9/25 Huntington Beach trademarks "Surf City USA" and sues Santa Cruz merchants: http://tinyurl.com/jamv5 (mercurynews.com) \_ just FYI, the Huntington Beach pier which most surfers surf is also the location of the desposing pipe for treated waste water. Granted that those treated waste sewage is colorless and oderless, it's makes me laugh everytime I think about it. \_ You are breathing my fart gas right now. \_ Why can't Santa Cruz just accept that "Surf City USA" does not refer to them? Dean (of Jan & Dean, who wrote the song "Surf City" along with Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys) lives in HB and said he was thinking of HB when he wrote the song years ago. Santa Cruz has fine surf. It's just not "Surf City USA". \_ Interesting, there are two cities named "Surf City," one in NC and one in NJ. \_ And...? |

tinyurl.com/jamv5 -> www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/news/local/states/california/central_coast/15602817.htm?template=contentModules/printstory.jsp New 'Surf City' nastiness HUNTINGTON BEACH DEMANDS STOP TO SANTA CRUZ TEE By Kimra McPherson Mercury News The sharks are circling Santa Cruz again. Huntington Beach lawyers aren't joking around when it comes to enforcing the city's trademarked Surf City USA'' title. They've ordered beachwear shop Noland's on the Wharf to stop selling a shirt that pairs the words Santa Cruz'' and Surf City'' with a little USA'' -- giving the mostly goofy battle over the slogan a nasty new edge. The shop was given until Friday to clear out all of the offending shirts, owner Ginger Noland said. But then something happened that the Huntington Beach folks might not have seen coming: The shirts became a hot item. Noland's marked the shirts down 25 percent after getting the letter and started advertising them as collector's items. On Saturday morning, within one hour of opening the doors, all 85 shirts were gone. The buyers were locals, and they felt they were being robbed of their identity,'' Noland said. Huntington Beach trademarked the Surf City USA'' name earlier this year, after a decade of sniping between the two cities. Now, about 600 people have put their names on a waiting list, hoping that Noland's can get more of the banned shirts from its Paso Robles supplier before the deadline. Jeffree Lee, who occasionally surfs in Santa Cruz, said he'll always believe his city has the only legitimate claim to the Surf City name. And the promise of taunting Huntington Beachers with his contraband shirt was too good to pass up. He may make a trip just to wear his T-shirt,'' Laura Lee said. It's unfortunate they're going this far with it,'' Santa Cruz Councilman Mike Rotkin said. Huntington Beach is pretty much wannabes with high-priced lawyers,'' said Avary, who's been surfing in Santa Cruz for 14 years. Santa Cruz can always fall back on the invention of the wetsuit and the surf board leash, he said. And besides, Avary said, the waves in Huntington Beach just don't measure up. We don't want to do anything illegally,'' said Noland, who has decidedly mixed feelings about being the first shop owner challenged by Huntington Beach. She's hopeful, though, that the two cities will find a way to settle the Surf City battle peacefully. Perhaps, she suggested, it's time for a Super Bowl of surfing.
