2/1 Firefox 1.5.0.1 is out.
        In http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/releases/1.5.0.1.html it says
"International Domain Name support for Iceland (.is) is now enabled."
What's so special about the ".is" domain that it was disabled before?
\_ Iceland now follows Firefox's policy on identical-looking domain
names. This is all about names like http://m1cr0s0ft.com, which were a
minor annoyance in ASCII but have become a major annoyance in
Unicode. (For example, search google for "verisign IDN parody
example". That's not verisign.) People have proposed lots of
solutions, most of which require an impractical amount of work by
the user (e.g. hover over a domain name to see what character sets
it uses) or make non-English domain names look ugly (e.g. display
non-ASCII characters in a different color). The only decent
solution so far has been for registrars to do the work, and so
most registrars now have a policy to prevent two different people
from registering domain names that look the same. However, some
registrars (Verisign) don't do this, so Firefox doesn't display
Unicode domain names from them. Whenever a registrar adopts a
decent policy, they get added to the whitelist (csua.org/u/evq).
           --mconst
\_ It's probably not that the domain was disabled, it's that
Firefox will now understand Icelandic characters in domain names.
             -tom
\_ If you ask me they wanted to test the new update system, and what
better way than with a relatively innocuous update. For those
interested: According to the site there's also some stability,
memory leak, and security fixes too.

8/25 What's the best way to get a domain name that is about to expire?
\_ It's called backordering. It used to be fixed priced but now
they're trying to auction them. Still a good deal though.

7/9 is godaddy still the place for domain names? anything cheaper?
        \_ I use <DEAD>nearlyfreespeech.net<DEAD> since they're really awesome. It's worth
paying for a decent registrar. Also, I use Sitelutions for the DNS for
the domain, since it lets you have an enormous amount of control over
           your domain's DNS.

4/6 im considering making my Gmail account my default email for
all my online banking stuff and domain registration and bill pay.
Is there any anecdotal evidence of people getting their google
account hacked? After I do this change, Google will basically
        own me completely.

has more than one. How do I see them all? tnx MOTD!
\\_wow, I could not have picked a worse example.. "dig txt http://domain.com"
actually DOES show more than one. how come it doesn't work with
        mydomain.
\_ Show us your zone file. You probably did something wrong.

12/9 Does anyone know of a good blogging software that can
handle blogging entries as well as photo albums?
Wordpress and the WP Gallery plugin is too tricky to

via smbclient works just fine.

9/7 Dear Linux DNS experts, how do you find out if a domain has
published SPF records? Is there a magic command like hostname,
nslookup, etc that does this? I'm a UNIX noob. Thanks!

8/25 A guy wants to buy my domain name using http://escrow.com. Are they
shady or are they decent, compared to PayPal?
\_ http://escrow.com is legit. I would not use any other escrow site.
\_ I just used it, and it's REALLY FAST and simple to use

Drag the icon to your Dock if you want it to appear there. gz This will create a firefox subdirectory of that directory. Other Platforms Extract the compressed archive and run firefox. Uninstalling Firefox To uninstall Firefox, follow these instructions: Windows From the Start menu, choose Control Panel. When the Control Panel appears, double click Add/Remove Programs. These instructions leave your profile in place in case you install Firefox again in the future. If you wish to remove your profile folder, remove the location described below in the "Profile Folder" section. Note that by doing this you are destroying all of your Bookmarks, saved passwords, settings and other information and should you decide to use Firefox again you will be starting with a clean profile. mozilla/firefox Other Changes * On Linux, Firefox now follows GTK's setting for textbox keybindings, so pressing Ctrl+letters triggers application shortcuts instead of readline-like text-editing shortcuts. Extensions and Themes You may run into issues with our new Extension Compatibility and Update mechanism. There are simple workarounds for each of the three problems we're aware of. This is because Firefox changes from release to release and as such the ways in which some extensions integrate changes, meaning there can be problems when running an older extension with a newer version of Firefox. If you find that your favorite Extension or Theme has not been updated to be compatible with this release of Firefox, write the author and encourage them to update it. All Systems * Some firewall software may silently block Firefox from running. Most firewalls will ask you whether to allow a program to connect to the Internet. If you deny access, you must go into the firewall's configuration program and re-allow access. Windows * When installing as a restricted-access user on a shared machine into a location that you can write to, there may still be negative side effects (default browser/other keys not being set correctly). When installing as a restricted access user do not attempt to install over an installation in a restricted-access/shared location as this may destroy that installation. firefox -new-window /url/ will open the url in a new window; Web Page Rendering Troubleshooting * Poorly designed or incompatible Extensions can cause problems with your browser, including make it crash, slow down page display, etc. If you encounter strange problems relating to parts of the browser no longer working, the browser not starting, windows with strange or distorted appearance, degraded performance, etc, you may be suffering from Extension or Theme trouble. Disable the Extension or Theme that is causing trouble and then start normally. If you uninstall an extension that is installed with your user profile (ie you installed it from a web page) and then wish to install it for all user profiles using the -install-global-extension command line flag, you must restart the browser once to cleanse the profile extensions datasource of traces of that extension before installing with the switch. If you do not do this you may end up with a jammed entry in the Extensions list and will be unable to install the extension globally. If you encounter strange problems relating to bookmarks, downloads, window placement, toolbars, history, or other settings, use the Firefox Safe Mode to disable all extensions, themes, and optionally attempt to clean up any corrupted data. Make it your mission to convert as many of your friends, family members and coworkers as possible. If you're a student, get it distributed at your college.
