More photos OAKLAND - Officers are combing a neighborhood for witnesses today and asking for help to find a suspect who tied up a woman, poured an accelerant on her and set her on fire, police said. The woman, who has not been identified, was listed in critical condition at Highland Hospital early today. Her injuries may require transport to a hospital with a burn unit. A resident of the city's Temescal district told investigators that she heard yelling outside her house shortly after 5 am and saw what she thought was debris on fire at a nearby construction site, Oakland Fire Lt. The woman called the fire department, which sent an engine company to the area of 44th Street and Shafter Avenue. Drayton said the site was the Studio One Arts Center, whose address is listed as 365 45th St. The victim, who was tied up and unconscious, was burned over approximately 70 percent of her body and was taken to Highland Hospital, where she regained consciousness, Drayton said. Officer Roland Holmgren said Oakland police evidence technicians found signs that the victim had been beaten and then tied to a fixed object before being sprayed with an unknown accelerant and set on fire. This is definitely a case I've never seen before and that none of my colleagues has experienced in their careers either," Holmgren said. "It's a heinous, heinous crime to torture (someone like that). We're asking anyone with any information to contact us." Tony Jones in the Oakland police homicide section at 510-238-3821.
