6/1 Link 1: Japanese people are not satisfied with their sex lives.
Link 2: Japanese people don't have very much sex
Link 3: Japanese population is decreasing. The Justice Ministry
thinks this is bad and tries to improve the odds
                by relaxing immigration rules.

"Lovers in Japan are the least amorous, having sex just 45 times
         a year.
\_ "How the research was conducted: Based on the number of
respondents from 41 countries, the 2005 Durex Global Sex Survey
is the largest sexual health research project of its kind in the
world. Now in its ninth year, the survey has quadrupled in size
since its launch and covers 41 countries - newcomers this year
included Indonesia and Chile. This is the fourth year that this
survey has been carried out via the http://durex.com website and
responses have been analysed by sex and age to give an in-depth
and truly global picture of sexual attitudes and behaviour."
So, only people who were familiar with durex condoms and who visited
the website and filled out the survey were selected. Can you say
           "skewed sample"? Knew you could.

\_ Those "foreigner quotas" are racist.
\_ "With its falling birth rate, Japan is hardly alone among advanced
countries. South Korea's fertility rate fell to a record low of

the average in developed countries of 1.6."
Well, of course the fertility rate is down; they're using durex
condoms and answering internet surveys rather than having sex.

Adobe Acrobat) Researchers surveyed more than 27,000 middle-aged and elderly people worldwide about their sex lives Researchers surveyed more than 27,000 middle-aged and elderly people worldwide about their sex lives. A groundbreaking international sex survey reveals that couples in Western countries are the most sexually satisfied, while countries in the East appear to be less satisfied. University of Chicago researchers surveyed more than 27,000 middle-aged and elderly people worldwide about their sex lives, regardless of sexual orientation. Alex Chadwick speaks with Edward Laumann, the University of Chicago sociologist who conducted the study. Some of the study's highlights: Researchers surveyed sexual well-being in 29 nations, including countries they call "male-centered sexual regimes" where men generally control the sexual conduct of women, and "gender-equal sexual regimes" that emphasize equality between sexual partners. The survey polled 13,882 women and 13,618 men aged 40 to 80. Only 49 percent of men and 32 percent of women indicated that sex was extremely or very important to their overall life. Men who had multiple sex partners were less likely to be satisfied with their relationships, but more likely to believe that sex was important. Men report higher levels of sexual satisfaction than women, regardless of nation. Asian countries all reported low levels of sexual satisfaction and moderate to low levels of satisfaction with their relationships and the importance of sex. Israeli women placed the highest value on the importance of sex -- the lowest score came from women in Taiwan. Among men, Brazil scored the highest and Thailand the lowest. Overall, people in Austria are most satisfied with their sex lives, and Japanese are least satisfied.

TOKYO, Japan (Reuters) -- Japan's fertility rate -- the average number of children a woman bears in her lifetime -- fell to an all-time low of 125 in 2005, the health ministry said on Thursday, the latest sign of the threat to the world's second-biggest economy from an ageing, shrinking population. Japan's population declined last year for the first time since 1945. Experts had long predicted the shift, but it came two years earlier than forecast. "It's an extremely tough figure," Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi told reporters, adding the need to cope with the problem. "It will become one of the most important items on the policy agenda." Chief Cabinet Secretary Shinzo Abe, a front-running candidate in the race to succeed Koizumi when he steps down in September, highlighted the consequences of the low birth rate. "The trend towards having fewer children will have grave impact on the economy and society as it slows economic growth, increases the burden for social security and taxes, and reduces the vitality of regional society," he told a news conference. Demographers say a rate of 21 is needed to keep a population from declining. Policy makers who once shied away from proposals to boost the birth rate for fear of echoing wartime nationalist propaganda have become more outspoken in recent years about the search for solutions. "At the same time that we come up with appropriate support to enable people to raise children and work, I think it is also important to make people aware of the value of families and the of the joys of having children," Abe said. With its falling birth rate, Japan is hardly alone among advanced countries. South Korea's fertility rate fell to a record low of 108 in 2005, well below the global average of 26 children and the average in developed countries of 16 Japan's slumping birth rate has been attributed to long working hours for both men and women, the high cost of putting children through a highly competitive school system, and barriers to women advancing in the workplace while raising kids. Japanese women tend to quit work after giving birth and only return to their jobs -- often on a part-time basis -- when their children start school. The latest drop in the fertility rate, which first fell below 200 in 1975, will likely put pressure on the government to review its social welfare policies including pensions and medical care, since officials had assumed the fertility rate would bottom out at 131 and then recover, Kyodo news agency said. Immigration could be one way to deal with the shrinking population, but many Japanese worry that an influx of foreigners would lead to higher crime rates and other social ills. The head of a Justice Ministry panel recommended earlier this week that the country limit the proportion of foreigners to 3 percent of the population, compared with 12 percent now.
