Wednesday's letters to the editor Mayor, cooperate As a resident of Lansing, I support the budget passed by the majority of City Council; I challenge the mayor to put aside his differences, step up and be the leader he was elected to be and work with council. We voted for the council and the mayor, and expect him to keep his promise to work with the council. Demeaning council members in public accomplishes nothing and, quite frankly, doesn't speak to strong, effective leadership. We have a proven track record with most of our council members. It is the mayor's turn to prove his words during the campaign mean something, and that he is willing to work with the council and leaders in the region.
Kevin R Webb Lansing Court upheld law The LSJ should do two minutes of research before publishing an editorial ("Impaired", June 26). within this state if the person has in his or her body any amount of a controlled substance listed in schedule 1 under section 7212 of the public health code." Marijuana is specifically listed as a schedule 1 controlled substance. The LSJ asks, "Any citizen - or lawmaker - remember ever voting for that?" Yes, a majority of both houses and then the governor signed it into law. All the Michigan Supreme Court did was uphold the statute as passed. Johns Islam or death I read Le Roy Barnett's letter ("Muslims, speak up," June 26) about Muslims' opinion on Abdul Rahman's conversion to Christianity. Islam is not only a religion, it is a complete way of life. The Quran and prophet Muhammad's words and practical application of Quran in life cannot be changed. Islam is a guide for humanity, for all times, until the day of judgment. It is forbidden in Islam to convert to any other religion. Islam is being embraced by people of other faiths all the time. They should know they can embrace Islam, but cannot get out. Please do not ask us Muslims to pick some rules and disregard other rules. Nazra Quraishi East Lansing Patience at an end As I write this, Israel has gone into the Gaza Strip to seek justice for her people. The Palestinian people have again proven to the world they cannot run their small patch of earth without making war on their neighbors. Perhaps it is time for Israel to stop these people from breeding permanently! Israel has been very patient with Palestine, but now is the time to put an ultimatum to Hamas. If Hamas wants to be treated as a real nation, then they must seek peace with Israel. Working together, they would have such great possibilities. If this can't be achieved, than Israel should annex the West Bank and Gaza, build their wall around Palestine, and watch as the Palestinians kill each other off. Paul R Pirrotta Holt Paper isn't traitor Some have accused the New York Times of treason for publishing a story about a secret government program to monitor bank transactions. Second, they're going through everyone's bank records, not just al-Qaida's. The collection of such private information provides this administration an enormous opportunity for mischief. They could, for example, link donations to Democrats to tax audit lists. Visits to politically troublesome Web sites might bar you from flying. We don't really know why the administration wants to keep this from the rest of government, and that's the problem. There may be treason here, but not by the New York Times. Don Green Lansing Advocates, go fight Letters from Dan Waun and Ed Mills (June 27) prompted me to respond. Both advocated continued or additional US troop intervention in Iraq. If the aforementioned feel such a need to send more good citizens into a war zone, perhaps they should sign up and lead the charge themselves! They could stop in Washington and pick up our chicken-hawk president and "dead-eye" Dick Cheney, both of whom opted out of fighting the communist insurgency in southeast Asia many years ago. We were led into this invasion by false intelligence and deceit perpetrated by those two and their ilk. If this war is as important to our freedom as these guys think, why haven't Jenna, Barb Jr. and any Cheney offspring duked it out with the "terrorists" in Iraq or Afghanistan? Waun and Mills should beware - those who sleep with a dog wake up with fleas. Tom Sampson Lansing Change senators In response to Lyle Birchman's June 27 letter, "Senator snubs," I was also disturbed to see Sen. This time, it was at a Grand Ledge parade (different parade, same import). The flawed trade policies of the federal government have caused the exodus of good-paying Michigan jobs. She slaps the people of this state in the face by draping the American flag over her foreign import. The question I have for Birkholz is this: Is the flag that you've wrapped yourself in atop your foreign import made in China? Let's bring a dose of reality back to the 24th Senate District. Joan Bauer not only works hard, but does so quietly and effectively to get things done, often behind the scenes in committees where dialogue happens and ideas get shaped. Her energy is high, but not laced with ideological zeal. That is one lesson to take from her record of public service. Mary Ann Olson Lansing Don't blame biz I was disappointed to read Carolyn Smalley's June 26 letter, "Hate is hate," in reference to her experience at Magdalena's Tea House. What's more, I also respect her contention that hate language is wrong even if it is not focused on a minority group. To tacitly imply Magdalena's promotes an atmosphere of hatred is a gross inaccuracy. The tea house and all who work there are as thoughtful, kind and tolerant of their fellow creation as any group of people can be. As a parent and a Lansing business owner, I have come to appreciate Magdalena's, not just for its fare, but even more so for the warmth workers share with all of their guests. Scott Harris Holt Image inappropriate If you are trying to focus on the problem of stray dogs on Ingham county streets, you don't publish a picture of a friendly shepherd mix. You use a picture of a pit bull or a rottweiler, like the one who strayed into the back yard of my daughter's home in Lansing, when he was searching for food, as she was planting roses next to her garage.
