        \_ haha. what losers.
\_ So some people who have trapped in Gaza are leaving and the
rest are arming themselves. How does that make them losers?
\_ As if that was the least of it. Looters are destroying
           everything, including the greenhouses: http://csua.org/u/de0
\_ lol, what a bunch of dumasses.
\_ And desecrating synagogues. Way to go, religion of peace!
\_ Red Herring. The PA asked the Isreali govt to remove
them, they agreed then at the last minute refused.
The Palestinians need the land for other uses, so they
                 have to tear them down.
\_ I doubt religion has much to do with it ... They've been
                 occupied for decades.
occupied for decades. I'd be burning down the buildings
of the occupiers too, especially the ones that are useless.

com Headlines RSS The Jerusalem Post Internet Edition Egypt struggles with Gaza infiltrators Khaled Abu Toameh, THE JERUSALEM POST Sep. The agreement was reached during a tense meeting between Egyptian and PA security officials after thousands of Palestinians infiltrated the borde r over the past 48 hours. "As of Wednesday, the border with Egypt will be sealed off," a top PA sec urity official told The Jerusalem Post. "We will deploy hundreds of poli cemen on the Palestinian side to stop people from crossing into Egypt." The official revealed that the Egyptians were "extremely unhappy" with th e way the PA was handling the matter. "They told us that they don't want to see the anarchy continue on our side," he said. "They also warned th at Egypt would not tolerate any attempt to smuggle weapons or goods into the Gaza Strip." PA National Security Adviser Jibril Rajoub, who participated in the talks with the Egyptians, blamed Israel for the ongoing anarchy. "Israel is r esponsible for the chaos at the border crossing because it withdrew in a disorganized manner and in a way that did not allow us to take control, " he said. Rajoub said the two sides agreed to close the Rafah border crossing start ing from 6 am Wednesday and to deploy more troops along the borders to stop people from crossing freely in both directions. In a bid to ease mounting tensions with the PA, the Egyptian authorities announced that Palestinian infiltrators would be allowed to stay for onl y 96 hours. Despite months of training and coordination with the PA security forces, Egyptian border policemen deployed along the Philadelphi corridor failed to stop Palestinians from crossing. Many Palestinians tore down a wall and security fence over the past 48 ho urs, entering Egypt to buy cheap cigarettes, medication, food and electr ic appliances. Others said they crossed to see relatives living in the Egyptian part of Rafah. On Monday, Egyptian border policemen shot and killed a Palestinian as he tried to infiltrate into Egypt. Three others Palestinians were wounded i n the incident. In more scenes of chaos in the Gaza Strip in the aftermath of the disenga gement, the PA has urged Palestinians to stop the looting of greenhouses in the former settlements, saying it was determined to end growing anar chy and lawlessness. Thousands of PA policemen deployed in the former settlements were unable to stop Palestinians from storming the greenhouses on Tuesday and steali ng water pipes and other equipment. Some 3,000-4,000 greenhouses were recently purchased by a private foundat ion that raised $14 million. Most of the money was raised by Quartet spe cial envoy James Wolfensohn, a former World Bank president, who also con tributed $500,000 of his money with the hope that the greenhouses would provide jobs and income for Gaza's shattered economy. In an attempt to halt the looting, PA policemen sealed off the former set tlements and declared them closed military zones. Club-wielding policeme n intercepted some of the looters, confiscating water pipes, roof tiles and window frames. One man who refused to hand over stolen items was sev erely beaten. The policemen also banned cars from entering Neveh Dekalim . During a tour of Neveh Dekalim, Prime Minister Ahmed Qurei called upon Pa lestinians to leave the greenhouses intact. He also urged them to stop l ooting and start rebuilding in the abandoned settlements. "The nightmare is over, the occupation has gone and Gaza is now without s ettlers. Addressing the looters, Qurei added: "You won't profit from a pillar, pla stic tubing or pieces of wood that you are taking. We don 't want anyone to touch or harm anything that can be useful for our peop le." But even as he spoke, hundreds of Palestinians raided the former settleme nt of Gadid to sift through debris. "This is a big disgrace," said polic eman Raed Hijazi as he watched the looters. This they are stealing the property of the Palestinian people." PA Interior Ministry spokesman Tawfik Abu Khoussa condemned the looting a nd complained that the PA did not have enough forces to impose law and o rder. However, he claimed that the looting did not cause structural dama ge to the greenhouses. PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas said on Tuesday that the Israeli withdrawal was not an end to occupation and that Israel must also withdraw from the We st Bank and Jerusalem. "The withdrawal of the occupation army and the settlers from the Gaza Str ip doesn't mean in any way that occupation has come to an end," he said in the speech broadcast on PA-controlled radio and television. Speaking to reporters after chairing a cabinet meeting in Gaza City, Qure i said the PA security forces would now focus on three areas: the indust rial zone at Erez, the greenhouses and the Rafah border crossing. Qurei also said disengagement does not mean the end of Israeli occupation . Qurei added that unless the Rafah border crossing was handed over to the Palestinians, the Gaza Strip would be turned into a "big prison." He sai d the Israeli pullout was the first step toward liberating the rest of P alestinian lands. Qurei said that as far as the PA was concerned, the occupation hasn't end ed because Israel continues to control the border crossings and the airs pace, as well as water resources. "There are many issues that haven't been resolved yet," he said. "The bor der, water and airspace should be under our control. The only borders we 're are prepared to accept are the 1967 borders." Qurei hailed Hamas and Islamic Jihad for their role in driving Israel out of the Gaza Strip. "The Israeli withdrawal and the dismantlement of the settlements is the r esult of our people's sacrifices and heroic resistance," he said.

