10/24 I find this amusing. Apparently "Intelligent Design" folks are
saying that "March of the Penguins" supports ID. When I watched it I
was thinking how natural selection is at every step of the way. -emarkp

\_ They are capitalizing on the movie's hype and betting on people
being too busy to watch the actual film to verify their claims. In
other words, what a smart deceptive move.
\_ Even worse, Intelligent Design has nothing to with behavior.
It seeks to explain the workings of life on a molecular level.
It's akin to saying Democracy was caused by evolution.

March of the Penguins," a documentary about the mati ng ritual of Arctic birds is lashing out against Christians and others w ho suggest the film helps prove "intelligent design" rather than the the ory of evolution. "It does annoy me to a certain degree," Luc Jacquet told the Sunday Times of London. The intelligent design theory is a step back to the thinking of 300 yea rs ago. Some scie ntists I know find the film interesting because it can be a good argumen t against intelligent design. Some Christian-oriented commentators in the US have said the penguins a re symbols for everything from monogamy to the right to life. Radio host and film critic Michael Medved, noted the story of the emperor penguins ' journey "most passionately affirms traditional norms like monogamy, sa crifice and child rearing." "If you want an example of monogamy, penguins are not a good choice," Jac quet told The Times. "The divorce rate in emperor penguins is 80 to 90 p er cent each year. Writing in the Christian publication World magazine Andrew Coffin, wrote the complexity of the penguins' lives was clear evidence of intelligent design, demonstrating it could not have come about through random select ion. "It's sad that acknowledgment of a Creator is absent in the examination o f such strange and wonderful animals," he wrote. "But it is a gap easily filled by family discussion after the film."
