DMA Getting off mailing lists/Mail Preference Service To receive less national advertising mail, you can register for the Direct Marketing Association's (DMA's) Mail Preference Service (MPS). Please note that DMA does not provide marketers with consumer mailing lists or do consumer mailings. Rather, the Mail Preference Service is available to marketers for the sole purpose of removing your name and address from their prospect mailing lists. Members of the DMA are required to use our name-removal service, and other marketers are encouraged to use it. Although you will see a great reduction in the unsolicited mail you receive, not all commercial mail will stop. You may continue to receive mail from companies with which you already do business and from non-DMA member companies that do not use our service. In addition, you may continue to receive mail from local merchants, professional and alumni associations, political candidates and office holders, and mail addressed to "resident/occupant." Please note that MPS applies only to home addresses, not business addresses.
There is a $1 fee, payable by credit card, which verifies your registration and helps to protect our system from fraud. DMA uses secure payment transaction processing to protect your credit card information.

Submit Reset Frequently Asked Questions about MPS and Getting Off Mailing Lists How does the Mail Preference Service work? When you register with DMA's Mail Preference Service, your name and home address are placed on a "do-not-mail" file. DMA members are required to run their list of prospective customers against the file and remove individuals who registered so that they do not send their mailings to these individuals. MPS is also available to non-DMA members, so that all marketers may take advantage of this service, and remove the names of individuals who have already indicated they don't wish to receive unsolicited mail at their homes. The "do-not-mail" file is updated monthly and distributed four times a year (January, April, July, and October), though some mailers choose to receive the file monthly. Your name remains on MPS for five years, after which time you may register again. Typically, you will see the amount of mail you receive begin to decrease approximately three months after your name is entered onto the quarterly file (a little longer if you use the mail-in option). Can I request deletion from a specific company through MPS? Name removal through DMA's service is general in nature. To remove your name from an individual company, contact the company and ask to be put on its internal suppression list so that it does not send additional mail to you. Companies sometimes tell consumers they got their names from DMA and DMA can take their names off the companies' own mailing lists. DMA does not control mailing lists for specific companies, and it does not have mailing lists of consumers (except for the Mail Preference Service, which is used strictly for name removal). Does this service include mail from charitable organizations? DMA nonprofit member organizations are also required to remove prospective donors who have indicated they wish to receive less mail. How can I stop unsolicited sexually-oriented advertising (SOA) from coming to my house? The US Postal Service maintains a list of individuals who do not want to receive sexually-oriented advertising in the mail. The list is provided to companies that mail such promotions so that they can remove those individuals. Contact the US Postal Service for the appropriate form regarding SOA mailings. Why am I receiving mail addressed to my ex-spouse when that person has never lived at this address? In the past, your name and your ex-spouse's name were at the same address, and most likely, when your address changed, your ex-spouse's name was included in that change. You may also wish to check with the three major credit reporting agencies (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion) and any other companies with which you do business, to be sure your ex-spouse's name is no longer part of your current credit record. How can I stop receiving mail addressed to my deceased relative? DMA established another name-removal service to remove contact information of deceased individuals from marketing lists.
When you place an order or make a donation, advise the company or organization not to make your name available to others. How can I just limit credit card applications and other financial-related offers I receive in the mail (and not other types of mailings)? Contact 1-888-5OPT-OUT if you wish to reduce solicitations for credit offers. This is the opt-out number operated by the three major credit reporting agencies (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion); If you receive unsolicited advertising mail at work from companies that also send advertising mail to your home address, let them know you are receiving duplicate promotions and wish to only receive mail at your home address. Mail of a business-to-business nature received at your place of work will not be affected by registration with DMA's Mail Preference Service. DMA does not register business names and addresses and companies that send mail of a business-to-business nature do not use this consumer file.
