        \_ nobody cares
\_ I actually find that kind of creepy -- you could make a horror
movie with a couple of 'unexpected' twists with that. Just add
an extended torture sequence, and you've got a low budget hit....
\_ Mangrove ecology is rapidly rivaling deep sea vent ecology in the
News of the Weird section. Cool stuff, thanks for the link.

9/19 Real (i.e. inflation adjusted) per capita spending in the proposed
2010-11 General Fund budget is nearly the same as in the 1994-95
budget 16 years ago. Real per capita spending did increase during
the <DEAD>dot.com<DEAD> boom and again briefly after 2003 but current per capita
spending is below the recent long-term average.

"A recent report from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities
showed that nearly all states will spend less on vital services in
2012 than they did in 2008, after inflation, even though there
are more children in public schools and more poor people on the

\_ and the state is slowly turning conservative. Meg 2010!
\_ We will see. Seems unlikely.
\_ Yeah, because CA sure has a problem with not enough dems in power!
If only dems had been running the state for the last 40 years!

2/20 Ok serious question, NOT political. This is straight up procedural.
Has it been declared that we didn't find WMD in iraq? (think so).
So why did we go into iraq (what was the gain), and if nobody really
knows, why is nobody looking for the reason?
\_ Political stability, military strategy (Iran), and to prevent

8/12 Thanks for destroying the world's finest public University!
        http://tinyurl.com/kr92ob (The Economist)
\_ Why not raise tuition? At private universities, students generate
revenue. Students should not be seen as an expense. UC has

The team from Townsville's James Cook University is receiving international recognition for its discovery of polyrhachis sokolova. The ants nest in submerged mangroves and survive by hiding in air pockets and then swimming to the surface. Researcher Dr Simon Robson says he stumbled upon the ants while researching another project. "I was actually working with a film crew working on insects in the mangroves and they wanted to film one of these ants and I said, 'Well, lets put it on a rock in a puddle of water and that'll stop it going away and then you'll be able to film it,' and the ant promptly just leapt off the edge of the rock and swam across the water and disappeared. Dr Robson says it is amazing that the ants can survive in such a hostile environment. "We've been doing a lot of studies on their foraging behaviour and there's a lot of things that eat them, so when they're swimming, fish will sometimes eat them, mud skippers will eat them, crabs will attack them," he said. "It seems a very nasty place to live and we're still trying to work out how they manage to do so."
