7/25 Krugman says new Toyota plant dumping US for Canada becuase US workers quality sucks and US doesn't have universal medical coverage which means Toyota has to pay through its nose for that. http://www.nytimes.com/2005/07/25/opinion/25krugman.html?hp \_ Old news. I think this was on the motd 2 months ago. \_ which part is old news? Krugman saying the Canadian health care system pays much less in administrative overhead per person than the U.S. does while providing universal health coverage, or Toyota selecting Ontario to build its new factory? \_ Toyota selecting Ontario for its new factory b/c US worker quality sucks. The original Toytoa statement re the choice of Ontario did not say that the reason was realted to universal medical coverage. \_ nono ... cost savings provided by government-financed universal medical coverage at a signifcantly more efficient level \_ Why do so many Canadians come to the US for health care? |

www.nytimes.com/2005/07/25/opinion/25krugman.html?hp By PAUL KRUGMAN (NYT) Op-Ed 757 words Late Edition - Final , Section A , Page 19 , Column 1 ABSTRACT - Paul Krugman Op-Ed column explains Toyota's decision to build new plant in Canada rather than in United States, despite American incentives; says Toyota pointed to quality of Ontario's work force, and in fact Japanese auto companies opening plants in Southern US have been unfavorably surprised by work force's poor level of training; says Canada's other selling point is its national health insurance system, which saves auto manufacturers large sums in benefit payments compared with their costs in US Please Note: Archive articles do not include photos, charts or graphics. |
