hybrid attack Just as I was complaining about there not being any hybrids that Id buy, here Ive stumbled upon one by accident. Its called The Attack and its a hybrid supercar with over 300 hp developed from a AC electric mot or powering the front wheels and a 19L VW TDi biodiesel powering the re ars. The batteries powering the electric motor act as capacitors able to discharge a lot of energy in short bursts, enough for 0-60 runs in the sub 4-second range. Under normal driving conditions the car is powered b y the biodiesel engine and achieves 50mpg. And the best part is, this super-hybrid didnt come from the Big 3 or som e obscure Euro supercar maker, The Attack is the work of the West Phil adelphia High School Electric Vehicle Team - a group of 6 high school, Y ES, high school kids. Mad props to these kids for giving a new meaning t o pimpin my ride.
I'd heard about it b efore, but I'd not heard about anyone trying to adapt it for hybrid purp oses, which is a pretty neat idea. I'm not much into kit cars, but I've always thought the Attack was awesome.
Talk about a hot-rod 3 Posted Aug 15, 2005, 9:50 AM ET by Curious Did you come accross any of the details about what kind of motors, drives , controls, and basically how they did this. It looks like a great proje ct but I couldn't find any details on the linked website. If these were on the market, I would buy one right away. The 80 MPG family car that the Clinton Administration gave millios of taxpayer dollars to the Big 3 to develop - "couldn't be done" right? Wow, that Toyota Prius in m y garage must be a dream, huh? The big 3 said it was impossible, where T oyota did a 50 mile per gallon car instead of saying 80 mpg was impossib le. C'mon Detroit, are you b rainiacs going to be bested by some high school kids? A bunc h of kids build, what could be a considered a fairly high performance hy brid vehicle and all we get from major auto makers are overpriced, half- assed attempts at decent fuel economy. The people that can't afford the high gas prices are the same one's that can't afford the high hybrid prices. They same guy that can afford the $ 30K hybrid Accord is the same guy who ends up buying a $40K SUV because he can afford the gas. Is asking for a 180hp - 200hp hybrid that gets around 30mpg and has decen t torque at a decent $20K price too much to ask for? Glad to se e that they are making a hybrid that is appealling to enthusiast as well as being environmentally concious.
Posted Aug 15, 2005, 10:51 AM ET by Kevin Just because some high schoolers can put together this kit car with new p owertrain doesn't mean it's a valid business case for automakers. There are a lot of durability and manufacturing concerns when making mass-prod uced vehicles. Anyone in the auto industry can build a one-off hybrid supercar for a car show, but bringing a car to production is a whole different ball of wax .
Posted Aug 15, 2005, 11:42 AM ET by jef this reminds me of that story about bunch of mexican immigrant kids in ar izona that built a under water sub for a competition, and beat out colle ge kids from MIT and such to win the best of show award..

Posted Aug 15, 2005, 12:42 PM ET by bob bigglesworth i agree with Kevin from point#11. It is a great accomplishment especiall y since there are worse things they could be spending their time on. BUT The K1 Attack is getting great acceleration and great fuel economy becaus e its lightweight as hell. you need to realize that a lightweight and therefore most likely feable c ar is not going to pass the safety requirements that major auto manufact urers have. Look its great and i actually think the attack looks awesome.
Posted Aug 15, 2005, 2:18 PM ET by Ken to #6: the big companies dont want you to buy these cars. but soon they w ill have to, or get pushed under like GMC is right now. im no engineer so i can't say f or certain the long lasting characteristics of such a design. of course, i understand this is a test vehicle and was only made for one purpose - to be fast and efficient for testing purposes. lets hope this marks an improved interest in the field and makes its way onto the market by the mainstream (or indie) manufacturing companies.
Posted Aug 15, 2005, 3:58 PM ET by Sevnn The holes in the hood are showing off the inboard mounted front shocks. After import fees, shipping, etc you'll be looking about $25K US.
Posted Aug 15, 2005, 4:05 PM ET by bob bigglesworth I agree that this technology is the way of the future. Why not use the "f ree" energy that can be stored through electricity to run an electric mo tor to assist in propulsion and decrease fuel consumption. The only thing really stopping this from happening is the big oil compani es. If it weren't for them buying out patents for alternate fuel consumption vehicle technologies, i thin k we would have come up with this great version of the Attack a lot soon er.
