UN spokesman says Israeli airstrike made a direct hit on observation
post manned by Indian soldiers, with unspecified casualties. Also
noted were 14 other incidents of "firing" close to this position,
even during the rescue op (probably a "fog of war" incident - unlike
the previous rocketing of vehicles in South Lebabon, where RoE ended
up being "does the car have military age males in it and is it coming
from a Hezbolla town? yes? then blow that fucker up!").
\_ judging from Israel's past behavior, it's more like an warning to
UN than "fog of war:" "you better shut up and stop reporting the
killing Lebanonese civilians, or these kind of 'accident' will keep
happening to any of your observation post."
\_ What past behavior is that? War isn't a video game where every
one on the field is marked red or blue. By your reasoning all
"friendly fire" incidents are intentional acts of murder.
\_ no, only the incidents where the target contacted the
person firing multiple times before they got blown up.
\_ they weren't the target. the hezbollah in the area
using them as a shield were. and again, war isn't a
video game. the orders to stop shelling could have come
down the line but not made it to the guys firing the
shells. but it really doesnt matter and theres no reason
to find out the truth; anything israel does is
automatically intentional and a warcrime, video game, etc.
do you still believe the beach explosion in gaza a number
of weeks ago was israeli artillery?

Israel , said Milos Struger, spokesman for the UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon known as UNIFIL. Annan issued a statement saying two UN military observers were killed with two more feared dead. Earlier, US Ambassador John Bolton said the Security Council was informed that four officers were killed, but he had no other information. Rescue workers were trying to clear the rubble, but Israeli firing "continued even during the rescue operation," Struger said. Condoleezza Rice and Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Saniora. "I am shocked and deeply distressed by the apparently deliberate targeting by Israeli Defence Forces of a UN Observer post in southern Lebanon," Annan said in the statement. Annan said in his statement that the post had been there for a long time and was marked clearly, and was hit despite assurances from Prime Minister Ehud Olmert that UN positions would not be attacked. "I call on the goverment of Israel to conduct a full investigation into this very disturbing incident and demand that any further attack on UN positions and personnel must stop," Annan said in the statement. UN officials said four observers were in the post when the bomb hit, and the building had been destroyed. Two bodies had been recovered and two were unaccounted for, apparently still in the rubble. They spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue. Since Israel launched a massive military offensive against Lebanon and Hezbollah guerrillas July 12, an international civilian employee working with UNIFIL and his wife have been killed in the crossfire between Israeli forces and Hezbollah guerrillas in the southern port city of Tyre. Five UNIFIL soldiers and one military observer have also been wounded, Struger said. A UN observer, wounded during exchange of fire between Israel soldiers and Hezbollah guerillas, is carried by Israeli soldiers after being evacuated from southern Lebanon near the northern Israeli village of Rehaniya Sunday July 23, 2006. The Italian chiefs of staff office identified as an Italian army captain the UN observer seriously wounded Sunday between Hezbollah guerillas and Israeli troops in south Lebanon. Roberto Punzo was at a hospital in Haifa where he was taken by helicopter by the Israeli military.
