By Cho Jin-seo Staff Reporter Korean Air has forbidden the use of Dell and Apple laptop PCs during flight due to the risk of battery explosion. The Korean national flag carrier said yesterday that the ban was put in place from Aug. The batteries, manufactured by Sony, were reported to have caught fire while in use on several occasions. Due to the risk of onboard fire, we are not allowing passengers to use certain brands of laptops on the plane. Safety always comes first for us, a Korean Air spokesperson said, adding they were unsure when the ban would be lifted. The airline prohibited all models of Dell laptops and Apples Powerbook and iBook series, while users can still carry them if they separate the batteries into checked baggage. We have put notices at check-in counters and boarding gates but we dont inspect all carry-on baggage, a gate attendant said. Korean Air is the second airline company in the world to restrict the in-flight use of Dell and Apple laptops. Last month, Australias Quantas announced a similar policy. The US Federal Aviation Administration also is reviewing the general safety of rechargeable lithium batteries, according to the Washington Post. On the new safety policy of Korean Air, An Apple Korea spokesperson Kim Min-seok played it down as a little overreacting, saying none of the US airliners have adopted such rules despite the sales of the laptops being significantly higher in America than in South Korea. Dell Computer also questioned the airlines decision, saying it was unreasonably harsh to restrict all models, including ones that do not use the Sony batteries. They could easily check out whether a laptop uses a Sony battery or other brand instead of banning them all, Dells product manager Shin Won-jun said. We are going to solve this issue by further discussions with Korean Air. Asiana Airlines, the smaller of the two Korean airlines, said it does not plan to follow Korean Airs case, since there has been no international consensus about the issue. It would be difficult for the US authorities to ban only a certain number of brands, the companys spokesperson said. Last month, Dell recalled 41 million laptop batteries after a series of public reports of explosions. Apple also recalled batteries for 18 million of laptops it has sold since 2003 after receiving nine reports of overheating. Apple Korea said that the sales of those models were very low in South Korea.
