6/11 I don't have cable, does anyone know how I can watch the World Cup? I pretty much just want to catch the US and Korean games. -jrleek \_ Do you chant "Dae Han Min Gook" extremely loudly? \_ If I have to. -jrleek \_ Local sports bar? Friend's house? Church gathering? \_ I watch the games on ABC, can't you? \_ No, I live in Livermore. I can't get anything but 2 Spanish stations. Watching it on the Spanish channel might not be a bad idea... I was really hoping to be able to get a stream online. -jrleek \_ I hear you can download "TVants" and watch ESPN online with it though I haven't tried it myself. I don't know if that would have all games. Also supposedly you can watch the BBC stream. It is supposed to be limited to the UK, but: http://www.ghacks.net/2006/06/06/how-to-view-the-football-worldcup-online/#more-542 \_ Try what the end of this article says: http://www.ghacks.net/2006/06/09/worldcup-preparations Or maybe try using a proxy to access BBC online streams. I think it's talking about this: http://www.tvunetworks.com/downloads/index.htm \_ Hey, thanks. At least in my test, tvuplayer works pretty well. We'll see for the World Cup. Addendum: Works GREAT. I saw most of the Aus vs Japan game this morning, but missed the last 15 minutes where Austrailia come back from 0 to 1 to win 3 to 1. !@#$ \_ What about downloads? Who can watch a game at 6am? |

www.ghacks.net/2006/06/09/worldcup-preparations Worldcup Preparations Friday, June 9th, 2006 The football worldcup is starting today and it surely is going to be the biggest sports event of this year. We all know that some companies are going to stream the worldcup live on the internet for their countrymen. I suggest the stable version but experienced users could use the beta version as well. Install pplive on your system, make sure you chose english as your language. The options should appear at first start and you can change some settings like ports, connections and the like. Select Play from the menu and you see a channel list on the left, probably lots of garbage if you don't have the appropriate fonts installed on your system. The important channels are the following: CCTV1, CCTV5 and probably Shanghai Sports All three seem to be showing all games of the football worldcup live. boxtobox website for a complete schedule of the games and which station is broadcasting it. I suggest you take a look at this tool if you can't watch a game in tv. June 9th, 2006 at 4:03 pm If you are from Britain you could view the games from the BBCs webpage. Maybe a media company is offering the same if you are living in a different country. If not you could try and find a proxy that is located in Britain to view the live stream there. There are also lots of live tickers out there that give you information about standings and events. Click on the first plus and you see CCTV-5 which is one of the stations that shows the live games. If you move your mouse over a channel you see a preview image and a time table what they are showing. June 9th, 2006 at 6:11 pm how did you enable the sound hmmm ? you click on the FREE button, wait the time it displays, enter the verification letters and click download from.. please wait" then after w=a while it says "player cannot be initialised, please check internet connection. Any suggestions as I seem to have a good connection to the net. Take a look at my worldcup preparations article for a working method that involves download a software. You will be able to see the matches live with english commentary. Perhaps I can get my security admin to open that port up. even if I can't enjoy it just yet, it's gratifying to know that there's a way to get the feed. June 9th, 2006 at 7:47 pm If you haven't figured out yet, go with ESPN2 (Low) unless you have a T1 or faster connection. I was watching ESPN2 and bitching about how it breaks up every minute or so. Hopefully this year's tournament will provide some corkers worth adding to this collection. If you're in a timezone when games are on when you should be working, then check out this guide on gHacks to watching the games online Share and Enjoy:These icons link to social bookmarking sites where readers can share and discover new web pages. June 9th, 2006 at 11:14 pm to those of u in the US, try getting univision TV channel. they provide free terrestrial signals and they are broadcasting all the games live. i just finished watching the inaugaural game using a TV tuner card on my PC. June 10th, 2006 at 7:49 am hi, have downloaded pplive, when i select any channel i get the preview image and details, it shows some small kb of downloading but no buffering and nothing seems to happen, have tried many channels. June 10th, 2006 at 8:44 am steve I recieved the best results with tuvplayer, just download, install, select ESPN2 for