8/14 Hate SUVs? Pledge to give out fake SUV tickets for Failure to Care About the Environment: http://www.autoblog.com/2006/06/08/greens-issuing-citations-in-uk http://www.motherjones.com/news/exhibit/2003/01/ma_221_01.html http://www.stopurban4x4s.org.uk/shop.htm#parking \_ just give them out to all car owners. and RIDE BIKE! \_ What the hell? Am I the only person here who lives a car-free bike-based lifestyle for non-environmental reasons? Sure, I think it's nifty that it's good for the environment, but if cars were zero-emissions, I still wouldn't be tempted. Is it really that much of a sacrafice to give up an average of $7000/year down the rathole, hours and hours wasted behind the wheel when you could be working or at home or outside, the legal hassles, the logistical hassles, and the breakdowns? I bike because when I'm on a bike, I'm *happy*, and when I'm in a car I'm *pissed*. The rest is secondary. on a bike, I'm *happy*, and when I'm in a car I'm *pissed*, to save hundreds of thousands of dollars during my working lifetime, for health, to enjoy the outside, to avoid hassle, and lastly because it's good for the environment. Are you environment motivated bikers all going to go buy SUVs if they come out with a zero emissions SUV? Really? \_ You tree-huggers crack me. Keep posting crap like this. Meanwhile 3rd world countries are polluting en masse in ways thousands of SUVs could never do. I said it again - the only pro-enviroment thing a person can do is off themselves. Period. \_ I drive a car because I like the flexibility to change jobs and not worry about having to move where I live. I drive a car because I like the flexibility of having an extra hour a day I didn't spend "trapped on a bike". I'd love a zero-emissions vehicle. \_ Fine. Be your bad self with your car. I was talking to the RIDE BIKE people who at least pose on the motd as if environmental concerns are the main reason they made that choice. I just find that hard to believe, anymore than I believe you drive because you just love smog. \_ There are plenty of environmental concerns related to driving other than emissions. -tom \_ Yeah, I agree. But suppose there were none at all. Would you drive? I wouldn't, and I'm just wondering how many car-free people would or would not drive if it were not for the environmental impact. There is no negative environmental impact that I know of to pounding railroad spikes through my cock, but I'm not going to start doing that any time soon either. \_ Many of the environmental problems of the automobile are inherent to it (traffic and sprawl being two examples). -tom \_ Do you enjoy driving? \_ I did. I drove across the country in three days. -tom \_ And you "Nothing I ever do makes any difference" people annoy the hell out of me. Why do you even bother living? If a person used 10 less gallons of gasoline, that person used 10 less gallons of gasoline. You do it because it's \_ fewer a good thing to do, not because it's going to suddenly change the world. \_ we're so sorry to hear of your passing. -tom \_ Can we do the same to reckless drivers regardless of the type of vehicles they drive? I was almost hit by a van last Friday which changed lane into mine. \_ Dude! that's a good idea. We should have licenses for vehicles, and print little metal signs on them to indicate the number of the license, then we can have some "traffic laws", which allow tickets to be handed out to reckless drivers by "cops". This idea might just go places. \_ You mean I can call the cops and they'll actually do something about it??? I did copy down the license plate number and the time and location, just to submit them to http://www.baaqmd.gov/exhaust/exhaust.asp to give the owner a little annoyance. That's my powerless citizen's way to punish him/her. \_ There is no need for that because demand is down already: http://www.google.com/trends?q=Hummer+h2%2Chummer+h3 Meanwhile demand for eco cars are um, almost the same: Meanwhile demand for eco cars are um, cyclical: http://www.google.com/trends?q=gasoline%2C+hybrid%2C+prius \_ GM does not believe in supply and demand. Why should they? They can always get socialist LOOTER republicans to bail them out using our tax dollars taken by MEN WITH GUNS. \_ If the invisible hand allows GM to do what they are good at doing, then they are deemed the best and the brightest in the free-market and are automatically rewarded as expected. Why do you hate capitalism you commie-pig? \_ I am a capitalist and you are clearly not. When a company fails due to the consistent stupidity of its management, it deserves to FAIL, not get bailed out by the taxpayer. That's socialism. In a capitalist system, GM would have either failed a long time ago or actually started responding to market forces. Of course people like you only call it socialism when you give ten bucks to a poor person. When you give ten billion to a failing corporation you call it capitalism, but that doesn't make it so. GM management are like villains out of an Ayn Rand novel, and so are you if you defend them. \_ Who said GM was the best or brightest at anything? You are definitely not reading the financial news. Your point would be a lot strong (or even exist) if you knew wth you were talking about. |

www.autoblog.com/2006/06/08/greens-issuing-citations-in-uk awareness tickets from an environmental group chiding owners for driving resource-hungry vehicles in cities like London. Advocates say they're warning consumers of the genre's potential effect on future generations, as well as those in the present (read: safety issues). While hardly at the same level of popularity as their US counterparts, UK SUV ownership has skyrocketed in excess of 40 percent in the last half-decade - this, despite increasingly stiff tax hikes that target the vehicles. Although I agree that many people do not need these sorts of vehicles, I am tired of a blanket generalisation. We also use our SUV for extensive outback touring and in rugged mountains. We have tried some lighter SUVs but ended up with bent suspensions and rattling them to pieces. Also, would you target our SUV with a relatively efficient turbo diesel engine and leave alone a V8 Sedan which gets far worse mileage. Seems irrational, if the environment is the focus then focus on inefficient cars and dont target a car because it is a certain body style or you dont like the idea of it. It's hard to destroy pristine wilderness and run over endangered lizards with a car. Nor can you use a car to tow any boat large enough to