12/15 For Star Trek movie guy: Shatner, Stewart, and Bakula to team up in ultimate unholy movie of horribleness: http://www.hollywood.com/news/detail/id/3472202 \_ Why do star trek writers love time travel so much? Do they all have the fantasy of going back in time and sleeping with their mom? \_ Because it allows unlimited cross over episodes between the 3 time periods they wrote material. \_ They have the fantasy of going back in time and child-molest their own selves. their own selves. Screwing a young virgin asshole with your big fat dick while having your young virgin asshole screwed by a big fat dick ...... oh it's so HOT! \_ Time travel is a crutch that lets writers to indulge in their favorite setting. Instead of creating new scenarios and implications, they go to the past and play "alternate history," but somehow they end up back in the same exact world they left from because the "true" outcome is pretty much the "best" one. No one kills Hitler, stops WWI, or saves Kennedy. Only small personal victories are allowed. Sigh. Thinking is hard. \_ When I was in middle school, my friend and I who were obscessed with time travel swore that if we ever got our time machine to work, the first thing we would do was go back and tell our middle school selves about it. By the end of 8th grade we pretty much concluded that neither of us would ever invent a time machine. The difference between us and those wankers at MIT was that we had the excuse of being 12. \_ What was so great about Kennedy? Bay of Pigs? Nuclear war? \_ More interesting is the time, not the man. Vietnam, civil rights, and the cold war. \_ The original plot line for ST2 had Kirk et. al. traveling back in time to assassinate Kennedy in order to restore their timeline. \_ If they're doing this Mirror, Mirror bs, they sure as hell better bring Avery Brooks back into the project. \_ Damn straight. They won't, though. He was the most interesting captain by far, but the ST fan base never took to him. \_ Pre Shaved Head Sisko was a loser, Shaved Head Goatee Sisko rocked. He was my 2d best captain in the ST universe (Kirk being the best; although Spock technically was a Captain by rank, he doesn't count b/c he never had an independent cmd). I'd love to see a movie w/ Sisko. -stmg \_ IMHO, DS9 >> ST:[TNG,TOS,E,V]. I love TOS, but sometimes you have to get over the first love and move on. \_ As much as I like DS9 (enough to play both Harbinger and The Fallen), I still think that TOS is better b/c of the cast. DS9 had too many losers (Jake, Dr. Bashir, Rom, Nog, &c.) and they managed to mess up stuff like the really cool Section 31 plot line. -stmg \_ It was a better show with losers. Everyone in the other ST shows were idealized paragons. Blah. \_ I can agree that in TOS the characters were nearly perfect, but not in the other shows. The only near perfect characters in TNG were Data and Lore. There were no perfect characters in Voyager. Seven of Nine was not bad, but you can only watch so many episodes where she walks around in a one piece with a concussion phaser rifle :-). -stmg \_ That's because it's B5 with the serial numbers filed off. And of course B5 is LotR with the serial numbers filed off. \_ B5 was ass. About the only good things on B5 were Kosh (good and bad), Chekov and Marcus and JMS killed off Good Kosh and Marcus. Pox on JMS. LotR is even worse than B5. About the only thing worse than LotR I've ever seen was Attack of the Clowns (Yes, even Final Frontier was better). -stmg \_ Lord of the Rings is worse? \_ If B5 was ass, it was supermodel ass. Don't let your love of the One True Space Opera cloud your ability to appreciate other well-done series. \_ You mean Dune? Cause that's what Lucas copied \_ The only good thing about Dune was that Picard was in it. -stmg \_ You suck. \_ I like SG-1. I've watched ever eps. of B5 and I still think it is ass. My opinion might have been different if (1) JMS didn't might have been different if JMS didn't (1) make Evil Kosh act like a sniveling child in front of the first one and (2) JMS didn't kill off Marcus. -stmg in front of the first one and (2) kill off Marcus. -stmg \_ Huh, I don't really see how B5 is LotR. Please elaborate. \_ There were some obvious nods. The First One named Lorien. Sheridan's leap into Z'ha'dum to come back later (compare to Gandalf's plunge into Khazad dum). The Elder races going away to leave man (the Third Age of Man). Etc. \_ As you say, those are nods. "B5 is LotR with the serial numbers filed off," suggests wholesale lifting of the plot. / http://www.bbspot.com/News/2003/07/babylon_5.html \_ If you go to Khazad-dum, you will die. -geordan \_ I thought DS9 would be B5 with SNs filed off at first, too, but subsequent viewing proved me completely wrong. It was its own original thing. \_ DS9 has actual plot arcs and something unique to offer ST viewers, conflict. \_ Except their entire war thing was stolen from B5. The thing with the gods dragged on way too long too. At least it wasn't like ST:TNG, "Sir! We're under attack!" "Raise shields, conference!" \_ No, I'm pretty sure war existed before B5. What you did have was shifting alliances and actual reasons for war. And DS9 touched on religion as an actual subject matter in character lives instead of a plugin addon. \_ Even better, TAS might be coming to dvd next year: http://www.thedigitalbits.com/rumormill.html#1215 -stmg -stm |

