6/15 A little old, but I'm sure you all want to know about ATI's new
video card optimized for ASCII gaming.

\_ I know it was satire, but you could do that with pixel shaders.

5/20 Linux question. my laptop has a Nvidia 8400M GS chipset. For a
while I was excited about the fact that Nvidia actually has
Linux driver for such. But after I used it for about 2-3
weeks, I realize that this Nvidia driver is the reason why my
Ubuntu is keep crashing. I would like to swtich to a

        I got a single number "1"
        what does this mean?
\_ I think this refers to whether you've got any non-open-source drivers
           loaded, but I'm not sure.

5/26 I seem to recall that ATI was going to open-source it's drivers
does anyone know if the ATI drivers for Linux still suck?
\_ Do the drivers suck or are they just binary only?
        \_ Last I checked (~6 months), they didn't support rotation, and I
couldn't find any indication that they planned to do so. That's
the only thing I really care about, so I can't say if they suck

8/2 Does anyone know if ATI or NVIDIA is currently trouncing the other?
I use Linux, so I pretty much only see NVIDIA around, but it seems like
people must still be buying ATI...
\_ What do you use the nvidia stuff for in Linux?
\_ TuxRacer (AKA Planet Penguin Racer)

\_ ATI has decent support. Driver/sw updates are easy to get.

1/11 Anyone knows what happens to Apple's chipset design team
now that the Intel Macs are official?
\_ Who says Apple still wouldn't be using their own chipsets for
Intel chips? And wouldn't it be likely that the x86 version of
Mac OS X would require, say, an Apple chipset to prevent it from

The @ is attacked by a herd of speedy and fearsome q's in brilliant four-color ASCII graphics. "The VT100 standard has been around for years, but there really hasn't been a video card company willing to make a card for it," said ATI Director of Product Development, Carlos Neale. "I really think more card and gaming companies will jump on the text bandwagon now that we've thrown our support behind it." Neale added that he felt that a frames-per-second (fps) rate of 1000 in Nethack was possible with the card. The 9500 ASC is very similar to the 9500 PRO, but it has an added ASCII Processing Unit (APU) on the card to handle the complex calculations needed to render creatures like the A and the M in Nethack. com, a site dedicated to text based games, was ecstatic, "I love this new card. I mean you haven't really Nethacked until you've passed the kHz barrier." Harville's review of the card was one word: "ASCIIcking!" Dedicated Nethacker, Byron Wilkes, who has ascended twelve times, said, "I was frightened when the band of o's attacked me. ATI also announced a card under development which would support Unicode gaming. Do we make a card that supports Unicode gaming before there are games, or will the games appear after we make the card. We hope this announcement gets the game giants in gear." Nvidia later announced that the GeForce 4900 MX-ASCII would be available in the next few months.