example and you're ready to go. It streams CCTV5 as well, so if ESPN2 is not showing a match cctv5 will. June 10th, 2006 at 10:58 am Martin, Thanks for the info when I try to download the player it comes up with the message that the download was invalid. Direct-links last a few minutes for free users and a few days for premium-users. You requested this download-session from a different IP than yours. June 10th, 2006 at 11:18 am I have the same problem with rapidshare as Rob. BTW how come I can't find a refrence to this program anywhere on google? June 10th, 2006 at 11:50 am Guys I managed to sort out the download in the end but I bit the bullet and got the premium membership for a month on the website. Only one problem now the buffering goes up to about 90% on ESPN 2 and then comes all the way back down again resulting in break up of the channel. June 10th, 2006 at 11:54 am Just a quick question on the channel list I can actually get ABC/ESPN2 (low) to work but is showing ABC at the moment. Will it change accross to ESPN 2 eventually when the world cup matches start ? June 10th, 2006 at 3:17 pm Ok I can connect with the channels but after about 4mins it comes up with the message that the TVU player has encoutered a problem and must now shut down. June 10th, 2006 at 3:24 pm Put in a search for win rar free download. Download this and use this to extract the info from the downloaded TVU player file 69. June 10th, 2006 at 4:46 pm 66: Rob I don't know why this is happening to you. If not you should check your firewall, maybe it blocks communication somehow. I right clicked the TVU player icon on the desktop went to properties, clicked the compatibility tab and then selected it to run with windows 2000. One question I did have is if there is anyway to increase the buffering %. June 12th, 2006 at 6:51 am Chris I'am not aware of any codecs that are needed. You are the first one that has problems running the software. I only have normal codes installed, like xvid, divx and the like. tid=1673411&extra=p age%3D4 for how to get CCTV5 streaming at 814K. You might have to change your DNS server (thru the Control Panel) to get this to work. It breaks up quite a bit for a minute, then smooths out. I tried switching to win2k compatibility, but switched back to native (xp), and can see video now. www.ghacks.net/2006/06/06/how-to-view-the-football-worldcup-online/#more-542 How to view the football worldcup online Tuesday, June 6th, 2006 Some tv stations, like the BBC in Britain, will provide their fellow countrymen with an opportunity to watch the football world cup 2006 in germany live in a streamed version from their webpages. their webpage that "The service will be available to UK broadband users and will mirror terrestrial and interactive coverage." I assume it is free of charge but maybe my loyal British readers could enlight me how they plan on streaming the content. They most likely will scan your IP and lookup your country from it. That means people from outside Britain won't be able to view the matches on the BBC homepage. As you all know, there are always ways to circumvent country checks, here is the one I suggest. ABC who did not allow their series to be viewed by people from outside the USA and the method that I described back then is still valid for the World Cup (or any other streaming content on the internet). But this time I want to introduce a faster method which should work most of the time for you. Remember this IP, you will come back to this site and check the IP again with a proxy enabled. Search google using strings like "country proxy list", "england proxy list" and the like. All show a table with proxies including the country the proxy is hosted. Browse for proxies that are located in the same country as the content provider of the streams. Select Connection Settings and select Manual Proxy Configuration. Add the IP to the HTTP Proxy Row and enter the Port in the field next to it. See if the page loads fast and the IP is different from the one the website displayed earlier when you checked your real IP. First, the proxy is working (assuming it does not take ages to load pages) and second your are surfing relativly anonymous. The BBC website will check your IP and detect that you are coming from Britain and display their treasures for you. Note that it is still possible to detect your real IP by the means of Java for example. If you have questions let me know, I'll be glad to help out. The great advantage of this method is that you can check and use proxies no matter what operating system you are using. A disadvantage is that it could take a while until you find a fast working proxy that is located in the country you need. If you have troubles try charon to verify proxies, the how to is available from my ABC article. June 