View Replies To: cake_crumb I didn't know CA EMS made so much money they could afford to pay for posh hotels in the French Quarter of NO for two extra days just to have a hu rricane party. I recall from the other story that he was a union official.
View Replies To: sandbar I challenge you on that statement Sir! When did I say it (whatever "it" i s, because I do not recall discussing bussing out of there, you are putt ing words in my mouth) couldn't be done?
I was referring to calling Wal*Mart and asking for supplie s, of course, while the people in this article called a bus company and ordered ten buses. Much more dramatic than calling Wal*Mart, don't you t hink? So while you did not comment specifically on hiring buses, you did reply with consistent ridicule to my assertions that people have options, and you reserved particular scorn for any suggestion involving communication out of the city, on your supposition that phone contact was impossible. What makes this case even more interesting is that I didn't even have t he nerve to propose an idea as audacious as the one these people actuall y carried out: just imagine your scorn if I said, "They can pool their m oney, get on the phone and charter ten buses"! I would accept the d ebit card offered to me for my kids.
While we're on the subject of "destitution", however, let me point out that "destitution" m eans more than being strapped for cash: it means being without options. The above illustrates just one option that people made for themselves--t here are as many possibilities as people to dream them up. Your overall replies on this topic have been of consistent defeatism.
View Replies To: Shalom Israel Except this person also says the "c rations" were confiscated at the airp ort because they set off the metal detectors. And besides, they don't confiscate all metal items at airports. There is just something weird about the c ration references, and I also f ind it unlikely that a NG truck was careening around corners so fast tha t several pallets of rations would have been flung off.

View Replies To: 57chevypreterist "They told us that there would be no Superdomes in their city,'' the coup le wrote. So why would police officers from Gretna mistake this group of affluent w hite tourists for poor black NO natives who were itching to turn Gretna into the Superdome?
View Replies To: Shalom Israel Once again, you show your obvious lack of common sense and an arrogance t hat I assure you will one day bite you in the proverbial hiney. Good for them that they had access to that kind o f money. Unfortunately, most people living week to week wouldn't have ac cess to that if THEIR HOUSE WAS UNDER WATER. Or if their bank was out of power, could not obtain it through the typical means. Please stop pinging me to continue a debate that I eventually grew tired of on another thread.
View Replies To: TheClintons-STILLAnti-American Taking this account at face value, it's certainly astonishing! If true, t he police have committed any number of local and federal felonies by thi s type of action. The people involved should at least get an attorney an d file a civil rights action in Federal Court. And, their attorney shoul d press for Federal Criminal violations as well.
View Replies To: 57chevypreterist One thing is obvious, NO PLAN will work in LA! There was no plan and if there was one, they (the local authorities)would screw it up.
Good for them that they had access to that kind o f money. The vast majority of NO residents ha ve shoes costing something in that ballpark. But please read carefully: not everyone had the money, and others in the group made up the differen ce. Some of the people had no money, and no way to get money, and others made up the difference. Apparently not having money is not the unsolvab le problem you claim. And that's the real problem here: you keep responding to each possible ac tioon by saying, "Some people can't do that." The question is, how many people are incap able of taking ANY course of action? For any one person, lots of things won't work--but some things will. For any suggestion, lots of people can 't follow it--but many can. The set of people who have no choices at all is far, far smaller than you seem to think.
