NahnCee Mon May 29, 2006 11:19 PM French youths clash with police in Paris suburbs Around a hundred youths clashed with police during the night after setting fire to cars and rubbish bins in a Paris suburb that was the scene of violent riots last November, a local official said on Tuesday. The youths began burning cars in reaction to a police operation in which a young man was arrested several hours earlier. Officials said they did not yet know how many cars had been burned. Next they'll be forced to kidnap another Jewish person to hold for ransom while they torture him to death over a period of three weeks, while the Real French stand around scratching their heads in bewilderment.
Bombs_Away_LeMay Mon May 29, 2006 06:25 PM President Jacques Chirac's ability to laugh at himself is being tested to the limit by a film that reduces his colourful 40-year career to French farce. The new film portrays Jacques Chirac as a buffoon-like character - "cynical but naive at the same time".

Bombs_Away_LeMay Sun May 28, 2006 07:01 PM The European Commissions Eurobarometer has found that fewer than half EU citizens describe membership of the union as a good thing. The disclosure came as foreign ministers gathered at a monastery near Vienna for talks on the EUs future after its proposed constitution, ratified by 15 states, was vetoed in France and the Netherlands last year. The one-off Eurobarometer survey spoke to 24,700 people and found deep-rooted scepticism and even hostility, not just for the idea of political integration but towards membership of the EU itself. When asked whether having such a constitution would be the most helpful for Europe, 36% of Belgians agreed. Looks like Europeans have finally woken up to the heinous dangers posed by the tyranny in Brussels. Took the euros fucking long enough, but better late than never...

Garnier, one of L'Oreal's top brands, has been accused of instructing an employment agency to hire only slim women of the "BBR type" as hostesses to hand out leaflets and samples of shampoos for a supermarket promotion campaign in 2001. "BBR" was shorthand for "Bleu Blanc Rouge" - meaning blue, white and red, the colours of the French flag. Typical of the image the company is accused of wanting to promote is that of the actor Virginie Ledoyen, a model for L'Oreal until last year. Prosecutors have argued that "BBR" is a well-known employers' code for excluding people of Arab, African or Asian origin. "White people might be frightened to have an Arab or a black person explaining a product to them and even demonstrating it to them by trying to massage their scalp," Thomas said. "Nobody is frightened of white women, though, and it has been demonstrated that they have more of an impact as sellers than anyone else."

Mimi_et_Foufou Sat May 27, 2006 10:29 AM The Conseil superieur is the top-level policy arm of Quebec's language bureaucracy and advises the government on steps that need to be taken to protect French. The better-known Office de la langue franc, aise and the Commission de la protection de la langue franc, aise enforce the provincial language law. And despite intensive efforts aimed at francisation, roughly four in 10 immigrants still don't end up following government-sponsored French courses.
Timbeaux Fri May 26, 2006 09:52 PM For now, the French seem to have adopted a policy of allowing potential militant communities to operate in France -- as long as they do not conduct attacks. This has led to the establishment of several militant networks in the country. As militants in other European countries are increasingly harried by tougher laws and efforts to disrupt their activities, however, they could find the French environment more favorable for operations.
Bombs_Away_LeMay Fri May 26, 2006 05:52 PM Working in Moscow in Soviet days, it used to be fun to spot when Pravda and other state organs doctored photographs of the Kremlin leadership. The censors reached for the airbrush if a picture included someone embarrassing or who had been written out of history. Today, Le Figaro, the venerable Paris daily, has been caught red-handed fiddling the portrait of a disgraced Japanese banker. Guess who has been painted out of the original photograph?

poz_2000 Fri May 26, 2006 04:33 AM The enmity between France's fiercest political rivals Nicolas Sarkozy and Jacques Chirac has extended to their horses. The two horses, appropriately named Sarkozy and Chirac when they were presented to the politicians on recent trips to Mali, had to be forcibly separated after a violent kick-fight in a stable, it was reported yesterday. Mr Sarkozy, the interior minister and head of the ruling UMP party, was given a magnificent bay steed from a regional governor during a visit in 2003. A few months later, President Chirac received a grey, dappled horse from his Malian counterpart, Amadou Toumani Toure.

poz_2000 Thu May 25, 2006 06:36 AM France's railways, traditionally a source of national pride, are falling into a ruinous state, according to a leading expert. Britain has saved most of its network through an "enormous catch-up effort," but vast tracts of the French system are being ruined by a short-sighted repair policy, said Robert Rivier, a Swiss professor. Mr Rivier, the author of a damning audit on the railway ordered by the French government, said track needed to be renewed and ageing or underused lines closed, rather than patching up infrastructure.
