Large Text Size Large Text Size Change text size Gunmen Kill 11 in Iraqi TV Station Attack By Borzou Daragahi, Times Staff Writer 8:37 AM PDT, October 12, 2006 BAGHDAD -- Masked gunmen methodically executed 11 employees of a Baghdad television station this morning, shooting their victims in the station's offices with weapons muffled by silencers. The victims were among at least 24 Iraqis killed in explosions and shootings or found dead as a result of sectarian murders today. One US soldier was also reported killed, a member of the 25th Infantry Division wounded in combat Wednesday along with two other soldiers near Kirkuk. William B Caldwell IV, spokesman for coalition forces, told reporters that insurgent attacks in the capital have increased from 28 a day to 36 over the last 16 days, which coincides with the start of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month of fasting and atonement. With security worsening, the Baghdad government has begun talks with US commanders about lengthening the American stay at bases in the country, an Iraqi spokesman said. Among those killed at the television station was the chairman of the Al Shaabiya channel's board of directors, Abdul Raheem Nasrallah. He also was leader of a small nationalist political party behind the station. Most of those killed in the 7 am attack on the newly launched station were bodyguards. The programming manager clung to life today at a Baghdad hospital with bullet wounds to the neck and mouth, and another man also was wounded. At least some of the killers in the Al Shaabiya killings wore police uniforms and arrived in cars that resembled official police vehicles, raising suspicions the killings were tied to Shiite Muslims militias that allegedly have infiltrated forces of the Ministry of Interior. But Muqtada Sadr, the radical Shiite cleric whose Al Mahdi militia is suspected of involvement in sectarian killings, today denounced such slayings as sacrilegious. "The wrongdoer cannot hide behind what is right, and the title of the Mahdi army is a title for righteousness," he said in a statement. "Those wrongdoers should make use of the Ramadan period, and repent as long as repentance doors are wide open." The killers at the station appeared to have let the two female employees go, but shot all 13 men. Hassan Kamil, the station's manager, found over 100 spent shells on the floor when he arrived an hour after the attack, but none of the bullets had damaged the fragile glass panels in the office. Nearby guards and neighbors told him they heard no gunfire. "That there were no holes or cracks in these glass dividers which means that the executioners are professionals, not ordinary killers," he said. The massacre was the latest attack on media personnel in a country that has become the most dangerous place in the world for journalists. Earlier this week authorities discovered the body of Azad Mohammed, a radio reporter who had been abducted Oct. Government spokesman Ali Dabbagh condemned the killings and said they were under investigation. "The terrorists want to censor the truth of what is actually happening Iraq," he said. But he also acknowledged in a news conference that Iraqi security forces "need more training and experience." In the meantime, Iraqi officials have begun negotiating with US-led forces to extend their presence on bases throughout Iraq, he said. "This is not a new agreement, it's just an extension" of the old agreement, he told reporters.

Iraq Transition Gunmen kill 9 at Sunni TV station in Baghdad Adjust font size: Decrease font Decrease font Enlarge font Enlarge font BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Seventeen people died Thursday in scattered attacks across Baghdad, including nine at a Sunni satellite TV station, police said. In the attack on the Shaabiya satellite channel, gunmen got out of six cars and stormed the station's offices in the eastern neighborhood of Zayuna. An official with the station earlier identified five of the dead as employees and two others as guards. The station has not officially opened and has only aired test broadcasts, the official said. Joel Simon, executive director of the Committee to Protect Journalists, called it "the deadliest single attack against the news media since the Iraq conflict began three years ago." "It's a horrible reminder of why this remains the most dangerous assignment in the world right now for journalists, especially local reporters," Simon said. He urged authorities to "do everything in their power to end the cycle of impunity and bring the perpetrators of these brutal crimes to justice." In other violence Thursday, two bombs exploded within 10 minutes of each other in central Baghdad's Bab al-Shurqi commercial area, killing five people and wounding 10 others, including three police officers, police said. Also in central Baghdad, a motorcycle rigged with explosives went off as it targeted a police patrol, killing three people and wounding 15 others. One of the dead and five of the wounded were police officers in the attack in Qahira Square. Violence appears to have worsened despite US and Iraqi forces' efforts to enforce order amid the daily onslaught of insurgent and sectarian attacks. William Caldwell noted that attacks historically increase by about 20 percent during the holy month of Ramadan, which lasts until late October. "We assume it will still get worse before it gets better," Caldwell said, pointing to a "tremendous spike" in the number of attacks recently. "We expect violence to continue to increase over the next two weeks till the end of Ramadan." Separately, Iraqi police officials found 40 bullet-riddled bodies Wednesday in various neighborhoods throughout the capital, all showing signs of torture. More than 400 bodies have been found in a similar condition in Baghdad this month alone. Police suspect the killings are a result of sectarian violence between Shiite and Sunni Arabs. Nearly 655,000 Iraqis have died as a direct result of the war, mostly through violence or deteriorating health and environmental conditions, US and Iraqi public health researchers said in a controversial study released Wednesday. Full story) President Bush and Iraqi officials strongly disputed the findings. US soldiers killed Two US soldiers were killed Wednesday in separate incidents. One was killed and two others wounded in northern Iraq's Tameem province "as a result of enemy action," according to a military statement Thursday. The dead soldier was assigned to the 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team and is a member of Task Force Lightning, the military said. The other soldier died when a roadside bomb struck his patrol in central Baghdad, the military said. The number of US troops killed in the Iraq war stands at 2,746. Seven American military contractors also have been killed in the war. CNN's Jomana Karadsheh and Mohammed Tawfeeq contributed to this report.