adequately pollute lakes and slash manatees. I don't actually care about any of that, I can just see someone saying it. Crash compatibility and high headlights are my only beefs with SUVs. I see hybrid faggots driving all the time like their on a NASCAR track, GREAT way to save GAS when you drive like you have a V8! I don't own a SUV, my wife has a CRV if you can call that one. SUV are country vehicles and not for crowded city centres, I fully support farmers using them, they genuinely need them, but city slickers do not need these 'Chelsea Tractors' They get what they deserve. I really want to know what these environmental groups are driving. If they were so concerned with the environment then need to sell their vehicles, leave the modern world, and go live with nature. Well, the "free market" discussion gets a little more complicated when you take into account the marketing muscle in outfits as big as Ford and GM. Large SUVs aren't necessarily the "best" vehicle for many buyers--though I'm sure they are for some--but marketers are very good at convincing a family of three that they "need" an SUV to do all that parading around the wilderness that they can't do in an Accord (though they won't actually do it regardless of vehicle). Traditional, simplified discussions of free-narket economies don't take into account today's commercial media saturation and the increasing number of media outlets. That said, while I personally give a big thumbs-down to oversized, underengineered, underutilized full-sizers like the Suburban and Expedition, I think my fellow environmentally-conscious "advocates" are plagued by a whole other set of misunderstandings. I've heard people rant about RAV4s, Highlanders, and CR-Vs, which is just ridiculous. Not my thing, but if they're using no more fuel than a V6 Camry, what's the problem? The other one that makes me shake my head in shame is when environmentalists go off on SUVs, and then get in their '80s Volvos, VW Buses, or clapped-out diesel Benzes and belch pollutants all the way home. Again, that's only a fraction of the total group, but I hate how stupid they make left-of-center folks like myself look. But then, I don't consider the people who employ these tactics true environmentalists... For them, it's as much a lifestyle statement as it is a push for environmental awareness. Well, I'm glad I got one of the early posts on this one. I use it a dozen times a year to tow my race car and trailer. I use it several more times a year to get through the snow-covered tertiary streets the city WONT plow. Should I get one of these bullshit self-rightous sham tickets? What about when the farmer has to go to city hall for the day? The problem with these tickets and the eco-NAZI's behind them is they ASSUME the owner has no legitimate purpose. This kind of automatic guilt belongs only in facist states, not free nations. Frankly it isn't anyone's business but mine what I drive. If someone wants to drive a little tin can that would lose in a collision with a bicycle, it's fine by me. If I want a serious chunk of steel around me and my family - that's my decision. Re Carlos, what do you mean like how much of the former Soviet Union looks and smells? From my understanding, I haven't ever been there, enforcement of and laws pretaining to the environment are few and far between in Russia. www.motherjones.com/news/exhibit/2003/01/ma_221_01.html ABOUT US Search # # Cleaning Up With Cancer High up on the list of soccer-mom fears are getting breast cancer and failing to properly juggle work and home. Now Eureka has found a way to link -- and some would say exploit -- both these concerns in its "Clean for the Cure" campaign. Buy a WhirlWind Litespeed vacuum -- $200-$300 retail -- # and the company will donate a dollar to the Susan G Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, up to an annual cap of $250,000. And, because "vacuuming is sometimes part of the problem for individuals recovering from breast cancer," Eureka will provide six women a year's worth of cleaning services -- and a Litespeed, presumably for their new maids. Popularized by Avon, American Express, Yoplait, and others, such corporate "pinkwashing" campaigns, in the words of Breast Cancer Action, "exploit the most conventional stereotypes of women -- cooking, cleaning, shopping, wearing makeup -- suggesting that women are more suited for consumerism than political action." For example: Should a woman recovering from surgery or chemo be made to give a damn about dust bunnies? More --> # # # Guerrilla Meter Maids Fake parking tickets are being left under the wipers of SUVs across the country, raising both drivers' blood pressure and # consciousness. In Brooklyn, the NYPD, aka the New York Pranks Division, is citing drivers for violations such as "Increasing US reliance on foreign oil," "Contributing to childhood asthma," "Holing self up in two-ton metal fortress," and "Compensating for lack of manhood." The penalties range from a slap on the wrist -- "SUV must be used for carpools only" -- to the draconian "Blow yourself up (please)." downloadable tickets are the brainchild of Carrie McLaren, who was outraged at seeing SUVs covered with patriotic flags and slogans. "I felt that I needed to make a connection for people between our reliance on oil and our wasteful living, especially after September 11," she says. Other pranksters and activist groups have joined the effort, creating a nationwide protest movement that is ticketing the streets, one SUV at a time. More --> # # # # Thinking Outside The Box Death be not proud, but maybe a little vain is okay. That seems to be the impulse behind WhiteLight's art caskets, customized coffins adorned with scenes such as "Fairway to Heaven," "Gone Fishing," and, for the devoted hair-metal fan, the "Kiss Kasket." Using the same technology that enables advertisers to shrink-wrap photolaminate ads on buses, the 18-gauge plain steel coffins almost appear hand painted. WhiteLight began manufacturing the caskets in 1999 and now offers 37 different designs; the Dallas-based company reports selling 2,500 a year, at approximately $3,000 each. Some critics see art caskets as classic expressions of Me Generation self-absorption and baby boomer narcissism and feel that a funeral focusing on the personality of the deceased is somehow unseemly. But though not everyone would choose to make the journey to the great beyond in a checkered-flag "The Race Is Over" coffin, an art casket can be a meaningful way to have the last word. |
