Times writer defends incendiary Iraq column LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A Los Angeles Times columnist who infuriated conservatives by writing that he does not support American troops fighting in Iraq -- and calling those who do "wusses" -- stood by the article on Tuesday. Joel Stein said he has been "bombarded" by hate mail over the incendiary article -- which was headlined "Warriors and Wusses" and held that US soldiers in Iraq were "ignoring their morality" -- but does not regret writing it and stands by the premise. "I don't support what they are doing, and I don't the see point of putting a big yellow magnet on your car if you don't," Stein told Reuters in an interview. But I don't agree with what they are doing so I don't see the logic of supporting it." The article, which ran on the Times opinion page on Tuesday, was quickly linked on conservative sites across the Internet, where readers poured scorn on Stein, on the newspaper and on liberals in general. com) Web site, one of nearly 500 people who had commented on the article by mid-afternoon. Conservative columnist Michelle Malkin quickly nominated Stein as "one of the most loathsome people in America." A Times spokesman said he could not immediately determine how many complaints the newspaper had received or if any readers had canceled subscriptions. Stein said that, despite the fact that his e-mail address was not made public by the paper, he had received some 100 "hate e-mails" by noon. "They're telling me to leave the country, which sounded good at first because I thought they meant a vacation. The columnist said he suspected the reaction was largely fueled by the Web sites, adding: "My guess is that it will die down pretty quickly." Stein said he had long considered the issue and that whenever a politician opposes the war but supports the troops "I just always think they are covering their ass." Asked if he had regrets, he said: "No, because I'm against the war.

This is a particularly difficult opinion to have, especially if you are the kind of person who likes to put bumper stickers on his car. Supporting the troops is a position that even Calvin is unwilling to urinate on. If you're wandering into a recruiter's office and signing up for eight years of unknown danger, I want to hang with you in Vegas. And I've got no problem with other people -- the ones who were for the Iraq war -- supporting the troops. If you think invading Iraq was a good idea, then by all means, support away. Load up on those patriotic magnets and bracelets and other trinkets the Chinese are making money off of. And being against the war and saying you support the troops is one of the wussiest positions the pacifists have ever taken -- and they're wussy by definition. It's as if the one lesson they took away from Vietnam wasn't to avoid foreign conflicts with no pressing national interest but to remember to throw a parade afterward. I do sympathize with people who joined up to protect our country, especially after 9/11, and were tricked into fighting in Iraq. I get mad when I'm tricked into clicking on a pop-up ad, so I can only imagine how they feel. I know this is all easy to say for a guy who grew up with money, did well in school and hasn't so much as served on jury duty for his country. But it's really not that easy to say because anyone remotely affiliated with the military could easily beat me up, and I'm listed in the phone book. I'm not advocating that we spit on returning veterans like they did after the Vietnam War, but we shouldn't be celebrating people for doing something we don't think was a good idea. All I'm asking is that we give our returning soldiers what they need: hospitals, pensions, mental health and a safe, immediate return. email this article 656 comments Comments are open and unmoderated, and do not necessarily reflect the views of Little Green Footballs. Targetpractice, Worst of Both Worlds 1/24/2006 09:38AM PST That's all we have ever asked of the Left: be honest with us and the American people. All this "we support the troops" horsesh*t is hard to swallow when you refuse to support the war they fight and demand they fight that same war with both arms tied behind their backs. Ayatollah Ghilmeini 1/24/2006 09:40AM PST Think of the article as a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the LA Times circulation that will ultimately put the author-moron to the curb. The backlash will have the LA Times on their knees in days if not hours. Timbre 1/24/2006 09:40AM PST He's just plain wrong and not a very good analyst of foreign affairs--like Charley Reese who said we had no business invading Afghanistan. These kind of people just need to be left alone and left behind to fend for themselves. Don't feed them, don't give them money, and don't give them airtime unless they pay extra for it. But its really not that easy to say because anyone remotely affiliated with the military could easily beat me up, and Im listed in the phone book." As if our military could be bothered worrying about an annoying gnat like you. Ed Mahmoud abu al Qahool Martyr Brigades 1/24/2006 09:44AM PST I question his patriotism. He fits the very definition of a limousine