6th, 2006 at 4:36 pm The Beeb have some very advanced measures for detecting where you are viewing from. During the regular footie season I tried to listen to the BBC Radio Five Live audio feed. This is only available for UK listeners and after hours of fiddling around with UK proxies I never did get to listen. I expect the same sort of thing for the broadband broadcast. ok, auf den ersten blick relativ sinnfrei, weil im deutschen free-tv eh mehr spiele bertragen werden als bei der tante (ganz zu schweigen davon, dass der orf alle spiele live hat). aber wer weiss, wofr man solches wissen mal brauchen kann. Not sure HOW the BBC are doing it, but I tested it on their horse racing videos. It says about needing to change to high quality in the preferences page, then goes to load it, and says UK only. This is with a working, valid, anonymous proxy setup for both Opera and Realplayer... June 9th, 2006 at 7:13 am On the above BBC page it says:Q: Why is broadband viewing online restricted to UK residents? A: The main reason is because the sports bodies, who hold the rights to events.... A: We determine your location via the IP (Internet Protocol) address of your connection. From that, we can tell whether you are in the UK or not and whether you are entitled to see the content. June 9th, 2006 at 9:38 am The problem is that the BBC uses a list of UK broadband operators who have registered with them, so unless your IP address (ie that of the proxy) is registered with them it won't work (according to BBC FAQs). June 9th, 2006 at 4:34 pm Yeah, I'm having the same problems as drood. Already tried it with three anonymous proxys that were working (took me to uk's google site automatically) but the bastards won't allow it. June 9th, 2006 at 5:11 pm I followed the instructions, but I cannot even surf a regular website using a UK proxy. I'm trying to surf from work and I usually use another proxy to get around our filter/firewall. does anyone have a line on ANY free english-language audio broadcast? As a corollary, does anyone else find it amusing that spanish, portuguese, and german speakers enjoy several live and FREE online broadcasts, but that the "contractual rights" mentioned by the BBC (and ESPN360's ridiculous server-provider limitations) severaly restrict participation by net-users in the world's largest economic markets? June 9th, 2006 at 6:18 pm PPLIVE site link above has been updated - it says "Download the latest Tuvplayer version from Rapidshare and select the channel ESPN2, they show the games live and it's working.. Without a TV at my disposal, if I want to watch any of the World Cup games online, apparently there are ways to trying to get it to work. Apparently the BBC is showing some of the games online, but you have to have a British ISP in order for it to work -- in other words that old proxy trick won't work anymore. I tried checking Australia's SBS and Germany's Deutsche Welle and France's RFI to see if I could find any online video feeds, or even an audio feed but nothing. RFI *might* have some online feeds, particularly for the African games. So after spending over an hour scouring the Internets for live World Cup media, I'm left with the tried and true solution : BitTorrent. I'm downloading today's England match and yesterday's German match as I type. June 11th, 2006 at 5:02 am Madison, we're also stealing from ESPN, not that it matters. no matter the source, when leisure is at stake Americans assiduously display the ideals of democracy. I may not be a football fan, but it still gives me a kick to point you football fanatics to this article at Wired. net, for one, offers a workaround using public proxies to fool the BBC into thinking you're in the UK Caveat: Wired News didn't test this, so if you try it you're on your own. June 11th, 2006 at 4:21 pm We're round going in circles here. Ok for those of you who are happy with pplive and torrent, I'm happy for you - I use them myself. OK NOW FOR THOSE OF US who want to watch the BBC streaming because it has the highest quality commentary - unlike ESPN - in English, can we please have some advice on getting the BBC streams. It seems that not only do you need a proxy but that you need a proxy from one of the ISPs that are registered with the BBC. June 11th, 2006 at 4:58 pm Cheers to four-aces getting us back on track! I'd add this addendum: does anyone know how to get Peercast to work on a Mac? Also, sans Peercast, any new *SUCCESSFUL* mac developments? How about getting either Bootcamp or Parallel to function? June 11th, 2006 at 5:51 pm Stealing from the BBC blah blah blah. A)who cares b) I'm a Brit in Japan and I'm gagging for some commentary that doesn't break my eardrums. June 12th, 2006 at 6:51 am How to view the football worldcup online/El mundial en vivo por internet!
