Printable version Senior US Democrat Bentsen dies Lloyd Bentsen Lloyd Bentsen had a distinguished career in the US Senate Lloyd Bentsen, a former US senator who served as President Bill Clinton's first treasury secretary, has died at the age of 85. Mr Bentsen, a moderate Democrat from Texas, chaired the powerful Senate Finance Committee from 1987 to 1992. He was a high-profile vice-presidential nominee for his party in the 1988 presidential election. He is perhaps best remembered for putting down his Republican counterpart Dan Quayle in a televised debate. In the debate, the 41-year-old Mr Quayle said he had as much Congressional experience as John Kennedy did when he ran for president in 1960. Mr Bentsen, then 67, replied scornfully: "Senator, I knew Jack Kennedy.
