The ad begins by mentioning 9-11 in a blatant attempt to invoke fear and take the public's eye off the issues. The rest of the ad is nothing but the worst kind of anti-Democratic political spin with no real message behind it. It's a dirty PR campaign that we've become accustomed to seeing from the Republican leadership lately. Feingold is sitting in a position of authority on the subject and has helped put the Democrats on the offensive with his recent stances on protecting our civil liberties. The RNC can't stand it, but this move won't change anything. They are clearly on the defensive now, backpedaling, and right where we want them. This ad makes them look petty and out of touch with what our country is all about.
statement on wiretapping to date: "If you were on the phone with an al-Qaida person, I support your being wiretapped, all the time, for a long time," he told the audience. "We have laws already that allow the president to wiretap your line for 72 hours without a warrant. The whole thing they're saying about how Senator Feingold doesn't want us to be able to wiretap. I support wiretapping every single person who is working with a terrorist. I'm not sure which stations the ads will air on, but if you're in the area and happen to hear one, consider calling the radio station and letting them know what you think about the misleading ads. Feingold know that we won't back down on this issue: contact your senators, whether Democrat or Republican, and tell them to support the censure motion.
Straw Poll yesterday and Senator Feingold has pulled away with a huge lead. The latest numbers have Feingold with 48 % of the vote, Clark with 15% and Warner at 11%. These polls are important because they reflect the views on an informed segment of the Democratic base. The more people find out about the Senator the more they like him and his consistent leads at the DailyKos straw polls demonstrate that the support is legitimate and deep rather than being based on one or two issues. There are a lot of MeetUps and other gatherings happening in communities around the country to support Senator Feingold in 2008.
Minnesota for Feingold: Thursday, April 13th at 7:00 pm Also, the Progressive Patriots Fund is having it's second "Pick a Progressive Patriot" Competition to see which candidate for office will receive a $5000 contribution.
Feingold demonstrate that he is completely serious about helping the Democratic Party win in 2006 and not merely storing up campaign contributions for his own possible run in 08.
He touched on a number of topics including censure, Iraq, Iran, the Democratic Party, and a potential presidential run. Feingold wants to bring the wiretap issue to the forefront, to force his colleagues to finally face the fact that what the President has done is illegal. I came to the conclusion that I think just about anybody that's focused on the law in this area would come to, which is that he doesn't have a leg to stand on for this being legal. When you couple that with the fact that he had misled the American people on at least three occasions saying that he always got warrants. And then after the program was discovered the President got out and said basically, "tough luck, I'm going to do whatever I want to do whether it's within the law or not" - that, to me, demands a response. And I decided that we had to at least look at the possibility of letting the President know on the record that what he has done here is illegal or wrong.
Why wouldn't we assert our role, our constitutional role, which is that we make the laws? The President doesn't make the laws, he is supposed to enforce the laws, to execute the laws. And here he's basically saying he doesn't like a statute of congress -- FISA -- he'll just make up his own law based on some idea of inherent constitutional authority of the Commander-in-Chief and the Chief Executive. So Congress has a historical role and a sacred responsibility to uphold the checks and balances and to stand up for its own authority.
I think people may see this as I intended it, which is an opportunity, potentially on a bipartisan basis, for people to come together and say "look Mr President, you done wrong here, we want you to acknowledge that," and then we can get back to trying to figure out exactly what happened here and see if there's, by chance, any changes that need to be made in the future. He then went on to talk about the party's failure to get behind his motion.
Feingold Quotes "Of course, there is no doubt that if we lived in a police state, it would be easier to catch terrorists... And that would not be a country for which we could, in good conscience, ask our young people to fight and die.