www.bbspot.com/News/2003/07/babylon_5.html Thursday, July 17 12:01 AM EDT Did Lord of the Rings Rip Off Babylon 5? By Alan DeHaan Wellington, New Zealand - Babylon 5 fans have long felt they've been negl ected and sometimes even persecuted. As a group they have a history of b eing very vocal whenever they think something is ripping off their belov ed television show. From almost the second it premiered there was an ongoing flame war between Babylon 5 fans and Deep Space 9 fans as to which show ripped off which. Since Babylon 5 has been off the air, and it's spinoff canceled, the rancor of the fans has died down. "This is a complete and total rip off," screams out Babylon 5 fan James Gretous. " It's been half a year since the Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers was rel eased, but now the complaints are beginning to reach a crescendo pitch. They believe that Lord of the Rings has ripped off Babylon 5 in several instances. The one that is repeated on various message boards and chat s essions constantly is how Gandalf fell, died and came back at Khazad-dm . "That's when I first noticed how much these movies are ripping off Babylo n 5," says Richard Thompson. "Back at the end of Season 3, Sheridan fell and died at Z'ha'dum. They even have Arwen choosing to go mortal, as Del enn used the chrysalis to become part human. Gandalf is reve aled to be the great Elvish philosopher-warrior Velan from a thousand ye ars back?" Several message boards about Babylon 5 have been in an uproar over this. According to one moderator that wishes to be nameless there has been a h uge boost in posts since Fellowship of the Ring came out. He also claims he has led several flame attacks on various Lord of the Rings message b oards and chat rooms. The flame attacks consisted of multiple topics tha t viciously attack Jackson over the alleged plagiarism. Uruk-hai Unhappy with Portrayal in Films Babylon 5's usually outspoken creator, Joe Michael Straczynski, has remai ned oddly silent on this issue. Fans have clogged the Babylon 5 usenet f orum, where Mr Straczynski resides, with questions about this issue. Th e questions have recently turned into demands for a statement, but all M r Straczynski answered the demands with was this comment: "I personally have not seen the movies and cannot comment on if they plagiarized my w ork." www.thedigitalbits.com/rumormill.html#1215 we've confirmed with multiple sources now, each in places to know , that work is definitely underway at Paramount for a 2006 DVD release o f Star Trek: The Complete Animated Series. And we have a little bit of a dditional information today as well. In our last post, we'd said to expe ct the title early in 2006. We're now hearing that mid-to-late 2006 is t he more likely timeframe. One source told us not to expect the title on the studio's release schedule before June, and a couple of others have l et us know that September or October is tentatively planned. It was back on September 8th of 1966 that the original Star Trek series first debuted on NBC TV here in the States. That would make September 2006 the franchise's official 4 0th Anniversary. Paramount's gotta do SOMETHING for the 40th Anniversary, rig ht? Editor's Note: Several readers have e-mailed to remind us that The Anima ted Series also made its TV debut on September 8th, back in 1973. Keep those hailing frequencies open, 'cause you know we'll keep you up to date on this in the weeks and months ahead... It seems like we report on this title about every six months, only to see its release delayed again. But sources are telling us that work is indee d underway on a long-awaited DVD release of Star Trek: The Complete Anim ated Series. If all goes well, look for Paramount to release the title e arly in 2006. Speaking of Paramount, we're being told that the studio is also soon to a nnounce full-season DVD releases of JAG, Navy NCIS, Numb3rs, Medium, Win gs, the classic Mission: Impossible, Perry Mason, The Beverly Hillbillie s, The Phil Silvers Show, The Sentinel and The Wild Wild West. Now if we could just get 1492: The Conquest of Paradise and Robinson Crus oe on Mars outta Paramount, we'd REALLY be happy... Sources are telling us to expect Touchstone's Flightplan to land in store s on 2/7. And 20th C entury Fox is expected to release Separate Lies on 2/21. They include Island in t he Sun (with audio commentary by John Stanley and the Dorothy Dandridge: Little Girl Lost documentary), Stormy Weather (with audio commentary by Dr. Todd Boyd and the Bill Robinson: Mr Bojangles documentary) and Pin ky (with audio commentary by Kenneth Geist). Look for the following titles to be announced soon for the dates listed : Universal - Broken Flowers (1/3), The Constant Gardener (1/10), Two for t he Money (1/17) Lions Gate - Lord of War (1/17) Buena Vista - Underclassman (Miramax - 1/17), Flightplan (Touchstone - 1/ 24) First Look - Half Light (1/17) Stay tuned... Word is, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainmen t is currently working on a DVD release of the show's complete first sea son. Look for it to hit store shelves in early Spring (possibly as early as March). when I origin ally reviewed the film back in May, I said that a LOT of footage had bee n cut for the theatrical release - entire subplots were trimmed for time . Expect this director's cut to be released as a multi-disc set in 2006. The film will be some 45 minutes longer (and we hear MUCH better). Watch for our review of the ne w theatrical edition DVD very soon. Early wo rd indicates that the disc may include Whedon audio commentary, along wi th at least 4 behind-the-scenes featurettes (Future History, We'll Have a Fruity Oaty Good Time, Re-Lighting the Firefly and What's in a Firefly ), a video introduction to the film by Whedon and 6 minutes worth of out takes. com have let us know that the latest scuttlebutt has HBO releasing the classic Get Smart TV series on DVD in 2006. HBO apparently owns the rights to the property, as they produced the short-lived 1995 remake series. and producer Ilya Sa lkind have finally negotiated a deal for the release of director Richard Donner's original unused footage from Superman II. This would allow for the creation of a long-awaited Superman II: Director's Cut that would b e closer to the film Donner was crafting before the film was taken away from him by the studio back in 1979 and given to replacement director Ri chard Lester. Donner, as many of you know, also directed the original Su perman: The Movie (the two films were shot, for the most part, simultane ously). The idea behind all of this, of course, is that Warner wants to release new DVD special editions of Superman II, Superman III and Superm an IV: The Quest for Peace in conjunction with the theatrical or DVD deb ut of Bryan Singer's currently in production Superman Returns. We've got our sources checking on both of these stories, and we'll let yo u know when we're able to confirm them. Our latest information indicates that Warner 's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory will arrive on DVD on 11/8. Also, D reamWorks is now expected to release Steven Spielberg's War of the World s on 11/22. Look for Sony 's Christmas with the Kranks and Lions Gate's The Devil's Rejects on 11/ 8 Universal's Skeleton Key, Dreamworks' War of the Worlds (2005 - the S pielberg version) and Lions Gate's Happy Endings follow on 11/15. Finall y, Warner rounds out the month of November with March of the Penguins on 11/22. Look for it to hit stores on 12/ 6 Just in case you were wondering. We've gotten word from sources on the contents o f the 2-disc DVD set (tentative street date 10/18), which we now expect to include anamorphic widescreen video, Dolby Digital 51 audio, audio c ommentary with director Christopher Nolan and co-writer David Goyer, 10 behind-the-scenes featurettes (including The Journey Begins, Genesis of the Bat, Path to Discovery, Shaping Mind and Body, Gotham City Rises, Ca pe and Cowl, The Tumbler, Saving Gotham City, Reflections on Writing and Digital Batman), the film's teaser and theatrical trailers and at least a few Easter eggs. a quick search of the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) we bsite. The BBFC reviews film and DVD content in advance of release and i ssues ratings (much like the MPAA does in the US for theatrical films) . This seems to include delete d scenes and behind-the-scenes/production video, which will all be viewa ble in context while you're watching the film via a non-seamless branchi ng option (on Discs One and Two of the three disc set). Once again, let me remind you that this is all unofficial until the studi os make their appropriate announcements. We've confirmed wit h sources in the know that the new 2-disc Batman Forever DVD will NOT in clude a new director's cut as previously rumored. It was apparently some thing that was considered, but we're told it ultimately didn't happen. We've also been told by our sources that Warner's The Dukes of Hazzard re make will likely street before the end of 2005, in two versions - the PG -13 theatrical cut and a racier R-rated edition. Also, we're hearing that the DVD release of New Line's Wedding Crashers i s likely going to get pushed into the first quarter of 2006. Ultimate Disney is reporting that a promotional booklet insi de Disney's new The Muppets' Wizard of Oz DVD indicates that the studio will re-issue four of the Muppet feature films (remastered) on DVD in No vember, including the original Muppet Movie. our own sources indicate the r ecent Batman Begins will be released (and our sources have confirmed the 10/18 date for the other Batman films as well). All four titles will re portedly also be available on that day in a box set called Batman: The M otion Picture Anthology 1989-1997. Each 2-disc set will feature a new an amorphic widescreen transfer of the film, along with new director commen taries by Joel Schumacher and Tim Burton, cast and crew interviews, seve ral new documentaries and behind-the-scenes featurettes, music videos fr om Prince, Seal and the Smashing Pumpkins, trailers, TV spots, vintage f ootage, etc. There's also word that Schumacher has created a new, 150-mi nute director's cut of Batman Forever, and that both the original cut an d the new cut will be included on the DVD via seamless branching. Also, Bits reader Andrew X sent in this report via e-mail: My wife was asked to take a survey today from a marketing company. The qu estions were VERY Charlie and the Chocolate Factory oriented. Here's the one that got my attention: "In addition to the regula... |
