com, a little documentary tha t showed up in my mailbox, especially intriguing. It's about the strange fruit of a get-rich-quick scam in the debt-ravaged American heartland i n Utah, which is third in the nation for bankruptcy. Once upon a time, a con man, Clyde Hood, went to p rison. But like many victims, his ripped-off and faithful refused to bel ieve the wealth he promised wasn't still somewhere out there, winging it s way to them. Any day now, the forces of darkness would stop holding back the checks. Any day now, Jesus Himself would return in a spaceship, bringing news tha t President Clinton had signed a secret law in 2000 abolishing the Inter nal Revenue Service, with the heavenly acronym NESARA. This law (which s upposedly stands for the National Economic Stabilization and Recovery Ac t) would expose the "Republican Party" for what they are: literally rept ile space aliens posing as fiscal conservatives. "Some people have asked, 'Why does Jesus need a spaceship'?" a grandmothe rly lady in the movie tells us, then considers: "It might be more comfor table" But I'm getting ahead of myself. Type in "NESARA," which turns up an amazing 52,000 hits as of thi s writing.
this picture of one of the rallies these people throw in Washington, DC, demanding that the government reveal t he existence of Clinton's secret law. Sometimes someone drives by and gi ves them a thumbs up, which they interpret as a wink from government off icials in the know. A typical one of many NESARA Web sites - headlined "The Public Announceme nt of NESARA in the United States is Imminent!" He claims to have been told by God that the secret law was passed "in a secret joint session of Congress w ith the walls of the House Chambers lined with Navy Seals and Delta Forc e" The focus of "Waiting," the documentary by Salt Lake City filmmakers Zeb and Elisa Haradon, isn't the scam victims but those who've bought into t he beliefs that came with victimhood, which have now spread across the N et. The film focuses on the Open Mind Forum, a group of ex-Mormons convi nced that the US government will be forced to announce NESARA any day now. They breathlessly await the latest news on NESARA, updated weekly on the answering machine of "The Dove Of Oneness," an Oly mpia, WA woman pilloried in the local News Tribune as a liar and "cyberc ult queen." She claims to have secret, high-level sources in the government - "White Knights," supernatural avatars who will step in any day now to reveal th e law and bring about a New World Order. They are supposedly heard in th e Dove's voice mail updates, delivering messages about September 11 in s omeone's best Martian voice: "HUMANS HAVE TO GET OVER THEIR ANGER. WE WE RE THERE INSTANTLY TO BEAM THEM UP OUT OF THAT BUILDING. " The film is about the testing of faith in a time of dread, during the run -up to the Iraq War. First the "White Knights" renege on their promise t o stop the hostilities by beaming up all of our tanks. Then Jim, the sur vivalist who runs the group, gets made fun of on talk radio: "Who are th ese White Knights, the Knights of Columbus?" Even worse, someon e points out that if the aliens make us all rich, it'll just lead to inf lation. "We have to go with the flow," Jim tells the group in explanation.