liberal, BTW I know this is all easy to say for a guy who grew up with money, did well in school and hasnt so much as served on jury duty for his country. So you're willingly signing up to be a fighting tool of American imperialism, for better or worse. Sometimes you get lucky and get to fight ethnic genocide in Kosovo, but other times it's Vietnam. And sometimes, for reasons I don't understand, you get to just hang out in Germany. But when you volunteer for the US military, you pretty much know you're not going to be fending off invasions from Mexico and Canada. So you're willingly signing up to be a fighting tool of American imperialism, for better or worse. Sometimes you get lucky and get to fight ethnic genocide in Kosovo, but other times it's Vietnam. In Kosovo it was to protect Muslims from genocide so that makes it alright or is it because his buddy Clinton sent us? I wish we could ship all the loonies who think the troops have nothing to do with the freedoms we have off to Saudi Arabia or Iran. Nothin' like taking our freedoms that were won with American blood for granted and living a pampered, petty life. They never want to be the ones getting their hands dirty and can see no reason to have a military. These are the pampered Princes and Princesses of privelege. Imagine if we did not have the Bill of Rights or perhaps lived under Sharia rule such as under the Taliban. This is the absolute same horseshit I heard back in 1970's. I mean, c'mon, the Left thinks George W Bush is guilty of war crimes for running an "illegal" war, yet supports the troops who not only didn't resist the "illegal" order to serve in that war but actually volunteered to serve? The work ahead is to use Stein's piece for something other than toilet paper -- to use it to force the "we support the troops" Lefties to admit that they are lying for PR effect. Exdamyankee 1/24/2006 09:47AM PST I think this is just great! The more that tools like this actually come out and say in public what they are thinking, the more they will drive the center of this country away from the left and away from the DemonRat party. They keep this up, they might as well not even field a candidate in '08. Curt 1/24/2006 09:47AM PST I get mad when Im tricked into clicking on a pop-up ad, so I can only imagine how they feel. This guy is messed up in his head if he's able to comment on a pop-up ad making him mad. Again ideals such as duty, honor, and country are completely foreign to liberals that they cannot conceive that others hold these values in such high regard they're willing to risk their lives for them. But it's really not that easy to say because anyone remotely affiliated with the military could easily beat me up, and I'm listed in the phone book. Wow - I wonder if he realizes how self-centered he sounds? I'm sure this article is a huge hit with the person he really cares about: himself. I wasn't exactly a major supporter of US intervention in Kosovo, but once it started I supported the troops by supporting their mission. Oh, and by the way, we're still there, despite what Clinton said. And being against the war and saying you support the troops is one of the wussiest positions the pacifists have ever taken and theyre wussy by definition. Its as if the one lesson they took away from Vietnam wasnt to avoid foreign conflicts with no pressing national interest but to remember to throw a parade afterward. He's basically calling out the Leftists who oppose the war for lying about their true nature when they say they 'support the troops,' all while opposing the mission. They want to win elections, so they lie about their morality, philosophical and practical positions on war, Iraq, freedom, democracy, and all the rest. So, they fig...

Chuck Pelto 1/24/2006 08:11PM PST PS What's his problem? He says they didn't give out his e-mail address, but in the article he says he's in the phone book, so anyone can come over and beat the living daylights out of him. Hence my advice to his editor that he was a paranoid masochist. Perhaps then, Joel could get an accurate reflection of what exactly the US Military does besides Iraq. Then again, I doubt Mr Stein wishes to share ALL his views on the world with us. But you don't care about the troops and don't support them. You're covering your ass by pretending to care about the troops when you just went on record saying you don't. Thank God these people are not in power and will not be any time soon. mama winger 1/24/2006 08:14PM PST Here's the blogger of the hour: Imamhunter 1/24/2006 09:36AM PST If I ever run into the a**hole, I'm going to knock his frickin' block off. ferris 1/24/2006 08:15PM PST A Los Angeles Times columnist who infuriated conservatives... Hey, if the left really supports the troops like they claim, wouldn't they be upset too? "" -- Joel Stein, in follow up article I wouldn't count on that Joel. Indeed, I suspect you'll probably need to change your name or disavow you even know yourself for quite some time. I swore an oath to defend the US Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic, when I enlisted in the US Army (regular), again three times in the US Army National Guard (reenlistments), and I will do so