AP Gunrunners Smuggle Weapons Into Gaza By LARA SUKHTIAN, Associated Press Writer Wed Sep 14, 5:05 PM ET RAFAH, Gaza Strip - Palestinian gunrunners smuggled hundreds of assault r ifles and pistols across the Egyptian frontier into Gaza, dealers and bo rder officials told The Associated Press on Wednesday. The influx confir med Israeli fears about giving up border control and could further desta bilize Gaza. Click Here Black market prices for weapons dropped sharply, with AK-47 assault rifle s nearly cut in half to $1,300 and even steeper reductions for handguns. News of the smuggling came as Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas tried to i mpose order following the Israeli troop withdrawal from Gaza this week. Israel voiced concern about chaos along the Egypt-Gaza border in the three days since its pullout, sending messages to the United States, Egypt and the Palestinians. "We will not put up with this," Defense Minister Shaul Mof az said. Egypt had assured Israel it would prevent weapons smuggling once its troo ps take over from Israel along the Gaza frontier, and Cairo and the Pale stinian Authority pledged to seal the once-heavily defended border by We dnesday evening. Around 8 pm Wednesday, about two hours after the deadline for closing t he border, an Egyptian officer bellowed into a bullhorn for Palestinians to stop entering Egypt and prepare to return to Gaza. The frontier was still porous later, however, with Egyptian police pushin g back Palestinians scaling the concrete wall on the Gaza side and tryin g to sneak through the barbed-wire fence on the Egyptian side. Up to 750 Egyptian border guards were expected Thursday morning, Egyptian police said. Palestinian security forces in Gaza apparently were doing little to stop infiltrators. At midday, Hamas militants blew a hole in the Gaza wall, m aking it even easier for people to enter the 18-foot-wide buffer zone le ading to Egypt's fence. Palestinian Interior Ministry spokesman Tawfiq Abu Khoussa told the AP th e border was officially closed as of 6 pm but that Palestinians and Eg yptians caught on the wrong side were being allowed to cross. He said th ere had been a small amount of arms smuggling. Earlier Wednesday, Egypt confiscated 38 firearms and three rocket-propell ed grenades in a tunnel under the border, an Egyptian official said. On the Palestinian side, guards said they seized nearly 600 pounds of marij uana. Three arms dealers told the AP their "mules' bought large quantities of a ssault rifles, pistols and bullets in Egypt, mainly from Bedouin tribesm en, in the three days since Israel's withdrawal. Prices in Egypt are far lower than in Gaza, where during Israeli rule smugglers tunneled under the border to bring in weapons. Since Monday, black-market weapons prices have plunged in Gaza, the deale rs said. An AK-47 assault rifle fell from $2,000 to $1,300, while bullet s cost as little $1 compared to four times that. Egyptian-made pistols that sold for $1,400 are now as little as $180; an Italian pistol costs $400, down from $3,500, said an arms dealer who ide ntified himself only as Khader, for fear of arrest. Another dealer, interviewed in a car outside the Rafah cemetery, said hun dreds of AK-47s had been smuggled from Egypt since Monday. He said he ha s sold his loot to militants but declined to say how many pieces his run ners brought back. The dealer, a balding man with a two-day stubble, said he went to Egypt t o meet business partners with whom he had dealt by phone during nearly f ive years of Israeli-Palestinian fighting. Khader, interviewed by phone, said his runners came back mainly with pist ols and bullets, rather than assault rifles and rocket-propelled grenade launchers. "My people brought me lots of things, including pistols and gold," he said. A third dealer, who gave his name as Hafez, said competitors reported hav ing $1 million worth of loot confiscated, including grenade launchers. " That's why everyone was focusing on small pieces," he said. Assault rifles and pistols could intensify violence among rival Palestini an groups but would not pose a direct threat to Israel, which has sealed Gaza with a complex of barriers. But Israeli lawmaker Yuval Steinitz of the ruling Likud Party said he is worried rockets could reach Gaza. Dur ing fighting, Palestinians have fired hundreds of homemade rockets at Is raeli border towns. "When people cross from side to side, terrorists cross, and weapons pass, too," Steinitz told Channel 10 TV. Meanwhile, friction between Abbas and Palestinian factions increased. A rally Wednesday to celebrate Israel's pullout ended in chaos when an ac tivist grabbed a microphone from a rap singer; No one was hurt, but the crowd of about 2,50 0 dispersed quickly. The rally had been billed as a show of Palestinian unity, but most factio ns and militant groups stayed away and Abbas canceled his appearance. Abbas' top aide, Rafiq Husseini, outlined what he said was a new security plan. by the (January) election, the Palestinian street w ill be cleaned of militias and illegal weapons," he said. Abbas would insist that all groups participating in the election disarm after the vote. "We will not allow for even one gun to be taken away from us," he said. "Why should we give up our weap ons while Israel still threatens our borders?" Palestinian militants from Islamic Jihad bring down the gate between the Rafah Refugee Camp, in the southern Gaza Strip and the Egyptian bord er, to allow people to cross ,Wednesday Sept. Palestinian secu rity forces were to seal the Gaza-Egypt border by 6 pm (1500 gmt) Wedn esday, and arrest all trespassers after the deadline. The once heavily g uarded border has been wide open since the Israelis left, with thousands of people crossing in both directions.
