunderstanding with artistic interpretation. This is simply one art lover (as in martial art) showing their artistic appreciation to another art lover. She should be flattered that another art lover was so moved by her gallery. View Replies To: Bonaparte It's easy when you have an "unknown assailant." And later, she says she hopes her gallery is one day famous enough to attract big-name artists. View Replies To: chatmat Sounds like the neighbors exercised their right of free speech also. I have no desire to become muslim and I will not tolerate this crap, that, by the way, is my right. View Replies To: The KG9 Kid Her lefty friends may have decided that she needed more controversy, and decided to "help" her. She may not have even been in on it, so she wouldn't be lying when she reported it to law enforcement. That's where these other incidents you mention fall apart, so the left needs to do something else. View Replies To: zencat The ol' man used to have a saying, "You don't pull the lion's tail just to hear it roar." Looks like this "person" didn't like what happened when she pulled the wrong tail. View Replies To: zencat While I'm unsure whether to trust the girl's story, if true, I don't think she deserved a punch in the face. I would rather have seen someone smash the damn picture. View Replies To: zencat Haigh believes "it is the locals" who first took aim at her gallery since it's on a mostly residential street and she hadn't advertised. Though I find that roughing up a woman is despicable beavior, I find it to be a good sign that locals in San Francisco of all places, are totally disgusted with the LEFTISTS and their overplaying of Abu Ghraib. Millions of peaceful Americans have been disgusted and pissed off at the way the major media have been carping on the Abu Ghraib story and their opinions have never been covered. But, let one person act out violently over it and they're right there on the spot, eager to do a story on it. That way they can attempt to paint conservatives or anyone else who supports our men and women in uniform as violent loons. last Disclaimer: Opinions posted on Free Republi... |