again in April for my next reenlistment. Do I have to capture this guy as an enemy combatant ("unlawful" according to the Geneva Conventions and the Rules of War, because he wears no uniform BTW), or as a traitor (eg Tokyo Rose, a SLAVE MOUTHPIECE for Tojo, who got convicted for treason and sentenced for --IIRC-- 10 years in prison)? Oh well, I gotta go to Fargo, ND and do science stuff for the next week. calcajun 1/24/2006 08:22PM PST Ah, to paraphrase the late Douglas Adams, "Mr Stein is a mindless jerk who will be first against the wall when the revolution comes." Mexican Army troops had several mounted machine guns on the ground more than 200 yards inside the US border -- near Neely's Crossing, about 50 miles east of El Paso -- when Border Patrol agents called for backup. Hudspeth County deputies and Texas Highway patrol officers arrived shortly afterward, Doyal said. "It's been so bred into everyone not to start an international incident with Mexico that it's been going on for years," Doyal said. "When you're up against mounted machine guns, what can you do? An FBI spokeswoman confirmed the incident happened at 2:15 pm Pacific Time. "Bad guys in three vehicles ended up on the border," said Andrea Simmons, a spokeswoman with the FBI's El Paso office. "People with Humvees, who appeared to be with the Mexican Army, were involved with the three vehicles in getting them back across." Simmons said the FBI was not involved and referred inquiries to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Doyal said deputies captured one vehicle in the incident, a Cadillac Escalade reportedly stolen from El Paso, and found 1,477 pounds of marijuana inside. The Mexican soldiers set fire to one of the Humvees stuck in the river, he said. The men -- who were carrying machine guns and driving military vehicles -- were trying to bring more than three tons of marijuana across the Rio Grande, Doyal said. Doyal said such incidents are common at Neely's Crossing, which is near Fort Hancock, Texas, and across from the Mexican state of Chihuahua. Deputies and border patrol agents are not equipped for combat, he added. "It's not the immigrants coming over for jobs we're worried about. It's the smugglers, Mexican military and the national threat to our borders that we're worried about." David Dreier, R-Glendora, and Duncan Hunter, R-San Diego, last week asked the House Judiciary Committee, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, the House Homeland Security Committee and the House International Relations Committee to investigate the incursions. The story focused on a Department of Homeland Security document reporting 216 incursions by Mexican soldiers during the past 10 years and a map with the seal of the president's Office of National Drug Control Policy, both of which were given to the newspaper. com (a popular warblog) tended to be indistinguishable in tone and content from the writings of Adolf Hitler, Heinrich Himmler, and the other architects of the "final solution." Well, maybe not - but close enough and often enough to be pretty disturbing. Yes, the quotes I've used here are all "cherry-picked" - from LGF and the Nazis both - but since the webmaster patrols LGF pretty thoroughly it's fair to say that his site is as defined by what he allows (eg, calls to "sterilize" the "subhuman" Palestinians) as it is by what he doesn't (eg, criticisms of Israel or George W). quiz that floated around the WWW a couple of years back. Interesting questions present themselves: Are genocide (and the language of genocide) always wrong because of *what* they represent? Or are genocide (and the language of genocide) sometimes wrong and sometimes right, depending on *who* they are deployed against? Is it really necessary to dehumanize "the enemy" in order to win a war? If we recycle the persuasive strategies and rhetorical tropes of the Third Reich in our battle against "global Islamofascism," then how does that change the way we think about other (formerly unthinkable) tactics of total war? NEW YORK - The American Civil Liberties Union sued the US government Wednesday for preventing a Muslim scholar from entering the country, arguing that the government was using anti-terrorism laws as "instruments of censorship." The lawsuit asks the court to find a provision of the Patriot Act unconstitutional and seeks clearance for Tariq Ramadan, a Swiss intellectual and Muslim scholar, to accept invitations to speak in the United States. Ramadan was blocked from accepting a tenured teaching position at the University of Notre Dame when his visa was revoked in August 2004 because of a provision of the Patriot Act, said Jameel Jaffer, an ACLU staff attorney. Jaffer said it was part of an effort by the federal government to bar foreign scholars whose political views might be contrary to those of the US government. The provision blocks entry to the country for prominent aliens who used their status to endorse or espouse terrorism or to persuade others to terrorist activity, he said. "We don't think there's any evidence at all that he has endorsed terrorism," Jaffer said. "In fact, there is overwhelming evidence that he has condemned terrorism." Some background on Tariq