While gunmen and bombings killed 28 people elsewhere in the country, protesters burned effigies of President Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair in a demonstration rife with symbolism and anger. ADVERTISEMENT Wearing white funeral shrouds to suggest that they are willing to become martyrs, many of the demonstrators said they were ready to die for Hezbollah. The powerful but maverick Shiite cleric, Muqtada Sadr, had called for the demonstration -- the largest of its kind in Iraq since the conflict began in Lebanon three weeks ago. "Let the Sayed order and we are his soldiers," chanted protesters, referring to Sadr. "We came here today despite all the explosions, car bombs, terrorists and Saddamists," Shiite preacher Hazem Ariji told worshippers before the march. "We are not terrified by the airplanes that are now flying over us," pointing to American helicopters hovering overhead. "This million-man demonstration is to support the resistance in Lebanon." There were no reports of violence during the rally in the Sadr City neighborhood. Iraqi government television said the Defense Ministry had approved the demonstration, a sign of public anger over Israel's offensive in Lebanon. |
