ricks_place Former hostage Jill Carroll strongly disavowed statements she had made during captivity in Iraq and shortly after her release, saying Saturday she had been repeatedly threatened. In a video, recorded before she was freed and posted by her captors on an Islamist Web site, Carroll spoke out against the US military presence. Her editor has said three men were pointing guns at her at the time. "During my last night in captivity, my captors forced me to participate in a propaganda video. I was living in a threatening environment, under their control, and wanted to go home alive. So I agreed," she said in a statement read by her editor in Boston. "Things that I was forced to say while captive are now being taken by some as an accurate reflection of my personal views.
View Replies To: ricks_place Are you going to believe me or your lying eyes? Too bad the interpreter died, but if the media concentrate on the reporter and not the loss in human life, it all has a happy ending.
View Replies To: ricks_place IMO this whole thing was staged, she should be arrested for the death of her translator, she's been living in Iraq for 3 years and I believe she is a terrorist sympathizer, I do not believe her latest statements were made under duress. yet we have all seen the videos where she's practically in tears because she has been threatened with beheading.
View Replies To: ricks_place All I know is this retraction will not count in the bureaucracy/mass. University studies and policy making will be based on the first statements. The media should retract the whole thing, but they will not. In fact they should have waited before publishing this crap. It's a catch22 double trap game: The dupes get justified The nondupes are told to appologize. End of story of the operation: the nondupes are discredited and the dupes can still go on not appologizing. This is a perfect leftwing orchestration anyway you put it.
Ms Carroll's statement sounds just like Vince Foster's "suicide note". There isn't enough detail in it to trust that it was written by her. Like nothing about the nice furniture and the shower, etc. Damage control in reaction to the reaction home of which she couldn't have been aware.
View Replies To: ricks_place I believe Jill Carroll and if I had been in the same circumstances, I would likely have said anything to get away from my captors. I have heard callers to various talk radio shows claim they could never be compelled to speak out against America and the war effort and that they would rather die first. I am fiercely loyal to America and a strong supporter of our fight against terrorism, but in a circumstance like Carroll's, it is a far wiser course to do whatever it takes to be freed first and then to clear the air with the truth once freedom has become a reality.
Just heard a statement from one of her friends saying Jill will more than likely be going back to Iraq, well, imo, if that's the case, why are we spending $$$$ to bring her home?
View Replies To: ricks_place I have no idea what the truth is. But I know I would have said almost anything to avoid getting my head cut off, or a bullet put in it.
View Replies To: rockabyebaby Just heard a statement from one of her friends saying Jill will more than likely be going back to Iraq If this is true, then I would be swayed towards this whole shabang being staged. If you had guns pointed at you with threats of death, then when you get out you point out that what you said was for the purpose of saving your life, this would pi$$ off the captors.

I think, notice I said think, I would be willing to refuse to do as they say to a point, unless I was broken by continuous torture. However, I also think with the threat of beheading with a dull sword, I'd pretty much cave. You can't watch the Nick Berg video and not feel that way. I challenge everyone to watch it to put barbarism in the right perspective.
View Replies To: nuconvert I am inclined to believe her too. So far, I haven't seen a shred of evidence to support the allegations that she staged her abduction.
View Replies To: ricks_place The Yahoo article cited above is a story containing excerpts from the Jill Carroll statement. Here's something they left out: "Things that I was forced to say while captive are now being taken by some as an accurate reflection of my personal views. The people who kidnapped me and murdered Alan Enwiya are criminals, at best. They put me, my family and my friends - all those around the world - who have prayed so fervently for my release - through a horrific experience. I was, and remain, deeply angry with the people who did this."
SITE=721 9&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&CTIME=2006-04-01-16-34-49 Not sure how this will play out, but now that she is safely outside Iraq, she may reveal a lot of very damaging information about the nature of Iraqi society and politics; information she knew but kept silent about so she could live and work there. At the least, I'm sure any romantic notions she may have had about the Middle East, its culture, and its peoples have now been thoroughly dispelled.
View Replies To: rudabaga They lose face if they believe her now. There are too many on this forum that give no room for people to change, and learn. They already indicted her on her first statement while still a captive. She needed to be waving a US flag and screaming for the death of her captors while her captors were still present.
View Replies To: ricks_place I'm recalling another instance when Americans were forced to say things under duress, but they managed to let the world know their true feelings (the men of the USS Pueblo).
I am in no way able to judge the choices someone has to make in captivity like that. I wish she would have clarified her statements sooner (like yesterday), but at least the record has been set straight. I wonder if the Arab media is going to broadcast her correction?
View Replies To: sonsofliberty2000 Ya, it is pretty crazy. It also amazing there are so many here that don't seem to realize that she was a hostage during the earlier video statements she made... If they threatened to slowly cut my head off while I was in their control I'd believe them.
View Replies To: E=MC2 I'm recalling another instance when Americans were forced to say things under duress, but they managed to let the world know their true feelings (the men of the USS Pueblo). Yeah, but the military is trained to give covert signals. For example, like the soldier who was forced to pose with Hillary Clinton. Do you think journalists would stoop so low as to learn something that the stupid babykilling grunts have to use?
View Replies To: rudabaga "what is wrong with everyone about this story?" Unfortunately, there are a few conspiracy loons even at this site. It's like the people at the DU who see Karl Rove's hand in everything that happens. While the DU is mostly filled with those types, we have a few here too. I say unless some real evidence emerges that this was a setup, there is no reason to attack someone who has obviously been through a lot already.
View Replies To: ricks_place Gee, give the poor girl a break! She repudiated her comments, and she's been through a trying time. OK, if later she says wierd things, then have at it, but for now, I wish these Freepers would put a lid on it and leave the girl alone.
View Replies To: ricks_place The full statement: I'm so happy to be free and am looking forward to spending a lot of time with my family. I want to express my deep appreciation to all the people who worked so long and hard for my release. I am humbled by the sympathy and support expressed by so many people during my kidnapping. In the past few days, the US military and officials have been extremely generous, and I am grateful for their help. Throughout this ordeal, many US agencies ...
