I'm failing to see the possible practical applications for such a thing but hey that doesn't stop it from being very damn cool. If that were to get made into a toy, I bet it would not have all those wires sticking out, either.
As for no practicle applications you never know, a fell sized one of these truly would be an all terrain vehicle. Vielleicht kommt ja bald sowas tolles wie von einen Auto in ein Flugzeug, was zwar zu einen Chaos fhren wrde, aber lustig wre es trotzdem.
I would well buy two and make them wage war on each other and then get my mates round with theirs. Probably cost loads of money, but the entertainment value would cover that. For more examples, see any movie with Ray Harryhausen in the credits, or, see "The Wizard of Speed and Time." So get off your high horses and understand it's just research. You can have one that drives over long terrains, then transforms to climb a tree top to gather samples. You can have one enter a building in drive mode and then transform into droid mode to disable a bomb or by pass a thin walk way to a non-easily approahable on four wheels. The biggest benefit is that you don't have to a separate car, helicopter, arms just welded together to perform these tasks. They can reuse the the wheel rims as feet, and easily add step climbing features to the unit. I won't buy one, but maybe I'll try to join there future-research-ideas-direction team to make money in the military, local gov and business sectores. Three cheers to Optimus Prime, Bubble-bee, Megaron, Starscreem, and Rodimus.
Robotics are certainly getting more and more advanced every year... Next thing you know we'll have giant exo-skeletal transfoming mech suits working on all sorts of things... Though knowing humanity we'll end up just using that type of technology for stinky old warfare.
I can guarantee that all the people pretending to be too cool for this have absolutely no knowledge of electric, mechanical, or software engineering. Thirty years from now when there are machines that perform 95% of your routine household tasks then you will realize "what the point" of research projects like this was. Perhaps you should build something better if this fails to impress you.
A robot that transforms from a four wheeled vehicle to a bipedal robot and back! All it needs now is to be increased in size by several tons and make the classic Transformer noise!
php/tech-gadget/wr-07-a-real -transformer/trackback/ shows us a neat little toy from Japan. The humanoid robot is a deeply unlikely technology for the future: we are just not as efficient as quadrapeds, or better, wheeled creatures. I just want one that will be my pda/mobile phone and talk like Soundwave.
This is something I found over at Slashdot this morning. It was a video of a real tranformer changing from car to a walking robot then back again from a japanese tech convention.
That way, when it snows too much to drive around even in a 4 *4, I can just transform' it into the walking mode and walk over the hills to work, skipping the icy roads and traffic jams all together!
