The system use s a combination of headlight-mounted IR emitters and an IR camera behind the radiator, linked to a small heads-up display that shows a composite image. Siemens second innovation is a system that uses pattern recogni tion to pick out pedestrians as they lunge at you from the sidelines. An yone who has driven in crowded urban areas and has had to hit the brakes to avoid someone who never bothered memorizing cross at the green, not in-between could use one of these; unfortunately, its still just a pr ototype, so youll have to keep your foot on the brake a little longer.
amnesia you should note that Volvo was the first to actually put this concept to the test 2 Posted Sep 19, 2005, 10:03 PM ET by Sammy What's that at the center of the gauge cluster?
Geoffrey Aladro Yeah, I really like the idea of having the navigation screen in front of the driver rather than off to the side. Because they use Infrared lights to actively illuminate the scene to make up for the poor quality of the infrared detectors used. This is fi ne if you only sell a few hundred units, and there's no chance that you' ll ever meet a fellow IR system user coming the other way. But if these systems ever get popular, the active IR illumination will be like headlights that you can never dip, dazzling the IR systems of cars coming in the opposite direction, effectively blinding these over-price d toys. The solution - passive IR detection systems using higher-priced higher-qu ality IR detectors and no IR illumination other than the IR given out by people, cars and other objects - are currently available, but much more expensive. Still, they'll be what auto makers use when these night visi on systems go into mainstream use in a few years... by which time these active systems will hopefully have broken down. If not, we'll all be bli nded by the old fool driving that beaten up old vintage Hummer! I'd guess a large ammount and this system doesn't do an ything to resolve that.
G Hi there, the system is already integrated in the new Mercedes S-Class.