Ramadan: * He has praised the brutal Islamist policies of the Sudanese politician Hassan Al-Turabi. Mr Turabi in turn called Mr Ramadan the "future of Islam." Europe's biggest exhibition of modern-day Islam will take place in London a year after the 7 July bombings in an effort to depict the religion in a positive light. The Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, is set to launch the event which hopes to "combat the myths, misconceptions and misunderstandings of Islam". IslamExpo will consist of a series of exhibitions on Islam's cultural heritage, lectures, debates, films, stand-up comedy and workshops at Alexandra Palace. Organisers plan to invite survivors of the Tube attacks to attend with a special commemoration on the day. It is hoped that the event will help to improve relations between Britain's 18 million Muslims and the wider community. The exhibitions will be divided into three zones: "Discover Islam", which will feature famous mosques and a demonstration on a prayer platform; and "Muslim World", which covers Palestinian history, religious chants and a gallery of famous converts. Seminars ranging from democracy and jihad to Muslim gardening and agriculture will also take place. The booklet, titled "Global Agenda," bears the logo of the World Economic Forum and includes an introduction written by the conference organizers. It appears to be an official publication of the World Economic Forum and is included in every file handed out to conference participants. It is also distributed at the Zurich Airport and at Swiss hotels. The booklet includes an unusually harsh article written by Mazin Qumsiyeh, a lecturer at a number of American universities, titled "Boycott Israel." The article includes an unequivocal call to establish a global movement against Zionism and a global movement against the "Israeli apartheid", as well as anti-Israeli, anti-Zionist and anti-Semitic remarks and threats, the likes of which are usually published in marginal magazines in the West or by radical Islamists. The writer claims that Zionism's goal is to wipe out the Palestinian people, that it is one of the worst colonialist and racist movements ever, and that the Zionists of today are pulling the strings and setting the policy of the US government. The same booklet contains dozens of articles by state leaders, economists, philosophers and CEO's with an international reputation, including articles by Russia's president, Pakistan's president and dozens of Jewish public figures, who were apparently unaware of the fact that they appear on Qumsiyeh's list. MANAMA, Bahrain - Michael Jackson visited a mall in Bahrain's capital Wednesday, covering himself in a black abaya robe traditionally worn by conservative Bahraini women and a veil hiding his face. The 47-year-old pop star was accompanied by three children, apparently his, whose faces were covered with dark scarves. They wore yellow shirts and sweat pants or khakis, without robes. Jackson, who seems to be settling in the Persian Gulf, was seen leaving Marina Mall holding a young child by the hand. On the way out through a back door, he shook hands with security guards. has agreed to censor its results in China, adhering to the country's free-speech restrictions in return for better access in the Internet's fastest growing market. A Chinese-language version of Google's search engine has previously been available through the company's dot-com address in the United States. To obtain the Chinese license, Google agreed to omit Web content that the country's government finds objectionable. Google will base its censorship decisons on guidance provided by Chinese government officials. Although China has loosened some of its controls in recent years, some topics, such as Taiwan's independence and 1989's Tiananmen Square massacre, remain forbidden subjects. Google officials characterized the censorship concessions in China as an excruciating decision for a company that adopted "don't be evil" as a motto. "We firmly believe, with our culture of innovation, Google can make meaningful and positive contributions to the already impressive pace of development in China," said Andrew McLaughlin, Google's senior policy counsel. GAZA CITY (AFP) - Hamas, the radical Islamist faction behind a majority of attacks on Israel, vowed not to disarm or negotiate with the Jewish state if it enters the Palestinian parliament after the election. Unbowed by international pressure to lay down arms if his party achieves the electoral success many predict, chief candidate Ismail Haniya said there was no contradiction between guns and democracy as he voted in a Gaza refugee camp. "The Americans and the Europeans say to Hamas: either you have weapons or you enter the legislative council. We say (we will have) weapons and the legislative council, there is no contradiction between the two," he said Wednesday. LOS ANGELES, Jan 24 (Reuters) - A Los Angeles Times columnist who infuriated conservatives by writing that he does not support American troops fighting in Iraq -- and calling those who do "wusses" -- stood by the article on Tuesday. But I don't agree with what they are doing so I don't see the logic of supporting it."
